Seeing Harold! and George comes through

Cars of beauty and art:

Now tonight:
Cousin Howard Dewey Darnell came buzzing into town last night late. Howard flew into Florida from Las Vegas, visited some and headed north. After some time in Georgia he drove on up past where he planned to visit in SC to get to see us before we drove out.  He will back track to cover the kin & friends in SC.
We talked into the morning, he was beat. I have always known him as Dewey, but he is mostly known as Howard now. Daddy had 8 brothers and 3 sisters. Many of the brothers were truck drivers. Hisure (Dewey’s dad) was a driver and mechanic. In late life Hisure watched two of our grandsons, Matthew Dillon and Luke Vegas. He was Papa Hisure and they loved that man as I had.

Dewey brought a treasure trove of pictures. During the time today we were looking at the pictures, George called  & came over and FIXED the furnace system, so we are good to go.

Anyway Dewey is single and does a lot of visiting kin. Cousin Harold Fulbright is one of my older cousins. We and Dewey went to ‘R.O.’s BBQ for a sandwich. R.O.’s is a landmark in Gastonia. Actually the slaw is as famous locally as the BBQ. Then we dropped by to see Our oldest cousin on Daddy’s side, Harold Fulbright. He is 86 and has survived a lot, including cancer. He is still spry and sharp as a tack in spite of all he has gone through.
Below, Dewey, Me, Harold and Janine

Harold has always had a great personality. He is also one of the many truck drivers in our family. Oh yes, and for an extra ‘Janine Fulbright Silver,’ Harold’s daughter came in, what a joy. We visited childhoods. Aunt Ruby (a sweetie) married Fred Fulbright (daddy’s side) they lived beside the Herrons (Mama’s side) on ‘The Art Cloth’ mill village in Lowell. When I visited I usually stayed with Cousin Ken Herron and we played with Cousin Billy Fulbright.
The older cousins Billy (Herron), Jimmy, Harold and Fred Jr. once left us kids (Ken, Billy and me) to go to a local fair to ride the ‘un-rideable mule’. They were going to win $50.  Anyone staying on the mule 30 seconds got $50. We kids were so disappointed no one came back rich. In the late 40’s that was about 2 week’s salary in the mill.
Anyway, it was great seeing Harold and having Dewey with us a day before WE HEAD SOUTH IN OUR WHEEL-ESTATE.
As I write this, I have already tucked my girl in. WE are HOME. We hope to leave early in the morning heading south.  LIFE IS GOOD after such a summer as this WAS!

Sounds like a nice visit with sweet friends. You can’t beat RO’s slaw. You could load up a bundle of that stuff and sell it on the roadside in Florida. Haha. Nick on the other hand, likes Blacks BBQ better (RO’s sister).
My girl is “down South” at Disney again this week.

Safe travels!!!

It's great he made it in to see you before you took off. Glad the furnace system is all fixed too. With all the repairs your home should be good as new. Wishing you both safe travels and happy memories in the making.

I think I recall seeing pix of you and Sherry with Harold out west, not that long ago? Your extended family sounds so much like Tom's. He always has the cutest stories, what sort of trouble he and his cousins would get into on their grandfather's farm. That 'unrideable' mule made me laugh out loud.

Jack, I thought for Sure that you won a $50...no success on that mule, eh?
Thanks for the laugh! So happy you had sweet memories through Dewey's pictures. There are always rekindled stories with old pictures. Furnace is fixed, kin has been visited, belly is full of BBQ, life will continue to be fine once again when the wheels hit the pavement heading south. Travel safe and enjoy your closer space with your dear lady.
Love n' hugs from up north where a visit with 2 sisters and Mama today was and is always memorable.
