Conservative?

  Car of the Day

The 59 Dodge. Chrsyler sold this car and others with 'no down payment' and 36 months of low $35 payments, but month 36 had a big $$$$ balloon payment. Lots of folks got hurt.

 So for today:

By example, Sherry and I are very conservative. That is conservative in life style and finances.  I guess it is no secret we are conservative politically as well (she more than I, I am sure)

Some of the most liked clothes I wear came from yard sales and thrift stores. It is no secret in my younger life I wore handmedowns from cousins and church members. That never bothered me in the least.  A lot of my shirts were sewn by mama.  I wore out a lot of collars on shirts and mama could reverse one in a few minutes.

Saturday, we needed a couple tires for the car. We decided which tires and the salesman, Roberto said, “The Goodwill is a few doors down, maybe you would like to spend time there.  We did, I got a nice NEW shirt, tags still on it. Sherry got a top and a pair of shoes.  I love this shirt. It looks cowboyish, and since I have been reading so many westerns, I really do like it and wore it to church Sunday AM.

Over the years Sherry and I have paid attention to our income and have always avoided debt like a plague.  I will never forget my girl’s admonishment when I went into building.  She knew there was a lot of money involved, I formed a separate bank account for the business.  She said, “I know you can built, you have built us a beautiful home, BUT PLEASE do not go into debt more than we can pay, if something goes wrong.”

I didn’t and we were successful.  I fear for our grands who might just want more than they can actually afford. Now to be sure we have been concerned about out sons and their handling of finances, but we are ‘hands off’ with the grands,  If someone is to be ‘worrying’ about them it is our sons not us. ;-)

This entry was influenced from headlines I just read, “This generation is more dependent on credit cards than any one previous.”  That concerns me.

When someone buys appliances, they cannot afford to replace good appliances, because the new design is ‘COOL’, that scares me.

This is Sunday

  Car of the Day

So for today:

Sunday has changed in the past few years.  Since the USA is a nation formed by Christians, much of our laws and customs are somehow related to the Basic Christian beliefs.

In my early lifetime openly working on Sunday was frowned on, YOU SHOULD BE IN CHURCH..... UNLESS your occupation was required to keep life on an even keel, i.e. Drs, Nurses, Firemen, Police, Farming chores (feeding and milking etc), and others of course.

Things like mowing your lawn, doing the washing outside in plain sight and so on, were frowned on. In a small town there was usually one gas station open.  When the station or any store did open it did so AFTER: 12 noon.

Today? It is a different world. For many in this nation it is only another day of work.  Good or Bad, it is that.  Somethings I sure miss, especially the slower pace, but maybe that is my age showing.

‘Little League Games’ on Sunday morning would definitely have been frowned on. Kids were supposed to be in church or Sunday School!!

Sundays showed a lot of porch sitting, visiting and resting. Just sitting in the porch swing and talking was such a sweet time.  NOT EVERYONE or every church was active morning and night, BUT many were.

Good or Bad?  Some of both as always.  WE humans as a rule do not like change and are slow to accept it.  Truthfully  we all accept and resist change according to our own make up. Truthfully many times there is no RIGHT or WRONG except in our OPINIONS.

I WORK MANY SUNDAY AFTERNOONS. It is usually doing something I enjoy and that relaxes me.

PS:  I was surprised years ago when I heard Chic-filet , then Hobby Lobby, closed on Sunday!

Running 'round.

 Today's car:

Avon, at one time a top collector's item, now gone by the wayside. Sherry got this for me, I still have it. Avon shaving lotion in a '55 Chevy.

For today:

If you ever listened to Country Western you heard:

When I go out walking there's lots of loose talking

They say we're unhappy and we'll break apart

But darling it's not true because I still love you and I do it all with my heart

She said she likes the preacher! Ah ha, nobody likes that dude.

I said, “Former Attorney General Barr is getting FAT!”

She is supposed to say in agreement, ‘it looks like it!’

But she says, “I am not sure about that, he still looks good!”

See!!!!  I’m sure you can see what I mean….

Since she reads this blog I am sure she will watch her step from here on out! ;-)

Okay, you know I am joking at her expense, but she can take it, she’s COOL!.  She has put up with me for over 66 years,  Wow lot’s of folks don’t even live that long.

We know we are blessed to still have each other and cannot imagine the feelings that occur at the loss of a loving mate.  Some of you have experienced this and we know, if time continues it will be one of us left.

We are trying to pay attention. Susie lost Ted and Jilda lost Rick here in Bloggersville.  There were and are many losses in our lives, knowing how to handle them is the key. That is why we pay attention to what YOU say concerning loss.

Losses? We have had many:  Sherry and I are both the last of our families, our parents and siblings have all passed. … BUT, BUT WE KNOW THAT NONE  has hit us as hard as losing our SOUL MATE will.  We do not live in dread, but know inside now that in our mid 80s at best we have only a few years to enjoy each other. SO even in the present ‘family mental crisis’ I look at my bride and say, “No matter what Honey, it is Still just YOU AND ME! We must get thru this, and get our lives back.”

A song years ago by the Essex, said, “That is easier, easier said than done!” AND IT IS.

Thanks for your gift of time to read and comment on my drivel, it really does help.

Headed South thinking of names.....

Thanks for the sweet and neat comments on the last post.  Life has slowed down here considerably and this is Thursday night.  In the morning we will be on the road, driving the car only this time.  I am not a fan of packing a suitcase, I seem to always forget something.

