Hey, I met Slim, BUT then I met MOM!

These folks uphere brought sweets. Mel brought the homemade jelly/jam/preserves. Dar brought the cake (yeah we had to taste it!). Look at the neat container for the jars!

I met SLIM. Mel & Slim picked us up for breakfast at Jack's Corner Bar. It was delicious, I had eggs and pancakes. The Pancakes were delicious. Just like I like them and we had real maple syrup, jack's own. Then we went out to the Estate of Slim, Mel and Brandy. Brandy is getting old but a sweet loving Golden Retriever (I think). Such a sweet dog.

Slim took us out to his play house, their son Sam(I am) joined us. Sam is the trapper. This is where Slim dresses the animals, makes the sausage and prepares it for keeping, most of it it smoked I think. He has a smoker that will do 200lbs at a time.

I always get my picture taken with big folk, when I don't have my stool to stand on!! This is our Host Slim, he's tall and that ain't all. This guy knows about as much as Mel.

Mel welcoming us inside the Museum. Their house is a living friendly wildlife display museum. They built the house from trees cut on their property.

Whoa, inside one of the first things you see is Sam's Bear. This one weighed much over 500 lbs. I learned real quick, these are not taken for trophies, this meat is eaten. These families live off the land. They heat primarily the house and water with wood. Many hours of labor goes into the cutting hauling and splitting of the wood for the coming winter. Note the inside paneling. All from their property.

Now here is Slim with one of his Bucks. He was very proud of this one, and I don't blame him.

Slim let me wear his hunting and trapping hat, I felt like old Davy. There was my bear.

Never to be out done here is Mel with a trophy fish.

There were also skins, and trophy size Walleye and Pike.

And not to be out done again she got this one last year with a 30.06.

Awhile back while Slim was gone Moose hunting, Mel poured and stamped this patio. The water fall starts from an old hand pump. (If you have ben reading 'Up North with Mel' you seen this in the works). Slim was surprised when he got back. He told me one thing I have learned don't tell the girl she cannot do something, she will show you! I believe him.

Now the surprise fo the trip, We are going to see mom. The farm is huge, the home comfortable. But see that Big Buck, Mom got that one, there is one just as big on the other side of the split rock fireplace and mantel. (The Dad done that). (Word of advice don't mess with these women, they can shoot!)

As I said these animals are for food. The wild game is taken to support the family. Some folk raise cattle and some folk think nothing of eating a good steak, but frown on a family hunting their meat in the winter to sustain their families. All of our ancestors did just that.
Sherry was taking the pictures today, about 55, not enough room on here for them all.
This spinning wheel was made by Dad also.

But the pride of this family is in this shed. Before the patriarch of this family passed on he wanted to build a River Boat. One like he had hunted and fished in in his younger years. He took the family to the woods and pointed the trees he would need. The boys cut the trees and prepared them the way he instructed. You would have to see this beauty up close. the wood work is fantastic. the different woods used for a reason. The decking is fitted small pieces I don't remember the different woods. But they were small strips 1-1 1/2 " wide. fitted three of one kind of wood then one of another then three again. Put together with brass screws. I only remember the mid seat was of Birch and the front seat or back seat was walnut. The oar locks were lined with Moose or Deer leather to work as a sort of bearing. The boat was branded by Dad's brand that was a combination of letters that formed his brand.

The whole family is so proud of this boat, dad had been gone now about three years, his legacy, his memory and tales of his accomplishments will continue as long as this family lives.
Oh, but Now, I got to hug this fiesty lovely lady. She is beautiful inside and out. The mother of this crew. She is a doll. Inside the house I was looking at a family picture nine children I think. I smarted off, "So you started all this I see!"
Without missing beat, she indicated her husband, "NO, I think he did!"
Tipical woman, blame it on the man. Folks this is one lovely lady, it was such a pleasure to meet and get to know her. God was good to this family.

I think I had better close and see if this will load, I have already lost the whole thing once.

This continues to be a wonderful trip for us Gypsies. We are in a great park surrounded by wonderful people. And Jack's Corner Bar is within walking distance.

Well, Well, Well finally, Dar and Mel!!!!!

I don't know how long we have known Dar (Dar's Stuffings) & Mel over the net, but they have been a joy, except when Mel put chocolate recipes on her blog, 'Up North with Mel'. LOL So today this trip started out with a lot of anticipation, Today we hope to meet the illusive Dar and Mel!

This trip is short a couple hundred miles, but a beautiful drive. I snapped this picture for two reasons, I am starting to see more birch, and the lovely lake. We drove by so many lakes.
Here is another one.
I was so Glad Sherry go this one, It was touted as 'Da yoppers Tourist trap'. You may not see the reason, but there is a car made into a snow plow. THAT CAR IS A 1953 SKYLARK BUICK a classic, and it is a snow plow??? It is the red one you can only see the rear on the pic.

Another of the many lakes, why shoot it? because it was so pretty, all lakes along here are nice.

