Some things just stick in my mind.

"Without pleasure man would live like a fool and soon die." - Pierre de Beaumarchais
From Bucko’s blog(Thanks Ken).  http://buckoclown.blogspot.com/
That has been running around in my head.
There are several blogs that use famous and infamous quotes.  Some use quotes that I have never read, and then there are some who are wise enough to come up with a statement that is so good, it will be quoted. I have a file called Logthegoodstuff. When I read something that strikes me I copy and paste it.  Such as:
… quote:
The problems we face today are there
because the people who work for a living
are outnumbered by those who vote for a
living.
(I pasted that one and did not see any name it was attributed to, but I like it.)
I guess that is why I like the  book of Proverbs in the Bible. The Proverbs are not only considered scripture, but are good logic and wisdom even for someone who does not accept it as the Word of God.
Someone told my mama that the Proverbs said, “Every pot must sit on its own bottom”. LOL. Well basically it is there, but not in those words.
From Ma’s blog sometime in the past (partial list)
(Thanks in advance MA!).
EASY AND HARD
Letting go is easy……….. Hanging on is hard.
Pride is easy……………… Humility is hard.
Excusing oneself is easy…….. Excusing others is hard.
Borrowing is easy…… Paying back is hard.
Sex is easy….. Love is hard.
Naughty is easy……….. Nice is hard.
Going along is easy……… Walking alone is hard.
War is easy………………….. Peace is hard.
Sarcasm is easy……………. Sincerity is hard.
Growing weeds is easy…. Growing flowers is hard.
Can’t do is easy…………….. Can do is hard.
Feasting is easy………………. Fasting is hard.
Following is easy…………… Leading is hard.
Having friend is easy……. Being a friend is hard.
Dying is easy……….. Living is hard.
Mile by mile, life's a trial.
Yard by yard, life is hard.
But inch by inch, life's a cinch!
Everyone of us hit a low spot at times, and need a Word to get us out. There are times I may want the Bible, and other time just want an honest person’s support. Sherry is ALWAYS my support, but I do miss a man’s support at times, and she misses her sister’s support.
Fortunately down here in the winter we have Don & Evelyn.
For years Sonny was my ‘man’s shoulder’ to cry on, or sounding board.  You don’t get over that when it is gone. I had others, Jim, Dick, Dad & Howard. Reconnecting with Buddy and having Tuck, who are there, but not HERE
Sonny was always HERE, LOL! Sonny would say things like I listed above from MA’s blog. Short and to the point.
I didn’t mean to go on so long, but I wanted to ask, what is your favorite saying, proverb or thought that get’s you over the HUMP!??
Thanks for coming this way.

Musical instruments

Being from North Carolina, with roots in Georgia (and I don’t know where else), I have been associated with many musical instruments. Being a preachers son from a fundamental back ground we had music in our churches. Most had bands as I have mentioned.

special%20s-10

I have seen all kinds of guitars, the one I loved to hear, I called the Hawaiian Guitar. I have known mountaineers with homemade fiddles and banjos. Once I saw a Uke or mandolin, made from a cigar box. I have seen and played the spoons. One band had a wash tub bass fiddle. Also I was amazed at the sounds coming from a ‘rub board’.

FirstBassTObrien2

In Jamaica I saw steel drums made from 55 gal oil drums.  They were hammered into different shapes for the different sounds. Fiddles were very interesting to me. Also the harmonica, As a kid, I was amazed at the men who played the guitar and had a holder for the harmonica (mouth harp) and played them both at once. Mountaineers can make some neat flutes.

JewsHarpCivilWar

(Above is an antique Jew’s harp)

The one I always called the Juice Harp is really a Jew’s Harp. (my hearing has always been bad, LOL). The first time I tried to play one of those I thought I had knocked my front teeth out. I learned better real quick.

(This is the modern Jew’s or Juice Harp)

Jew%27s_harp

But do you know of the dulcimer?  I am sure I had seen one, but I kept hearing folks say, “You should hear the hammered dulcimer!”

