Trail angels

Betty, from the 2nd coast who is the Editor of: http://viewsfrombenches.blogspot.com/

(Who today is fussing about men not changing the toilet paper!!!!  LOL)

made a statement in her comment about the cold drinks we were given, they might have been angels.

(Cricket, mentioned before, hiking solo, starting the 100 mi wilderness)

Many folk who have hiked the trail or live near it, do neat stuff for hikers.  These folk are referred to as ‘Trail Angels’. In very dry weather we have  come out of the woods to a logging road that was lined with 15-20 gallons of fresh water.  Once in VA and another time in New Hampshire, we came upon a large container of iced down drinks.

Once in Vermont, I was ahead of Sherry and waited until she caught up, to see a small spring fed brook. The little brook was lined with cokes and orange drinks. That time we were close to a road break so we skipped it and left it for the thru-hikers coming along.

We read of a couple that set up their motor home at a road crossing and cooked hamburgers and Hot dogs for those crossing. We have always wanted to do that, never got around to it.

We have hung a couple bags of apples on the trail for those hiking.  We still enjoy picking up hikers and taking them into town for a bath and food restocking. We once met a guy, trail name, Cuppa Joe. He made coffee every morning for himself and a few cups for other campers who might have spent the night.(very few people will carry that extra weight). We were off the trail for some injury, and in our van. So we drove him 30 miles to find a store to stock up on coffee.

(Sir Richard, from the UK, who was extoling the reception he had received here).

We met and hiked a few miles with a man who worked on the race team of Kyle Petty. He was hiking to raise awareness of the Victory Junction Gang, Kyle Petty’s Charity.  He was a great guy and of course had nothing but praise for Kyle. this was during the NASCAR race season, and Kyle let him off to hike the AT.

Later we met a guy who also hiked with him, who said Kyle met them at one road crossing and took all the hikers there to a motel for a meal, room, bath and a nights rest, before returning all of them back to the trail.

There is one place in the mts, not advertised, where a man furnishes hot showers and a place to sleep, with a meal for any hiker who sees his sign on the trail.

These are true Angels to a kid, man or woman thru-hiking who has hiked from 16-25 miles that day, carrying a pack weighing from 30-60 pounds.

Enough, maybe more later.

Thanks for reading the log.

There are truly some great folks in this world, who may not be angels, but certainly make you  feel like they are.

Thanks for the shout out, Jack! How neat that everyone bands together like this and helps out! I am sure it is a pleasant surprise to come across these goodies left by the Trail Angels, especially if that particular part of the trail has been a tough one and a treat is much welcomed and appreciated. Honestly, you and Sherry need to write a book about your adventures on the trail!

I read Betty's comment and her post about the TP too, and am very glad to hear you have met so many of those wonderful angels along the trail. How great that so many are so considerate of others. We need to hear more stories like yours today. People forget how to be nice and it is those tales of angels that remind us of the little things we can do for others that very often mean so much. It's bright and sunny and warming back up here after our chilly day yesterday. I baked my peanut butter cookies then and will be enjoying them for awhile. Just came in from mowing the yard with my push powered by me mower. Time to cool off with a cookie and a tall glass of lemonade! Hope your Wednesday is a wonderful one!

I love that - you mean that some people ahead of you -leave gifts and drinks and coffee for the people coming up? That is so wonderful and such a charitable thing to do. You learned some wonderful lessons on this trail. sandie

I think there is some "trail angel" in a lot of folks. They are more than happy to do a good deed if they know it will be appreciated.

I've always heard good things about the Pettys. Good salt-of-the-earth people.

Hey, Wow, Jack! I was thrilled to get to this blog this morning. I tried to put a note on last night but it vanished into thin ether-waves. Loved reading, especially about the 100 mile wilderness here. It is giving me a goal to work on and look forward to. Glad you guys are having some respite in the mts for awhile! Look forward to seeing you soon.
