Here are some statistics for the Year 1910:

The average life expectancy for men was 47 years.

Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only.

Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!

The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour.

The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year.

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year, a dentist $2,500 per year, a veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year, and a mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births took place at HOME.

Ninety percent of all Doctors had NO COLLEGE EDUCATION!

Instead, they attended so-called medical schools, many of which were condemned in the press AND the government as 'substandard.'

Sugar cost four cents a pound.

Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.

Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

There was no such thing as under arm deodorant or tooth paste.

Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason.

The five leading causes of death were:

1. Pneumonia and influenza

2, Tuberculosis

3. Diarrhea

4. Heart disease

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet

There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

Two out of every 10 adults couldn't read or write and only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A.!

I received a comment that floored me. Joany said she was enjoying listening to the book. WHAT? She said she had a ‘app’ with her Kindle that allowed my book to be audio. So she was listening and enjoying it as she was driving. I haven’t checked into this and I didn’t even know it was available.

I really got into writing the book, so much so that Bonnie had hundreds more ‘comma splices’ to fix, than she should have. As more people read it, I hear, ‘I love Jerry’, ‘that Elsie is cool’, Vickie M is my kind of woman, etc. 

From where I sit right now, I can look back into our bedroom and see Sherry reading ‘Finally Love’, for the 2nd time. But I’m a gonna tell you that girl will be sleep reading in 15 minutes. TV used to put her to sleep. Now she enjoys reading herself to sleep. She says it is the best kind of sleep. She will wake up and continue. I cannot do that when I am out, that is it.

I know it  must be beauty sleep, because she wakes up more beautiful each day.  I had to laugh the other day, our neighbor from across the street came over and asked Sherry, “Do you sleep sitting up? Your hair always looks good!”

I smiled because you ladies on the net even ask if she has a beautician on the trail, when she is back packing. She always has had beautiful hair. It frames ‘THAT FACE’ perfectly. But as you know, she is my doll. Okay I got off on something that is not new. Nah, I am not sorry. She is, and always has been, my dream girl. I joke about having to find a way to lock the door in the nursing home, so I can have my way with her.

Shirl, Sherry and I are going to go to the same nursing home and liven up the place.

I love this motor home. We live very well in 320 sqft. I get a kiss every time I pass my girl, and that is a lot of times.

The largest home I ever built was a little over 3000 sqft. I liked the home, but not as much as this 320 sqft. Shirl lives in 2700sqft and jokes about how many steps it is to the kitchen, I tell her that is her problem. Her bedroom is larger than our motor home.  LOL.

WHAT? His Birth Certificate is NO GOOD?

Imma tell you , I DO NOT LIKE BIN LADEN.  Since 9/11 our government has set in place some feel good rules that they say will protect us much better.

Sherry and I have had passports for years, the boys traveled with us over seas so they never needed passports. Today we were supposed to remedy that situation. We have been waiting 6 weeks for this appointment.

Our life style has cause some complications in life. Jack Jr. was born in at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, Miss.  Mark was born in Kirksville, Missouri. I was born in Gastonia, NC and Sherry was born in Belmont, NC.  So if we need a birth certificate it is no simple task. Fortunately a couple years on a trip around the country we passed thru Kirksville, and on a whim we decided to get a copy of Mark’s Birth Certificate. Good move. Because Mark is the ‘can’t find a thing’ son. The I musta lost it son, if you now what I mean.

Jack Jr. is a I have it son. I called to be sure weeks ago that jack had his birth certificate. Sure dad, I have it and a copy.

So today Jack handed his ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE over to the lady. You know the pretty one, with the gold seal on it. The one that is nearly 55 years old and in basically mint condition. He handed it over only to hear the words, this is not good enough. I must have one with a raised seal on it.  WHAT? his mama is here, his daddy is here. I have the family Bible out in the car can’t that be proof enough?

NADA, no can do. I am thinking. 4 weeks from now we need the passport in hand, I cannot just run down to Biloxi, Mississippi and pick up a certified copy.

WHAT DANG GOOD IS AN ORIGINAL BIRTH CERTIFICATE?????? You protect it like a treasure, for what?

“Oh,” passport lady says, “You can go to this website, vitalchek.com,  and get one!” She didn’t say, $42 and a few days later!

Okay, so I have that off my chest. Why doesn’t the processor have the authority to say here is a statement by properly Identified Mama and Daddy along with a copy of a Bible entry verifying that this is a true Birth certificate.