Names,  Are there any names that stick in your mind over your life time.  When I learned that my name 'Jackie' was the female spelling (true or not I did not know but believed it), I was ashamed of my name and was glad when I was mostly called Jack. ;-O

When we moved to Belmont I met a man named 'Jinx.'  He and his wife Minnie were wonderful folk. They had a daughter 'Joan' in the family, about mine and Sherry's age.  I could not believe it when Joan gave birth to twin girls and named them "Tricksy and Tracey".  Only Joan would name a daughter TRICKSY!

Sadly Tricksy passed away this week in her sleep and we stayed for the funeral.

Tricksy was a 'take charge person' the minister mentioned that very thing in his eulogy.  She kept Sherry & Joan in contact.

What is the most different name you can remember?

See you more often (I hope) and am hoping that soon things will be more normal in our lives.

PS: In 1956, My first traffic ticket came from Officer Burris of the NCHP.  I tried to out run him and he quickly caught me in front of the home of Jinx.  Who immediately called my dad.  I always thought I was Jinxed.  LOL

Radio programs and my Robot

  Car of the Day

Ahhh the '50s Studebaker.  Caught a lot of heat with comments.  Actually it was a well built car.  Sure got attention.

So for today (WRitten awhile back just ran across this, I hope I haven't published it before.):

I was fortunate as a kid, I had my own radio.  I listened to the evening radio programs.  The earliest was at 5 pm. That was the Lone Ranger a 3o minute program Mon, Wed & Fri. The rest started about 7-8PM.

I took my radio apart many times to see how it worked. Of course I had no idea of what the parts did, except the tuner, I could see it’s actions as I moved it with my finger.

I migrated in my thinking to entertaining kids at church as I grew up. The light effected relays got my interest. For years remote doors at stores used a light beam to control the door. When you walked thru the beam it actuated a relay that started a motor to open the door. Closing was automatic.

I was asked to speak at a Week long youth camp.  I had built a talking robot.  It’s speech was a prerecorded conversation. I would speak then casually move out of the light beam and it would answer or continue the conversation. I needed someone to use as my robot’s voice and a friend, Paul Collins, volunteered.

Wouldn’t you know that in the first class, the first conversation, one of Paul’s kids was in the class and called out, “My dad is in that Robot!”

Best laid plans of mice and men. LOL

But I still remember those radio programs. Radio forces you to use your imagination. I could close my eyes and imagine how the characters looked.

There was:

Gunsmoke  Marshal Matt Dillon, played by William Conrad on radio came on Sunday nights at 10PM for 30 miniutes.

(Note: Conrad had the voice but not the physical appearance of Marshal Dillon.)

The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet

Father Knows Best

Amos 'n' Andy

The Beulah Show

Gang Busters  (True police stories)

FBI in peace and War

Fibber McGee and Molly

Most of these were 30 minute programs once a week.

The robot mentioned early started an entertaining teaching kids ministry. I added magic, chalk drawings, ventriloquism. Sherry did programs from Cuba to Canada. We learned a lot and had a lot of great experiences.

Cutting back here in NC headed back to Florida for family support.

Hank, one of a kind

 Today’s Car

Hank and Steve's favorite car, the Pontiac TransAm

 For Today:

Some things just hit you HARD! His name was Hank MACE! A young fellow you would be proud to call a brother, dad or friend.  I met Hank after he reached the 16 year old level.  He was close friends with Steve Helms my nephew.  The both bought Trans Ams with the money from their first jobs. One had a stick shift, the other an automatic.  Son Jack Jr. reminded me of that fact of the past!

I am sure Hank was not perfect, but to me he was the  ideal man. He was always the mechanic growing up, he ended up as head mechanic with UPS methinks.

ONCE I was having trouble with the rough ride of a Monaco RV we had just purchased.  I mentioned it on my Blog.  I got a comment from Hank.  I was very surprised that he EVEN read the Blog. “Hey Jack, I can fix that ride for you!”

What?

He came over to the Coach and in 15 minutes he readjusted the air ride. No charge.  HA, no way, we gladly gave him $100 for the trouble call.

He said he was sure that the air had NEVER been adjusted.

Lots of good memories involving Hank.

Word of his death shook US but I am sure there is no way for our nephew Steve to grasp the loss of a BEST FRIEND.  I Know that, because Steve’s dad (Sonny Helms) was my Best friend, and there is not a day goes by I do not miss him.

I know you too have lost someone special.

My present problem took a back seat for awhile today as I worked and thought of Hank.  HE WAS SPECIAL!!!

PS: I still put in about 10 hours today and Yes I am beat.  Thanks for reading.  Love from NC

Busy

I have found that even staying busy doesn't rest one's mind, but  it helps,  We still have the hammer hanging over our heads to know what the Florida courts will decide concerning a loved one next month.  This has been in the court system for over a year and a half.  I keep  hearing '  delays are a good sign for a defendant in the court system',  That may be so, but it keeps one in a quandary,

The house next door is now painted, I installed 'slap down flooring' in the wash room and kitchen. I had planned on moving the old carpet into the basement and garage, but after two weeks my girl determined NADA.  So I compromised, she suggested carpeting our picnic area. You would be surprised to know it turned out great.  We could never get grass under the trees, so now the dirt is covered at least.

The cats like it. LOL

We have been putting in 8-10 hours a day.  Yesterday was blind washing day. I figured an easy way to do them hanging them from our high back deck.

The carpet man is supposed to be here Wednesday.  He has been hard to pin down.

It is still 4 weeks before the next court date which is supposed to be the final one.  This has been the roughest year and a half of my life.

This is the first time I have took time to turn on to Bloggersville in days.  I hope to have time to catch up soon.  I appreciate you taking the time to read 'crying time', I appreciate it.

Thanks to you guys that take the time to mention us in prayer.
