What is YOUR CAR?

It is no secret, I love cars, especially old cars. That is probably because I am OLD.  But I do love the designs of cars as they emerged up and thru the 50’s.

In my youth, turning 16, in North Carolina, was when you got your driver’s license. Boys and a lot of girls could not wait, the driver’s license was like a ticket to freedom. I turned 16 and my dad took me down to take the test. I aced the written test, and got a ‘permit’. Permit meaning I could drive with a licensed driver in the front seat with me. I had to wait a week for the ‘DRIVER’S TEST’. Passing the driver’s test meant full fledged ‘DRIVER’S LICENSE’.

The next week I was there. The patrolman in the passenger’s seat. First thing. Parallel park. Dad had shown me the trick and I slipped right in. But on the road test. I came to a stop sign (thought I had stopped!) He told me to back up. What does that sign say? I said Stop. He said, “that is right, you rolled thru it. Take me back to the station.”

FAILED! Tail between my legs, I drove home. But the next week, I PASSED EVERY THING!

Now there was some advantages to being a preacher’s son. I got to ferry folks to church who lived too far away to walk and did not have a way to get to church. Sunday morning I was in my element. I was a good driver and I loved ‘hauling folks to church’. It was driving.

I was the baby of the family, and at 16 Dad was now pastoring churches that paid a ‘full salary’. He said, it is time to get you a car, your mama and I can pay about $500 for one. Let’s go look. he did not exactly like what I picked, but he bought me a 1948 Chev. Convertible. It cost him $450.00. I loved my dad and mom, WOW!

Of course I would love to have a car like that now, but most of all I would love to have a 1955 Chev Convertible.

Next would be the 1953 MG Hill climber:

I have shown that a lot of times.

Now what car yanks your chain? If you could have a classic, to drive around on Sunday Afternoon, or go to a cruise-in, what would you like to drive?

I know it is a dream, but I have had a lot of dreams, some have come true. Old cars make me feel good.

Thanks for coming by the log.

Love that MG.

When I was at a Museum in Cape Cod recently.........all the antique cars were so beautiful. I thought of you. My daughter took photos. I'll send them to you under separate cover.

Hugs, Rose

If I had to drive a classic then I'd drive what I had as my very first car. A '56 Ford. I loved that car and drove it till it couldn't be fixed any more. Now I'm still driving a Ford. It's a 2003 Focus. I like it pretty well but doesn't compare at all. The rain has stopped here and the sun is out, still cool though. Hope you all are having a super Saturday!

Most of the cars I've driven have been means to an end and not an end in themselves. Never has a car I've driven been completely and truly MINE. They always belonged either to Daddy or my husband and were provided to me to get me about from place to place. The closest I've come to having one of my own is the used Chevy Lumina sedan I drive now. It is white and not the color I would have chosen, but I have gotten used to it. I don't know what I would choose if I could have a classic all my own. I do like to look. My son and I note the other cars on the highway and enjoy discussing which one fits my alter ego. :-)
You never know when the stodgy old lady driving a sedan has an alter ego inside who is scratching off in a sporty muscle car.

I like the Mercedes I currently drive. There will always be a special place in my heart for the old station wagons(various makes)my dad used to drive though. ~Mary

Too cute about failing the first time around, Jack! But I bet you didn't make that mistake again! Son couldn't wait to drive, in Montana could at 15 for his license, 14-1/2 for his permit.

hoping all is going good for you and Sherry!

My first car was a 1965 Ford Mustang. You've seen what I drive a 1994 Pontiac Sunbird that I bought used 13 years ago and hope to get that many or more years out of it. It's been a good one and will soon be a classic, lol.

Love ya!

What a FINE assortment of cars you've shown here, Jack!
Of course, ol' «Louis» is proud you showed the Packard and the Studebaker. His parents had a '53 Plymouth the same red you show here. It was a Cranbrook 4 door sedan. Like you, «Louis» likes that MG as well. A local mechanic (who also owns a very fine '32 Ford Model A) has an MG very similar to the one you show.

I loved my 59 Dodge two door hardtop white with black fins.
Dad would not let me have a convertable said no protection if
it turned over didn't want me to
have a hardtop. That just a good
DAD.

I wish I had kept the 57 Isetta.
and 64 Mustang. Remember you sent me a picture when you were at Hemmingway Motors standing in front of a red Isetta with the front door open. I love old cars.

Your first car was fantastic - but it probably wasn't at the time - right - now it would be wonderful!

Can't say I am a car person. As long as I have a half decent one that gets me from point A to B.

When I was younger - about 16 - my dad had a friend who worked on cars - they got a 1968 Ford Torino - red convertible with a white top - with white leather seats - and he had that man paint my name on both fenders Sandie K. Well at 16 when you want to be normal and blend I did nothing but not blend. lol I hated it, but I drove it.

Love all the old cars you show here. Thank goodness they didn't fail me because I couldn't paralell park and I still can't. Don't think I know how to spell it either. lol

Have never bought my own NEW car. Always have used ones. A Vintage Aston Martin or Volvo would float my boat.
