Christmas, what happened to the gifts?

What does this time of the year mean to you?  It is a time of happiness and good cheer. WHY?

Well for one, Christians have agreed for years that they would celebrate His birth on the 25th of December. That is fine with me, I don’t think anyone knows the exact date. But evidently the wise me brought gifts. I have no idea if that was a practice back then (giving gifts at birth or on birthdays).  But it has become a tradition for us to exchange, or GIVE gifts at this time of the year.

Have you ever thought of what Mary and Joseph did with the three BIG gifts?  I haven’t until now. So I will  tell you something you do not know.

First, did you hear about our Paula in the first grade drawing at her desk, and the teacher asked what she was drawing and she said, “I am drawing God.”

“Now Paula dear no one knows what God looks like.”

Continuing her drawing she answered, “They will in a minute.”

So in a minute, you will know about the gifts.

When Jesus was turning ten  he was talking to his mom one evening. The light of the candle was flickering against the wall, as they talked he was making shadow shapes of animals on the adobe walls of their house with his hands. He smelled the incense she was burning  and his mood turned  very serious, “Mother, I know you and dad have been saving those three gifts you said the Wise men brought when I was born. I know Uncle Barnabus kept them while we were away in Egypt. Now they have been here for years. I know you and dad can use the gold, you have debts, I over heard. So please pay the debts, I will never need gold.”

“But son, they are for you. You will be very important one day, I know, an Angel told me you were special, you may need it.”

“No mama I will never need it, that I know,” the boy said with no arrogance in his voice but with so much conviction, Mary knew He was right.

“Also the Frankincense and Myrrh. Aunt Sara can use  the Frankincense and the family down the street can use the Myrrh, the mother just died. They do not have the necessities to prepare her body for passage.”

“But,” said his mother, “These are for you son, the Angel said you were…..”

“None of this is necessary for my mission, it was a wonderful gesture by the wise men, and something they felt they must do. But that is past. My Heavenly Father has  rewarded their faithfulness.  I will not need any of their gifts to fulfill my mission here. Please mother, use the gifts for good, it is best.”

“Jesus, you are special, I have known it since the day I met an Angel. You are such a wise son to be so young. It will be as you said, we love you, now it is time to taper the light. Good night and sweet dreams.”

The next day there was a party, it was Jesus’s Birthday and his cousins were all gathering. None were as joyous or happy as the ones blessed by the re-gifting.

So now you know what happened to the gifts and where re-gifting really started.

Thanks for coming by the log.

And now you know my version to the rest of the story.

Hmmm - Jack good story. I am not too sure that it is the REAL story.

And I agree with you on his birthday I think I have heard it's in April - but who knows.

MERRY CHRISTMAS,

What a sweet story. It's always better to give than to receive. Merry Christmas from my house to yours!

Well what a good story but different
from I was told in Sunday School.
Did Dad tell you that story and said go and tell it to all the world, just wondering.

I have heard it said that the gifts could have been used to finance the trip to Egypt. I suppose that would have been a practical use for them.

I like this Christmas story.

I agree with anonymous in that I heard the gifts would have financed the trip to Eygpt. And I do agree that his birth was more than likely in the spring and not winter. Good thing is that He was born! I liked the story of re-gifting. I've been known to re-gift a couple of times myself :)
