A Surgery Procedure

Since I have never spent even a night in the hospital except visiting, most of this was new to me, however, there was one thing that wasn’t.  Each new person walking up to my bed would look at a clipboard or my neat wrist band (which I still have on by the way) and ask:

What is your full name?

What is your full social Security number?

Why are you in the hospital today?

I dutifully answered the questions.  My buddy Sonny had experienced some bad times at hospitals. On one occasion his kidney was diagnosed as cancerous and needed to be removed. Sonny got a second opinion, Yes, it needs to come out. It was removed BUT It was not cancerous and in actuality did add to his demise I am sure. Close to the end the other kidney did fail and dialysis  was required three times a week. If you are familiar with that, it was tough on an already very sick man.

When my Mama, Sister Kat, BIL Johnny, Brother Junior and my buddy Sonny were in the hospital I spent a lot of time there. The staff would ask the questions listed above. One night, Sonny-boy was very tired and the Doctor came in and of course asked the same things again.

My best buddy looked at him very seriously and said, “If you  would write that down, you wouldn’t have to ask it every time.”

Needless to say the nurse, doctor and I got a kick out of that.

Anyway I was thinking of Sonny a lot while I was there at the hospital.

Again I want to thank you all once again for the thoughts, words of encouragement and prayers.  And publically thank my girl of 59 years for hearing for me and getting me to the right places at the right time. I have had a great team.

Hope you're feeling better and glad you have Sherry to do all the things she does for you.

Glad to know your sense of humor hasn't suffered any, Jack!

Sonny's comment about the doctor writing this stuff down is laugh-out-loud material. When Tom was last hospitalized I/we grew so weary of answering the same questions. I'm sure there's a good reason they do this, but I still wanted to ask, "Don't you people talk to one another?"

I've never been in the hospital either...well, I had my tonsils taken out when I was very young, but I don't remember if I was in the hospital overnight or not. '

You take care of yourself. We're thinking about you.

That's interesting about them asking your Social Security number; I get the other questions, but that one is an interesting one to ask. Never been in the hospital myself :)

I think with Rick it was name and date of birth they asked for every time. They also made a mark and arrow above the eye he was having surgery on. Guess to keep from doing the wrong one. :-) I didn't see them make a mark on his last surgery. Follow Dr. Sherry's orders! ;-) Sheila

I'm thinking all those questions were a bit much and you are right, they have it written down, why keep on asking them...I think everyone is going overboard these days due to law suits due to mix ups happening. You do hear about some crazy things happening, but then there is a lot of good done and where would we be with out them. You do have a great team there !