I just wanted to gripe, thanks for listening.

Yeah, everything is on track now, but I was planning to go on vacation in the next day or two, now that is delayed, LOL.

(I know, you all think I am on vacation all the time. LOL)

It is strange, coincidence that is.

When leaving a grocery store, I am amazed at how often  that the guy parked beside me is also putting his/her groceries in their car. There must me 200 cars in the lot but this happens many times.

Anyway, the day of the GaribaldiFest more things happened than I would have thought:

Friends dropped by from Anderson, SC.

Friend Tuck & wife Rose were in town for a reunion.

Grandson Luke’s Prom night (which takes most of a day now.)

It was all a lot of fun, and seeing everyone was great, but by bed time this morning at 2, I was beat.

It is hard to think of it all working out well, but with Sherry and Shirl’s help it did. I promise myself I won’t put a load of responsibilities on others again. In trying to arrange some parts of the ‘show’, I had to find and talk to Reba (coordinator).  It is impossible for me to hear in noise, but somehow I  try. She was very patient, but I still had to return once and enlist son Jack, to go back with me and interpret.

Honestly, I have these ‘great ideas’ but I have got to STOP listening to those ‘voices in my head’.

I am still beat, I have to be careful about this old body.  ahhaha

Tomorrow we head for the PO to apply for passports for the sons. Hope that goes well.

GaribaldiFest a cool time..

Both in temperature and a great time all round. We were scheduled to enter the park at 9am. I packed the little FIT with everything we needed except the candy bowls and a set of books Shirl had prepared. We had time to go get breakfast and coffee. We were there on time and set up pretty quickly.  It was cool (Sherry said COLD) and a little windy. It would have been impossible with out Sherry and Shirl, were great. Sherry took care of the money and Shirl with the PR & mixing. Also had a short interview with the publisher of BELMONT LIFE!

Not quite 11am and the streets were deserted.

But it wasn’t long until the crowds picked up.

Dianne’s Funnel Cakes were beside us and they were good.

We did see some old friends, Grand kids, and one Great Grandkid (Stella and her cousin dropped by)

I had a very special visit, from Anderson, SC. A couple I know well were in town and wanted to pick up some books.  Steve and Linda Thompson. I performed the marriage ceremony for this couple  46 years ago, back when I thought I was a preacher. They both declare all the kids and grand kids are my fault!

And this sweetheart was dancing in front to the key board.

Yes we sold a few books, more than I expected. the twins sold some CD’s. the weather warmed up for the drawing and as I expected, the money went first. I gave one little girl a “Toby’s Tales”, who was disappointed that she did not win at the drawing, She turned and yelled I got a book and kissed it.  Some things just make you feel good.

Grandson Luke’s HS Prom was tonight. His dad was letting him drive the Hummer. He came down to the Fest, a little down. Sherry told me he had locked the only set of keys in the Hummer. I know he hated to tell me, because I was so ‘BUSY’.  Ha, Never too busy to help a kid this good. Sherry and Shirl held the fort whilst we went home and fortunately I was able to get him in quickly and he drove me back to the Fest.

We knew the Fest was not about selling books, but the exposure. many who past did not know there was a local writer. I was surprised at the number of books we sold, It is hard to say how many but we were less 30-40 books when packing. I had one large empty box.  Of course I gave some away, it is hard not to.
It was a fantastic day that ended with dinner with friends, then strawberry short cake at the Funderburk Farm, with Don and Evelyn. DELICIOUS!

We started off our day seeing a 1939 Lasalle coupe like the above except it was a hard top. I grabbed my camera and hid the Go button and it said ‘no storage avail’.  Jack had not replaced the memory card. So back home to get the card.

A practice set up

Many times in my life I have ‘Flown by the seat of my pants’. Or learned to improvise at the last minute.  This time I want to have things about right so I tried a set up here in the driveway.

We are going to do a $50 giveaway and a complete set of my books.

We will let the winner pick between the books and $50.  The the reminder becomes the second prize.

Wanna wager which the winner will pick?  Ha, the money of course, but I don’t mind, I would do the same, then turn around and buy the newest book.

Of course I don’t expect them to do that. It is all for fun and promotion of the Festival.

