Our trip to Onley, VA
I am amazed at the sparse population of this place called The Eastern Shore. We drive thru five miles of farm country on a back road to get to this RV site. I have mentioned, or alluded to, the fact that this park must at one time, been hopping with RVs and Campers. We drove out today because Sherry is a Birthday card person and we needed some cards for the upcoming birthdays. The lady is frugal and mostly buys her cars at a Dollar Tree or Dollar store.
We drove 20 miles to a small town called Onley, for cards but mostly to sightsee. There is a Walmart, BoJangles and McDonalds there. Also we found a Dollar Tree. Oh we were tickled to see a ‘Farmers Stand’. Yep, they had tomatoes and local sweet corn. BUT after picking one tomato and 6 ears of corn, the total was $7.59. OUCH. Corn nearly $1 an ear. Yep, we paid, we wanted some corn on the cob. I am not sure how many repeat customers they have.
But we had a nice day out. Drove down to a ferry landing that takes tourists (no cars) out to Tangiers Island. I need to look that up, I have never heard of it before, but it must be popular.
I do have a question, I know this plant but cannot name it. Only because I have asked before in another state. I want to say something like Sorgum but I am not sure.
The plants are thickly planted and stand about 4’ tall at the buds. I think the buds/tops are the ‘fruit’ but am not sure. I have never been a farmer (mama and daddy were).

Anyway, that was my question. There are huge fields on the way to the RV ParK. We have spotted three deer and there are hundreds of these Geese over these huge mowed fields here at the campground.
And BTW the corn is good, but not quite as good as the Pennsylvania corn we enjoyed in Lancaster County.

I've no clue about the sorghum (wheat?) ... but enjoyed tagging along to Onley. $1/ear for corn does sound absurd. Then again, the two of you enjoyed a sweet day together. What's that Rick calls it? The cost of doing life.
WoW, $1 an ear but if it's good corn it's worth it ! Onley sounds interesting, we just got back from Florida and welcome the change in Temperatures, I thought running at sea with the Loss of Ventilation below Deck was a distant memory but man was Florida hot, 100+ !!!! I am surprised at how sparse that area is - you must have driven to an unusal place - I thought the population would be extreme. I don't know the name of that plant. Sorry.
price of corn has gone up since i was there. but it's good, so it's worth it.
I think that is grain sorghum--my folks call it milo. It is used for animal feed for poultry and cattle. (So it is in the same family as the sorghum used for molasses, but this kind is probably not used for that.)

Not sure of the plant, but wow with the price and corn and a tomato! Seemed like a lovely day for the two of you! I agree with Sherry, good to buy cards at the dollar store, etc. Cards are lovely to send and get, but the cost of some of them is ridiculous!

Thankfully the corn I've got this summer hasn't been as expensive as yours, and it has been delicious. We have such a short season to enjoy it so most will gladly pay the price. Nothing beats the taste of anything fresh from the garden. Most of the year we buy it in the store and lose out on that fresh flavor. Glad you had a nice little side adventure.
Im like Sherry woth cards. The dollar tree has some pretty good ones. Most people read them then toss them in the trash afterwards anyway. Im so frugel, I have actually taken a picture of a birthday card and text it to my sister. We got a laught out of it and I think she even kept it.win!

Nice pictures on this one Jack. They probably price the corn for tourists. I can't imagine them staying open if they tried to gouge the locals.