800px-Hammered_dulcimer

Well in my mind I could see a metal dulcimer that had been hammered into shape by a musical artist; that was a fallacy on my part. I learned it was a hammered instrument because of how it was played (not made), It is played with little wooden mallets, like the xylophone. We once camped in the Shenandoah's  beside a man who made them by hand. He would sit in the evenings and play one. Music goes well with camping.

I only play the trumpet and radio!

I hope we are Back

Funny how we (I ) are addicted to the internet. A few days off and I feel discomboobelated.  My daddy used to say that so it must be a word. HA!  May be a north Georgia word.

Anyway while we have been off, My friend Vondale and his wife Rose dropped by for a few days. Rose’s sister, Bernice  and her husband Bob, drove down also for a day. Also here in the park is our dear friends Evelyn and Don.  The joy of the girls was that they graduated the same year, Sherry carries all 4 yrs of yearbooks for their HS so they had a lot to talk about over “THE BOOKS’.

Don, Vondale and I hung out together. Tucker was having problems with his lap top and didn’t know how to take it apart.  He asked me if I did, I said no but I can find out. We left the girls at the unit Vondale had rented and came to our motor home. I found a site that told how to tear it apart. so as I played and stopped the instructions, they took it apart. Vondale fixed the part with Sherry’s last paper clip (I told him he was in trouble). They reversed the procedure and the thing actually worked. (It is amazing the amount of information is available on the internet free.)

We all ate out too much. We all joked a lot. I laughed when everybody else did.  When I learn to hear these things will be a lot more fun.LOL.

I was able to tell Vondale  that I had changed my mind about the trip down the intercostal waterway. I had been thinking about the wind and my hearing aids, plus my buddy speaks low.  Not to mention the price of Gas and his boat uses a gallon a mile!  He has a small Yacht about the size of our motor home. Yeah, I have a rich friend,(LOL), but we would not go without paying our share.

That is about it, I made my last visit to the dentist until next year.  We have spent enough this year anyway.  So we have decided to depart Florida in the next few days and head for the Charleston, SC area.

Thanks for coming this way.

Things may get back to normal here.

Tomorrow the router is due in. I think I am getting used to not being on line so much, this could have been a good thing,  I like to think so.  I hate being pessimistic.  I was born positive!  LOL

So I am planning on this being a great addition to our little home on the road.  We may be able to watch the video’s folks pass around.

Hey, I learned something to day. Something that probably everyone reading this knew but me. To preface that, growing up I never heard of broccoli, asparagus, pizza, or those little miniature cabbage heads.  So tonight Evelyn invited us over for corned beef and mashed potatoes with cheese biscuits; along with tomatoes and okra together.

Okay I have never eaten corned beef (except on a RubĂ©n & Sherry had to remind me of that).  It was good. Also, I have eaten tomatoes and okra together all my life, but today I learned something  else, Don put sugar on his okra and tomatoes. I tried it, it was good also.

So when I got home I asked Sherry where the meat came from for the corned beef. She didn’t know. so I looked it up.  It comes from the Brisket on the beef.  Also the Corn is not the vegetable it is the salt used to cure the brisket.

I just finished a cheese biscuit with the last piece of corned beef. Evelyn’s cheese biscuits are as good as Red Lobster’s.

Thanks for coming this way, I do appreciate it.  Oh yeah, I have been reading blogs and enjoying them. I am hoping that Lucy  and Grover are okay.

Now I will see if I can get this on. I wrote it off line.

A rare occasion

It is not normal for us to have folks living close that we know, especially in the winter. This winter we have been close to Don & Evelyn, we are parked beside them now. As I type I can see their motor home.

A couple days ago our good friends the Tuckers came down and rented a unit in the park for a couple days. We were  together a lot with a lot of chatter going on. All three girls, Evelyn, Rose and Sherry were in the same graduating class back in 1956.  They always get the Class Annuals out and discuss the fates of other class mates or their families.  All three girls are life long residents of Belmont.

