Abraham Lincoln and other stuff

About yesterdays post. It is a fact that Nancy Hanks came thru Belmont, NC.  Facts are she proved to be an expert seamstress and was certainly able to earn a living. In KY there were stories of her earning a living sewing Wedding and Funeral garments and the trimmings and trappings of each.

We visited one of the early places (KY )where Nancy lived and worked. I was so surprised at the fact you could touch and handle all the artifacts. That year we had a great time having our Buddies, Sonny and Collette (Sherry’s sister) with us. We reached at least 5 homes and historical places of Abe’s life. Nice. Did you know he used an axe from the time he was 8 yrs old?  No wonder he was known as a rail splitter.

The hint that Abe was illegitimate is pretty far fetched, since His sister was born to the Lincolns after their marriage and he was born two years later, as I stated yesterday. I think it is just one of those wild conspiracy theories that local folk really like to believe.  Carl Sandburg even fanned the flames in his biography of Lincoln. Ignoring written history from the Sinking Spring Farm.

I liked Abe’s quote about his mama, “All I have been and all I am, I owe to my wonderful mother.”

WE all enjoyed the search into history.  If you search history either physically or in books, you gain an appreciation of what it took to establish this great country.

I appreciated Abraham Lincoln because he earned his right to lead with hard work and determination and good morals.

ALSO….I definitely appreciate the founding fathers of our country who were mostly very wealthy landowners and planters. Everyone of them could have sought favor with England and lived out their lives in peace and wealthy splendor.

They chose to form  a NEW ‘type’ of nation.

Remember the preamble  to the constitution, we used to have to memorize it:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.(Set in perfect cursive handwriting of that day)

They went on to set forth in the Constitution, how the government would be set up, ages  and tenures of representatives, etc.

Once that was done they came back and added amendments, that is what we here the most of today:

First amendment:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances

Second Amendment:

A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.

Third Amendment:

No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.

I appreciate all the info you are passing on. Our founding fathers are to be admired for sure. We have much to be proud of in our great country. Sacrifices were made so that we could have the freedoms we do. It would be great to be there where you are with so much history all around. History is one of my favorite subjects. I'm not an expert but never get tired of reading about it. A hot and sunny day here. I've been in most of the day but plan on getting out on the porch before the sun goes down. And that is getting earlier each day.

That was a great quote to share, Jack. I like the exhibit you got to go to that you could touch things; most of the time the things are behind glass cases and you can only look with your eyes.

Abe's mother was quite pretty! Curious isn't it ... I can't recall any photos or portraits from that era where the subjects were smiling. Not sure why that bothers me ....

Like Betty, I like the idea of being able to touch those treasures!

I've learned more here Jack, than I ever did in History class, but then I'm no longer daydreaming. Thanks so much for sharing your travels and your extensive knowledge. Love ya for it.
I think Abe's quote about his mother is true of a lot of us still today. "Thanks Mom," I've said it a million times and have meant it.
Now, that '50 Chevy truck, made the year of my birth, I love but would not drive around here. It's so low, it would kick up every rock on our roads and driveway.lol Raise it up a foot and it's mine... :)

Something you said - written in cursive - beautiful cursive - the kids aren't learning to write in cursive anymore - so they won't even be able to read the original constitution!!!!!!!
