The Road Not Taken

Open-Source-The-Road-Less-Traveled

ROBERT FROST, (One of my favorite people).

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,

And sorry I could not travel both

And be one traveler, long I stood

And looked down one as far as I could

To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,

And having perhaps the better claim,

Because it was grassy and wanted wear;

Though as for that the passing there

Had worn them really about the same,

road-less-traveled

And both that morning equally lay

In leaves no step had trodden black.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh

Somewhere ages and ages hence:

Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

Until the 7th Grade, I thought poems (poetry) was for sissies. Then came THE TEACHER (You know the one, the one who can inspire) Mrs. Melissa Grill. Oh she was quite the disciplinarian. Kept me in after class many times to clean the erasers, But she had a way of quoting poetry to make it SWEET and real.  The class was mountain kids, she taught hygiene and manners, along with the regular 7th grade material.

She emphasized the lines I have in color. i.e. And sorry I could not travel both. Decide and do one thing well she said.

Oh, I kept the first for another day!

Yet knowing how way leads on to way,

I doubted if I should ever come back.

You may tell yourself you can travel both roads, but recalling a moment in time is not possible.

She said choose well in life:

and I—

I took the one less traveled by,

And that has made all the difference.

The poet hints he is happy with his decision, it makes a good poem, but choose well, not everyone is happy on a road less traveled by.

I have learned she is right, not every old person is happy with their life and want to go back and FIX something. You can make some repairs, you really can, but you cannot change it.

That is so true, Jack, choose well even if it is the less traveled one. So true too about we can make some corrections, but we never get a "do over" in our lives, so we just need to wisely live each day the best we can.

I've always loved that poem!
The images you've chosen to accompany this post are perfect. For some reason, I got a lump in my throat just gazing at them and letting my mind wander.

... not a bad place to be on a lazy Sunday.

It's always hard to decide at a fork in the road. Love this poem and the pictures.

I love that poem and it spoke to me at a time I needed it most.

Another poem that resonated with me wash by Wadsworth.
One verse goes something like this:

Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime
And departing leave behind us
Footprints in the sands of time

It is great that you were inspired to love poetry. That is a favorite of mine too. The road less traveled reminds me that we all have choices and how important they are! Although we can't change the past, we can make the best of today !