Anyway we have been busy for a day or so while the Tuckers are down for a rare visit.

I have very few life long friends, but what I do have, I treasure. Being deaf hurts a lot, but still you want to be around friends.

I will return after this brief encounter from the past.

Thanks for coming by the Blog.  Remember our friends Lucy & Grover (Jeans hubby), the most recent ‘casualties of the war on age’ here on the net.

Uncles and Aunts

My daddy had 8 brothers and 3 sisters. I Can know the girls names. Growing up my kin folk had first names of Aunt and Uncle. On Dad’s side there was Aunts: Ruby, Bert and Annie Mae. I remember Aunt Ruby being sweet and kind, Aunt Bert (Bertha) and Aunt Ann were kind, and real cut-ups. They could play and joke just like kids.

On mama’s side there was Aunts Julia (Julee) and Aunt Demmie. Aunt Demmie was always old and an authoritarian, she was our baby sitter once while our parents went somewhere to a church convention. Aunt Julee was sweet and a cut up, bless her heart, she had 4 boys, my cousins, I guess they kept her young. hahaha!

The uncles on Dad’s side were hard for me to remember. Most of the men would have been listed with some ‘craziness’, or cut ups. Some of Dad’s brothers were young enough to play and work with my brothers, since Dad was the elder of the family. Dad was Frank the next brother was Jessie. I mentioned once they were named after the James’ brothers. At the time of their births (1903-1905), Jessie and Frank James were Heroes to the working man.

Then I am not sure of the ages but there was Parker, Hershel, Hisure, Fred, Ralph, Roy and (who am I missing?). I was closer to Ralph because he lived with us a lot, and Fred because he was the youngest, If I had a favorite it was Hisure. He was a truck driver by trade and a close friend of you older brother Odis. Odis was the fighter and Hisure was a wonderful easy going man.

Ahhh, papa Hisure, as my grandsons called him. He was their baby sitter when they were babies until school, for one and until his death for the last one. He was also their teacher in life things. Clean up after yourself, put equipment and tools away in the proper places, etc.  both boys remember him with much love.

I was so touched by little Luke at the grave side. He was the cutest thing, looking up at me he said, “Does this mean I play with Aggie now?”  Aunt Agnes was Hisure’s wife. Luke was so sincere and broken hearted at knowing he was not going to have Papa Hisure any longer.

I wonder sometime, what happened to the first names of Uncle and Aunt, they are seldom used anymore around us.

I guess most folk have the favorite Uncle and Aunt. Thanks for coming this way.

Do shoes Eat socks anymore?

One problem I had growing up, was in the winter when we wore shoes and socks, many times my sock disappeared into my shoe, leaving my heel exposed.  We called that, ‘A shoe eating a sock!’

I just wondered if that happened today? I think it was because there was no elastic in the top of the sock to hold it up.  Or maybe my shoes were a size or two too big. But that was one of the problems I had with shoes.

I was thinking of early problems. You know we all went to school with colds. I don’t remember have a handkerchief, but I might have. I know I did wipe my nose on my sleeve, boys did that, I don’t think girls were allowed to! What were those coats made out of? Wool? What ever it was it was not soft.  I am sure we spread the germs around pretty well up until the 1950’s.  The Polio epidemic put the quietus on germs where possible.

imgiron_03lg

If you saw a picture or a movie of an Iron Lung, it made even the toughest kid just a little afraid. So really my shoes eating my socks was very small in comparison to what could have happened.

My child hood memories are of World War II and just after that was the Polio epidemic. Thank God nothing to compare to either, has happened since.

I am not the oldest nor the youngest here on the net. What do you remember as the biggies, of your youth?

Thanks for coming this way.

Church… David and Rusty

Sunday morning we were sitting at McDonalds sharing our biscuit and having coffee. Sherry got a phone call saying ‘David and Rusty’ were gonna be at the First Church of God North of Eustis.