The roads were good and mostly lined with wild flowers. Some folks say a drive like this is boring. I never see enough wild flowers or trees. Of course in the desert I never see enough desert. I just love the drive.

To answer the question from 'Y', about shooting pictures while driving. I very seldom take my eyes off the road. I hold the camera up and balance it against my cheek and point it where I think the shot is and snap. I never look at the display or peep hole. Yeah, I delete a lot of them. hahahahaha! I got Sherry to shoot this church, it just struck a cord. I love the impression it made.

Both sides of the road lined with wild flowers and beautiful pines and cedars.

Sherry caught the Wisconsin sign as we crossed. I had just squeezed this bus thru some narrow city streets, right down main too.

One Wisconsin community had some beautifully kept old houses. Every one had just painted their house and cut their grass, it was neat.

Whoa, we are at Park Falls. Bill, Dar's husband, works here as a super in the paper mill. Bill is a great guy, he even has a Blue New Holland tractor with a loader.

We are in Hines City Park, Park Falls, WI. This is home for a few days. Quick call Dar and tell her we are here.

This is Mel and Sarah, we were about to bust our buttons with these great folks coming to welcome us to Park Falls. (Sarah is really smiling, she is getting married in a few days.)

And there is Dar, with her grand love Syrus! This was all such a joy to us. Syrus and I hit it off he and I like magic and entertained each other. Sy is 7.(Don't you just love that name, Sy!)

Bill didn't get to talk much, but he laughed a lot. It was all so much fun. This was such a joy and thrill for us to finally meet these wonderful folk.

Getting ready to say good night outside the coach, the whole crew minus my love, who was taking the picture.

I just want to say this is one of the things that makes this way of life of ours so rewarding. Our lives are made richer by these folk who talk a little different. Now I know we have an accent, southerners are known for murdering the English language. BUT New Englanders and now folks from upper Wisconsin excite what little hearing I have. I don't understand it all, but I could listen to the different inflections and accents for hours. It will be like Christmas tonight, it will be hard to go to sleep. Our day was GREAT!
WE had a wonderful trip, the roads were good with very little traffic. Oh, and we got gifts! Dar brought cake and Mel brought home made jelly and the neatest holder. Pictures later.
Dar, Sherry and Cy left Bill and I alone. I enjoyed the conversation so much. He is a man of the woods. They live off the meat from the forest. I enjoyed the tales, the old boy knows a lot of stuff!!!!.
Dar promised I could play on his tractor, but Bill didn't say so! hahahahaha!
I could go on for longer, but I will quit for tonight.

PS:
We have met some wonderful bloggers. Debbie (and Gary), Terri, Ora and Mixon. They made our days in Kentucky. Then we ran into the Blue Ridge Boomer (LInda May) up in the mountains, another joy. Of course we knew Fred & FRances in Tennessee, but it was great to renew their acquaintence. WE also met 'Y' (Yvette), who with her husband were displaced by Katrina. We see all their pictures pop up on our screen saver. Now we have more to pop up and more memories to savor. LIFE IS GOOD!

Marquette, Michigan and Gitchie Gumme!

Our Trip around the country, a Swan Song. So far we have traveled:
Motor coach....1484 miles road and day trips in the van.....688 miles total...2,174
So far it has been an amazing trip!

When we arrived in Marquette driving the motor home we saw this structure jutting way out into Lake Superior, WHAT IN THE WORLD IS THAT? Well we found out that they mine iron ore here and this is a ore loading dock, this one is no longer in use. Notice across the top front, there are four sets of little marks. That at one time was rail road tracks. There was a long trestle that allowed four trains up there at a time to drop the ore.

Well lets drive on West along the coast line a couple miles. We will pass this rock Island where someone has painted 1990, I don't know if that was the class of 1990 or not.

As we approach the ore dock we will go under the trestle that is allowing the trains on top.

Here you see the train cars.

There are 200 of these giant finger looking containers. 100 to a side. Each finger will hold 250 tons of ore pellets. A ship or barge is brought along side and they lower and pour the ore. You can see it would not take long to load a ship. This structure was built in 1912, almost a hundred years old and capable of loading 9.5 to 10 million tons a year.

Back in town we took a walk around town we always love to do this to get the feel of the town. Below is St. Peters Cathredral, It has beautiful twin domes and can be seen for miles.

This is Looking East on Front street. This is the street we came into town on. It is not very apparent but this is a HILL. It rises toward us. The red canopy on the left houses the restaurant where we plan to eat.

This is the Vierling REstaurant and Brewery. Shoot and I quit drinking beer.

Would you believe a soddy looking place like that is a classy restaurant.
We came here because they advertised fresh lake White fish. I am not crazy abot stuffed anything. It seems to take away from the taste of the main ingredient. But since this stuffing had frogs feet, sesame seeds, Blue crabs, chicken lips and toad gizzards, I thought I would try it. (As most know I cannot understand most speech that might as well have been what the waitess said.) The price was a reasonable $324.79 okay, that is an exaggeration. But a meal to me (being cheap) is $13.50 tops, but I prefer $3. I guess it wasn't bad, $17.95, stuffed white fish.
Sherry ordered Spinach and Artichoke dip (very good) and we had a salad. Absolutely the best dressing I have ever had, Raspberry vinegarette.
Something strange happened. I kept staring, see the guy in a red cap. He is looking out the window, he looks very much like my deceased BIL, Dick. I couldn't get over it.

