I often wonder

How late is too late to go to college seriously? Many seniors go back to school to achieve that degree they missed because of marriage, finances, unplanned pregnancies and various other reasons. I can understand the desire to ‘get’ the degree, but sometimes I do not understand the real logic. To graduate with a degree in nursing at 82 sounds good, but is it logical?

A Corgi in trouble

(Even Corgi’s blame someone else)

Could a person  who dropped out of school at 16, and is now say 70 years old pursue a career as a medical doctor? That takes a minimum of 8 years right? Then some required …..(?)  OJT (On the job training).

********************************

BREAK… the above is a true life example and one of the reason I ask the question. In the process of writing this simple blog entry my ‘old brain’ cannot think of a simple word, so I used OJT.  Most of us seniors have this problem, we cannot command our brain to give us a word we know as well as our name. I can just see me, spending 12 years becoming a surgeon. Now at 89 with a patient on the table ask the nurse for a --------, you know the thing I make a -------- , dadgummit, give me a knife!  The actual word scalpel might come to mind a minute or a week later.

********************************

Now I know that is a silly  example, it is just to make a point. Not everyone can be sharp after retirement age like Heinz(Manfred's dad) over at ‘Stalled at 12’.  But he had his medical training at a young age.

So maybe the medical profession is out, unless some person just wants to prove to themselves he can do it in his/her 80’s.  I guess some of us want to be doctors so we can diagnose ourselves in the privacy of our own minds. LOL. (whoa, I forgot us old folk do that anyway)

about to be annoyed

(Sometimes kids can hit the last nerve)

But what about ART or WRITING? Can school help then?   I have been called an artist, even have been paid for some art work, but I know I am not an ARTIST. But I want to be one. There are folks who read my blog that are artists. They have that natural talent.

Can I actually learn English and composition enough to become a REAL WRITER before I die?  Yes, I have written books, but I am no real author, I am a story teller. I know I am a good story teller, my grand kids have told me so. I even have several fans who say I am a writer, but I am still the story teller.

Enough of this nonsense. Maybe I will quit dreaming and face reality one day. Confused smile

(Yeah, I coulda been…….  But this will do)

PS:

It is enjoyable to see someone with a natural talent!

Oh, EARLY SPRING according to what-his-name! Some weather forecasters need NO education.

gas7

I am old, I remember gas as low as 20¢ a gallon, but most of the time it was 25¢ to 29¢ a gallon. I believe the mystery car is a Hudson. I know the others.

I think keeping our mind active keeps us from aging as fast...

Cute picture with the corgi; I'm sure it is true what he said that the monkey started it :) Thanks for sharing a picture of my favorite dog!

I can't imagine learning a new trade at my age (55) or finishing up an education from years ago. I too have those moments when the word is in my head but can I get it out my mouth is a different story.

As much as we might not like to believe it, we do slow down as we age. Some of that learning, like being a doctor or nurse, might be better for someone who is younger and a little more mentally sharp I do believe.

Sometimes I'll get a medical report of someone in their late 30s or early 40s having a baby. That I can't imagine to have the energy to have a teenager in one's late 50s!

enjoy the day!

I began your post chuckling ... and ended with moist eyeballs.

Jack...
First of all, I love your writing. You are so good at it.
I think that perhaps if one wants to go to school to learn, age doesn't matter. A lot of students who go to college right out of high school are likely not going to 'learn' but are going because it is 'expected' of them to go. Wouldn't it be refreshing if students went there because they had a thirst for knowledge...a love of learning? That happens at any age.
Love the "dadgumit...give me a knife." A good one, Jack! That is so me. What happens to those brain cells? I think mine have traveled elsewhere and are collecting (around my hips and thighs!)
Hugs and smiles,
Jackie
P.S. I am still sick. I am sneezing and have a headache and am hoarse. If you diagnose yourself, could you do the same for me? Oh wait! I think I've already done that. I have a nasty cold.

I don't believe I should try to be
a surgeon..I think of the word about 30 min. later. The person
would have passed on to the other
world. I was trying to think of
singers name last night. I wasn't
thinking and it popped in my mind.
this morning. I don't know where our brain cells go. Mine takes a vacation at times.

I love to learn new things, but I have no desire to go back to school. I don't want another career, I'm really satisfied being just who I am. I think you do a great job of enjoying what you do too. More snow coming down here today.

Hee hee this is a good one Jack. Lynda my daughter suggested I go to college after Mel died when I was 50. I think she thought I would be bored. ME bored? Not a chance, I hated school when I had to go and now I can do what I want to like you and Sherry.

My son is a doctor - did you know that? It is a lot more then 8 years. And it never stops! The learning that is. And the being away from your family, etc.

So be careful about wanting to be a doc... lol

But I sure do think that keeping your mind active and I have the same word problem you do - it is right there on the tip of my tongue!

I love to learn new things and just keeping up with new technology is plenty enough for me to deal with.

You are an amazing author. I love reading your blogs. You bring me to places I could never imagine traveling to. I love it.

Hugs to my favorite couple!
