This is from 'Appalachian Life,' Baptism in the river.
(Not only Appalachian Life, I remember this many times during my lifetime.)
Today is a little reflection on life. Looking back, as my friend Bud said to me tonight, “By rights we used up our 9 lives in our youth.” Most teens drove too fast at one time or the other. We were distracted many times. Climbed too many sheer rock walls and jumped from too high, into the river or lake. So many more situations that one false move and it could have been your last.
In our family, a distant nephew (great great) had his life snuffed out in a single car accident on a country road. No alcohol, drugs involved, just rushing to get home on a tricky road. Probably did it many times before. He had his own business and was a young father and loving husband.
AND today we have the texting epidemic. When a message cannot wait minutes, must be done at 70-80 mph. I see it from the seat of the motor home EVERY time we are on the road. Men, women, boys and girls texting at speeds above the speed limit.
I cry at the emptiness of homes where lives, especially young lives, are taken away in seconds. Leaving children with no dad or mom, a wife or husband with no mate.
I cannot believe how good God, Life and Chance have been to me. By rights I would not have seen my 17th birthday. I was in a one car accident one night. The convertible rolled completely over on a country road. But I and my friend had no major injury and I am thankful.
Life is precious. Life is priceless.

PS: Friend Buddy sent me some good
advice (and some sarcasm)……
If you tell the truth, you don't have to remember as much.

That is so true. I think about how fast we both drove all the time. I guess
things were safer back then. When I get in my car to go somewhere I pray
to be safe. I also say "THANK YOU JESUS" for a safe ride.
So true Jack. Life is precious. Life is priceless. I went to bible study this morning and we pray for others and you should see the list - young and old - some die slow some die quick. I think we need to appreciate and enjoy every moment - and walk with God.
I am so sorry about your nephew. I worry every time Andy goes out and drives his car. Scares me to death.

God had better ideas for you, Jack.
Yes, this texting business has become an epidemic. Good term!
I rarely drive the freeways, but nearly every day I'll witness one or more rear-end collisions along my commute.
I'm so glad you made it so I could meet you and Sherry. John had his wild driving days too and has a scar to prove it.
i think we all have wild driving days put behind us as we age.
Yes life is precious and we so often take it for granted. Life is precious...I'll repeat that lil the cows come home...by the way do you know what's happened to our friend Betty? I haven't heard a word since the end of the year.
I have done some crazy things in my past and drove way to fast at times. I look back often and wonder how I made it this far. Since I have gotten older and wiser, I make better choices but that does not ad nor take away from our time here on Earth. When its our time, we will go.
Prayers for the precious family he left behind.

Like Paula said...so glad you made it so we could meet you two. Life on this earth IS a short one. I too had driven so fast ONE time that it scared the bejeebers outa me. I pulled over, shut the car off and thanked God then and there for stepping in and making me think of my kids. So sorry about your family loss. My hugs and prayers are with you all.
love n' hugs from up north where we are still ' chillin', freezin', getting by day by day.