After supper, we finished our walk down by the piers. A giant sign reads, "NO DIVING OR SWIMMING", there were about ten more swimmers on the pier. (so much for signs).

There were some folks getting instructions on sailing. Then she hits me with a statement out of left field, I have always wanted a sail boat!, She said, "Maybe we should have gotten a sail boat, it would have been fun, I would have been for it if you hadn't mentioned sailing around the world."
(Now she tells me that I blew the whole thing by mentioning sailing around the world. I could have lied, it ain't like I don't know how! Shoot!)

This is looking up the hill into town as we walk away from the piers.

We are pleased with this stay. It has been interesting and we have had a chance to see Lake Gitche Gumme (?sp). Mel tells me that is the name given Lake Superior by the Indians, meaning 'Big Water'.
Thanks for coming along to Marquette, MI with us. We have enjoyed this trip.
Tomorrow we head South, going to Wisconsin. Hope to See Mel and Dar there. That will be the center piece of this trip.

PS: I have spent 2hours fighting the Blogger I hope this one goes....
Did you hear about the little boy who got lost in the YWCA and ended up in the ladies locker room, they grabbed towel, clothes and began to scream.
He stood there puzzled and when it got quite he asked, "Haven't you ever seen a little boy before?"
We have been hearing from our friend Lindie lately, great to hear from you, a fellow traveler, before she settled down.

Moving day agian.... Yep Bill collectors!

I will degress a few days. Right after we pulled into TIKI park in St. Ignace, we went for a walk. There ws no side walk, but there was not traffic we were on the edge of the road. You know how youcan tell a car is slowing and feel it is going to stop. Well, One little car pulled right up beside us and stopped. When we bent down to look in, Guess WHO?

Santa!
He had a Hiawaian Christmas shirt. We laughed so hard we couldn't talk. He laughed with us because he is a Jolly old elf. He just wanted to welcome us to St. Ignace and hoped we had a wonder ful time. WHICH WE DID!

Now moving day.We have a game called the states game. You have a blank outline of the USA and then are given little states to fill in. Michigan is a funny looking state with this Upper Penisula. If I had been designing the USA This would be part of Wisconsin, but it ain't. We have Mechlenburg County down home that has such a shape.

Anyway We are heading West on Highway #2. It winds along Beautiful Lake Michigan for about 40+ miles.

Lake Michigan on my left.
We turned North on 117 through some beautiful country. The roads were exceptional and very little traffic. If you can see my rear view mirror and straight ahead, very little traffic.

Another tree lined shot of #117 and my mirror shows no or little traffic.

It is farm country also, and great driving.

We turned west on #28 another beautiful drive, farm land and Forest. We are headed for Lake Superior. WE have never seen this Great Lake.

Part of the drive we had a RAil Road track a good ways off to the South parallel with the road. And on the right a Beautiful slow-moving stream.

This is not a great shot, but we passed about six Bike packers. Folks who are tenting on bikes. Sorry this one is blurred. It is unique how they hang their belongings in side saddle bags.

We are getting close to Lake superior. We are going to meet the Great Lake at Munising, Michigan. It will be our first glimpse of it.

We finally see the Lake, after #28 turns NOrth. I love seeing something for the first time. I know it is just a big Body of Fresh water, I have just never seen this one. As I said in another entry, Superior is 21' higher than Lake Huron and Lake Michigan.
A beautiful shore line. With great looking beaches along #28.

Close to our destination, we turn north on #41 into the city of Marquette, Michigan. It is nestled on the Southern shore of The Great lake Superior.

Driving into a town is always a surprise in a motor home. All towns look flat with no traffic on a map. Sometimes we are surprised. YES, in the town, SURPRISE, We drove the rig right thru town. No pictures in town, we were navigating the traffic and at least one driver who stopped dead on main street to discharge a passenger, I had to swing around him going up a hill, On the map it looked flat!!! We will come back and take some photo's down town they have one strange looking structure going out into the lake, we wonder what it is.

We have reached our destination. The Marquette Tourist Park. we are in town but in the woods. Checking in we pay and head for site #79.

Surprise, see how much different this new home is!!! We are ready to make this entry and try to find out what fish is good that comes out of that lake.

Thanks for traveling with us. This looks to be an exciting place with some 'stuff to see'.

WHY ATHLETES CAN'T HAVE REGULAR JOBS...
Upon hearing Joe Jacobi of the 'Skin's say: "I'd run over my own mother to win the Super Bowl,"
Matt Millen of the Raiders said: "To win, I'd run over Joe's Mom, too."
Torrin Polk, University of Houston receiver, on his coach, John Jenkins:
"He treats us like men. He lets us wear earrings."
