Laughlin AFB, Del Rio, TEXAS

We arrived to a pleasant day. We left Medina Lake in the rain believe it or not. I usually get upset at the rain, but it was needed so much I had no problem getting ready for the move.

TO DEL RIO 004

Yesterday we drove down and did find some water in the lake. Glenda done some research and found the lake is a reservoir and is down 70-80’.

Hwy 90 Goes through Brackettville, just outside of town John Wayne and a Rancherxxxx built a replica of Old San Antonio and the Alamo to film the movie the Alamo. It is still there and many films have been made on the set. Sherry and I visited it our last time down. Very interesting.

TO DEL RIO 020

On the road thru Castroville and Hondo I loved seeing the Steel girder bridges I remember from my youth around home.

TO DEL RIO 008TO DEL RIO 011

The trip was great. Texas has this driver’s courtesy that I have not seen in any other state. When the  shoulder is wide enough, and you are overtaking a car on a two lane road, the drivers will move to the right onto the shoulder and allow you to pass. I try to follow the lead of customs, so I was doing that on highway 90 coming down. the cars passing would flash their blinkers in thanks. I think that is such a nice practice.

TO DEL RIO 013

All traffic away from the border must go thru this check station.

We noticed the closer we came to the border the entrances and fences at the ranches were higher and tighter. The first time we left the border years ago and started away from the border about 25-35 miles away from the border there was a car/truck/bus check station. Checking for illegals. I guess most illegals know this, but to the ones who don’t it will be a very unpleasant surprise.

The showers have lowered the temps. They were calling for 104 here in Del Rio but now our gauge shows 83, and very pleasant.

Thanks for stopping by the log.

PS:

We are at a site but no host has shown up yet. So we just sit and wait and I can make this entry.

Saw this baby yesterday when Sherry and I went to the local Pizzeria for pizza.

At Lake Medina near Pipe Creek, Texas.

Tomorrow we hit the road for Del Rio, Texas. It is a short 3 hour drive. I have an appointment with the dentist at 10am Monday morning, good thing too, I just lost two more fillings out of these old teeth. You just cannot trust those Navy Dentists, their work won’t last over 50-60 years. LOL

Sherry and I were sitting out under the awning, (you may have heard it is hot in Texas) when a little Doe walked up. I took an apple and threw her some of it.

Deer visit 002

So I then got some carrots:

Mama and her fawn came up, I threw some to her, she stayed a safe distance. It was neat watching the fawn get lunch. The doe must not have a big udder, it was not visible. Below, they are leaving.

Deer visit 019

I have mentioned Medina lake and the fact it is suffering from past droughts. It is down 50+ ft. Here is a view from down in the lake bed:

from Lake Medina

Showing the piers and floating docks that lay high and dry. Can you  imagine the frustration of folks who bought lake front property and now the shore is a half mile or more away?

Destination tomorrow is more West than South, so the temp will probably be about the same.

Concerning the changes in Blogger, I think I will let it settle the way it will. If it effects me, I will try to recover. Seems too much for an old man to grasp right now. (I may think different tomorrow!  Confused smile)

Thanks for visiting the Log.

PS:

We are leaving Medina lake near San Antonio Texas, in the morning and heading for Del Rio.

What about the blogger dash board?

Are we losing it? What replaces it? Someone said they were going to use Feedly then I believe someone (Maybe Chatty)  said Feedly  was crazy and was giving her fits.

This sorta reminds me when AOL dropped Journals.

Any good info? If we are losing the dashboard what are you planning to use?

If I am yelling the sky is falling, and it AIN’T,  tell me and I will relax.
Thanks,
jack

Bandera followed by The Little Red Barn

Our time around San Antonio is winding down. In my Novel S’Gar, Tuck & his girl friend foil an armored car robbery in Bandera. I like revisiting this town. It is known as the Cowboy Capital of the World. Not cowboy, like the singing cowboys, BUT the REAL top riders, doggers and ropers over the years.

SAN ANTONIO THURSDAY 019

We visited the Antique mall. Mark bought some things and I about bought an old rotary phone. We walked down past the Courthouse and a block behind we re-visited the small Museum there. I like it.

SAN ANTONIO THURSDAY 017

Inside the museum the boys enjoyed the history of the Local Cowboys.

SAN ANTONIO THURSDAY 014

Something unique was this Safe, This safe was broken into in Bandera and $7,000 was stolen, the thieves left a dollar bill as a joke. They used a torch and cut into the side of it.

SAN ANTONIO THURSDAY 012

Some cities identify themselves from the power poles in town. Valentine, NE has red valentines around. Hershey, PA has street lights made like Kisses. This is on the poles in Bandera:

SAN ANTONIO THURSDAY 011

There is more in Bandera, but yesterday before the boys flew out we had to see a couple more things.

We drove by this house:

SAN ANTONIO THURSDAY 029

Then to Mission Conception not to much further.

SAN ANTONIO THURSDAY 035SAN ANTONIO THURSDAY 041

Finally to the Little Red Barn, and a big T-Bone steak with all the trimmings. We were met at the door and asked to follow a waitress with four salads in her hand and on her arm. You would love the menu. I am so tired of going to a restaurant and getting 4 menus, many I cannot read because of the lighting or print, BUT THIS MENU:

SAN ANTONIO THURSDAY 045

I can read. Our ‘boys’ were happy with their choices.

SAN ANTONIO THURSDAY 047SAN ANTONIO THURSDAY 048SAN ANTONIO THURSDAY 052

Sherry and I have eaten at the Little Red Barn before. But then the girls wore six-shooters with their outfits.

The steaks were good, the family had fun, and we headed back to the Motor Home for the last time with the boys. Their flight was this morning.  It has been fun, BUT the place is SOOO QUIET!  Winking smile

Thanks for coming this way.

PS:

The motor home is  quieter, but the visit was good family time.  I do miss daughters in law though! I despise divorce and what it does to families.!

San Antonio, Alamo and River Walk

On our way to the Alamo we parked a Hotel parking deck. We walked thru to the River walk:

Looking out from the second floor:

Walking past some beautiful Cholas(?) Sherry mom’s favorites.

Then I got her picture.

And then I got a kiss. Sherry said “Now take the boys.” Mark said, “I ain’t kissing!” We all got a big laugh.

Note one of the many water falls behind them.

Above is a sample of the huge info boards of the history of the Alamo. They are on display out in the court yards. Below is the monument to the 32 men from Gonzales who died.

033

Inside the Alamo there are flags, state and country, of the volunteers who died. Each flag has the number of men from those states or countries. I took note of NC and SC both had 7 men to die. All were volunteers and were not ordered there by the US Government. This was a Texas/Mexico situation. The Texans wanted to be free of Mexican rule. As you can see in the Alamo, many men and women came from the states to assist the Texans.

No pictures are allowed taken inside. And they mean it. I have found very few on the net. Here are some I did find, the back wall is shown here.

:Inside Back wall of the Alamo

This is some of the flags indicating the men who died here. A pennant is attached with the # from that state/country.

Very old picture without all the artifacts and flags.

Old sketch of the Alamo

A layout of the Alamo itself. At the time there was no roof.

Well that about concludes Down town San Antonio as far as our short visit. There is more to see of course, so come on down.

PS:

Sight seeing is most important to me. I am thankful I do have my sight still, and can enjoy the beauties of nature. I cannot hear the creatures Sherry hears out here in the woods though.