David is a very good ventriloquist and Rusty is his side kick (dummy). We always enjoy them so we took off and got there in time for church. Sherry had time to talk to David before church and found our he will be up in the NC area this summer.

david_rusty_new-310x351

I have done some ventriloquist acts in entertaining, but never an entire program. I had a monkey called ‘George’.  I was never the professional David is.  He is also a class ‘A’ singer and he and Rusty sing together. they are always a hit. Sunday was no different.

Scanoldphoto3 013

(Taken at a Hook a Book program in Key West, years ago when I had hair!)

It is probably my age, but I think kids are missing some very good down to earth clean entertainment, such as David and Rusty.

Now I must admit, we had never attended this church before, but seeing some things brought back some childhood memories. One was each ‘bench’ (Pew) had Hymnals Also in the rack were stick fans? Do you have any idea what I mean? We had them as a child, because there was no A/C in the churches and ladies would use them to stay a little cool. For some reason, they were all distributed by Funeral Homes, with their advertisements on the fan.

elvis-presley

This was a fundamental church that along with the black churches produced some great singers: Jerry Lee Lewis, Mickey Gilley, Whitney Houston and of course the greatest in rock and Roll Elvis. Dad’s churches were known for their singing, in the summer there was always a crowd outside looking in the windows and watching as the choir or ‘Special singers’ would sing.

ELVIS TUPELO 004

(Sherry and ‘E’ in Tupelo, MS)ELVIS TUPELO 026

(The church was so big in Elvis’s life they moved the little Assembly of God church to the house where Elvis lived)

I know this for a fact, because as often as I could, I sneaked out of church, yeah, the real preacher’s son.  And yeah, I did get a couple tannings for the acts of rebellion.  All of the churches Dad pastored, had a band, I was a trumpet player, Shirl was: piano, accordion or French Horn.. (Always a multi-tasker)

In Valdese some of my friends had a trio. Jim and Bub Page along with Paul Settlemyre. They honestly sounded like the Everly Brothers, they were good, no, to be honest they were great, even as a kid, I loved to hear them sing.

Oh, I cannot close without mentioning Garland Page, Jim & Bub’s dad. I loved to hear him pick and sing, such a mellow voice, and such a wonderful man.

Yes, churches have launched many singing careers; and many, that were very good, were happy to entertain locally.

More folks out walking

If it was not for dogs, some folk would never walk and exercise their legs. Walking is very important, like the other blessings in your life, you really do not appreciate it until some thing physical PREVENTS you from doing something you have taken for granted.  Everyone can associate with that if they have lived 40 years.  although temporary, something will hinder you from an activity you have always taken for granted.

Most everyone who knows us, knows Sherry developed a dream to walk the  Appalachian Trail. Being in pretty good health, we read up some, walked a lot more than usual, and started. the first year we could only hike 100 miles. We found out that if your heels hurt, you ain’t gonna make it about 2200 miles.

So back to the drawing board for better shoe wear etc. for all I went thru hundreds of dollars for boots, I found that tennis shoes with ‘super feet’ inserts was my best bet. I had to cut a slice in the toe to allow the shoe to breath and cool my feet.  also it keeps the toe nail on your toes.(LOL)  Sherry lost most of her toe nails until I cut the ends of her shoes also.

We are trying to walk at least a 2-4 miles a day now. The reason I started this is my heel has bothered me for about two months, it is finally feeling much better. Sometime this summer we want to get back to the NE and try to finish the trail. We have decided that some of the trail Sherry will by my support as I hike.  Meeting me at trail crossings with some crackers, p-nut butter and a KISS!  Or something like that. hahahaha.

Anyway I think the spring has brought more walkers out even down here in Florida.  Walking is a good healthy exercise, and at our age we need all the help we can get. LOL

In the ‘100 mile wilderness’ approaching the Final mountain of the AT, there is very little communications and no place for supplies or any help. Some of you know Fred Alton. He is considering hiking the 100 mile wilderness with me. That would be a treat. We became friends in the late 1950’s when he was in the Coast Guard and I was in the USAF. We were separated by life. He became a missionary, and I ended up with the military.