I read some where that flags sell, so I added 6-8 flags. LOL

Time for enjoying Life

I liked what Bonnie said yesterday about margins in our life. Wider margins around our tasks, allows time for variables. We do fill our days with projects. Projects, that at the time, seem MOST important. These things usually can slide a little.
Even as a retiree I notice I fill my days to the edge, most especially when we are at home base here in Belmont.
We think we cannot make time for anything, however, accidents and death will force a change in schedule. Sherry is my memory and mind. She just mentioned, it was one year ago today that she fell and broke her arm. Her schedule changed drastically.
We also had to take time yesterday, to attend a visitation, because a very good friend passed away.
One thing I have mentioned on this blog, but it is worth repeating. In 1955 my dad decided to make a Last Will and Testament. He made an appointment and went in to see an attorney. “I want to make a Will, in case I die,” he told the lawyer.
Dad said the attorney looked at him for a long minute, then said, “Reverend, let’s get one thing straight,  the statement is ‘when I die’ not ‘in case I die’,”
It is good to face facts. A friend was having a tough time with his heart. The doctor suggested he walk 30 minutes a day. “Doc, I don’t have time to walk.”
“Tell me friend, you either walk, loose some of the weight, or you will make time for death or a long hospital stay, do you have a preference?”
I think I will take the advice and add some margin to my day.

Life has a way of leveling the playing field when we all get older. We all have one thing in common with old scientists, doctors, lawyers, sea captains, astronauts, Nascar drivers or other famous sports stars. We are just OLD people. Fame and money cannot buy you one more hour of life when you are dying.
I had two wonderful sisters-in-law. One wealthy and one with much less. We visited them both in the same nursing home.
I never expect to be famous or well known outside my family, some childhood friends and some great folk I have met on the net. I know me, and I am happy with my life. I believe Shakespeare coined the phrase, ‘To thine own self be true’.
I enjoy life. I want everyone to be happy and know what it means to like a job, love a mate and if you choose, hold children and grand children.
I want everyone to experience at least one TRUE Friend.
While here, I really do want to smell the roses on the last few miles of this life.

I could paint it like a ‘48 Chevy one day and the Nash the next day. You can even scroll messages down the sides This one is wild..

Now between the Desota and the Toy, I MIGHT take the Toy!  LOL

We don’t seem to have time to visit

I was in the process of trying to decide the type of wiring I needed on the Fit, to have it ready to tow. I was on the computer researching how to get the wire inside the car from underneath, when I saw a car pull into the drive. My first thought was I don’t have time for visitors.

It was my former neighbor and Shirl’s present neighbor, Jim Arp. He came in and we sat. He said I know I am supposed to call ahead now, not just drop in. Sherry was getting chicken ready for me to pressure cook for her great Chicken A La King. Jim was fascinated by our pictures as they cycle thru, most folks are.  We talked. And I put the chicken on to pressure.

We passed the time, Jim has a book he wants to publish, and was asking about my publishing. He has published one book on Hank Williams.  Jim is one of the forgotten (rock & roll) heroes of the ‘50’s and 60’s. He was very famous in his time, but is now sort of a recluse. He is about my age, and has had a very colorful life.

He played with some to bigger Rock and Roll groups. he was lead singer of the Del Rays in Florida.

He was the male lead in a couple movies.

I mentioned to him that we spent some time where he toured, in NY. I told about dropping in accidently on BJ Thomas and Billie Joe Royal at at county fair and a girl asking Sherry, “Are there guys supposed to be somebody?”

Jim used to run with Billie Joe and has no use for him at all. He told a lot of personal stuff between the two.

His favorite was Eddie Arnold. Eddie was Jims guest on the Radio when Jim was DJ around here. It was a plus for him to be able to pull that big a string.

Anyway, we enjoyed Jim’s visit, and I began to wonder, why don’t we have time anymore? You would never take Jim for having been out of Belmont, but he is really a great guy, but as I said, ‘a reclusive person’, to have been so out going in his life..

I met Jim Thru his cousin Doug Bryant, one of the best men in business in this area. He worked as a manager and purchasing agent for Stanley Lumber, formerly Belmont Lumber. When I gave Doug a materials list for a house, I KNEW it would be on time and accurate at a good price. Good blood in that family.

Jim was a year behind me in school. He was known as ‘Little Lonely’.

Jim is in the ‘RockaBilly’ Hall of fame. I have a lot more to say about JIM, but it will be later.