We have reconnected and are enjoying it. This trip is dependent on his health. He is one tough cookie, but right now he is in the roughest battle of his life. It would be a pleasure to have his wisdom, and walking a 100 miles together should give us many hours around a camp fire to talk about what we have been doing. Plans are made and plans are changed.

Thanks for coming this way.

I cannot keep a car clean

I know I am supposed to. Everyone tells me that I should have a clean car. Don’t ask me why, but I JUST CANNOT KEEP UP. Now honestly, when we clean the car, Sherry usually does the inside, I do the outside.  After it is done, I say I am gonna keep it this way. BUT I DON’T!  Shucks, I don’t know why, I am not really lazy, I think I just forget.

gitmobile

(This is the only Gitmobile I could find on the net, we had a 50 chevy looked something like the it was covered with peace symbols by our boys)

I like a clean car, you feel better in a clean car. So why not keep one?  I guess it is not one of my priorities.  I was very well satisfied on GITMO.  We were on water hours most of the time. All our water was from a huge desalinization plant. De-salt is done with heat, so the water  delivered to your house is hot.  Our house had a hot water heater but I am sure it seldom came on. We never turned on the hot water faucet when taking a shower, it was always a good temp for a bath.

So washing a car was a no-no using base water.  The dedicated clean-car folk would take the drippings from window a/c’s, and wash their cars. We had two 1950 Chevy's (Gitmobiles) that got painted when they were real dirty. The boys liked that, they used rollers and house paint. ha!

So Sherry is sometimes ashamed of our car and then shames me into washing it. LOL.  In most RV parks you are not allowed to wash your car nor the motor home.  The Park at 3 Flags does allow you to wash at a price. $5 for car $10 for the motor home. We usually do that once a winter.  Now I do clean the windows every once in awhile. LOL

Anyway I cannot explain why, but most of the time our car ‘needs a bath’.  Shirl on the other hand always has a spotless vehicle, she is so silly that way!!!!  LOL

We try to buy a white vehicle, it doesn’t show dirt quite so bad. Oh every time we get a different vehicle, I promise to keep it clean, I mean it!!!  I do good for several weeks,  then?  Back in the hole….

Don’t get me wrong, I love to see a clean car, I admire you guys that can do that, but me, I am a failure in that department!

Thanks for coming by the log.

Affection and loyal

My Aunt Ann (Annie Mae) Harbinson was one of my favorite people.  A lot of fun, and seemed to have time for children when we visited.  That wasn’t real often, dad’s family wasn’t a ‘tight knit’ family. But Aunt Ann once done me the greatest favor a person can do for a boy, she gave me a puppy. A Black Cocker Spaniel, I named Ace.  We had had a family dog, Bingo,  but she got sick and had to be put away. BUT ACE was mine. The most understanding friend you are gonna ever see.
My good friend Jim page sent me some pictures that although the dogs do not look like Ace, there is still the same Dog-like love.  Even if you are not a dog lover they make sense. I like this first one:
dog6
And then there is comfort!
dog7
dog4
Ahhhh and such comfort!
dog3dog5

Dogs are about saving lives also. I remember a novel once whose hero was one of the dogs trained to locate victims buried in disasters:
dog8
Then there is just YOUR dog, he doesn’t have to be trained to do anything, Love comes natural, no training needed:
dog9adog9c
There are all missed when they are gone, even after 60 years, Ace is still remembered. You never met Brandy, unless you know Mel, from ‘Up North with Mel’.  She is missed by those Donners.
003
I didn’t mean for this to be so long, but I wanted to share these pictures with you.
dog9bdog9cdog9e
No matter the task, a dog wants to help!
dog9d
And when dogs have saved lives, they don’t really care if they are honored or not, that is the human side, I think the Dog was just happy doing something good, all he needs is a pat on the head or someone to rub his belly or behind his ears.
