'The Book That Jack Built' by Jack Darnell of Coker Creek, TN

Lately Blog entries have been a pleasure. That is the source of info for the entries has been good. I tell Sherry we are gonna have to retire so we can have ‘Road-runner’ or something more reliable than the cell service to reach the internet. HA! Making the entries has been frustrating, losing things in the vast space of the net and waiting minutes for things that normally should take a second. How soon we get accustomed to things being done at the speed of light and electricity, 186,000 miles per second (The speed of electricity is a guess).

Go to Amazon.com, Jack Darnell. Do you ever 'look inside' a book on Amazon? If you haven’t, and you are a reader, you can learn a lot. For example, I read excerpts from Jack’s book, ‘The Book that Jack Built’ long before I was able to buy a copy from him personally. Last night I finished the book, I was able to learn what happened to ‘Little Tom’ the black kitten that was looking for a real home. I knew after reading some of Jack’s work that the ending would be ‘My type of ending’ and it was.

The story I was most interested in, was the story with‘Big Red’ and ‘Will’ as characters of the story entitled, ‘Ain’t Gonna Study War No More’. The setting is the Civil War. A very good spoof, and I was thrilled with the ending.

A capture of Jack inside his home!
The real ‘Jack Darnell’ has taken up my thoughts lately. As I got a drink of water just awhile ago I turned to Sherry and said, “I wish I had taken a picture of Jack’s water buckets in the kitchen with the old dippers in them.” Jack and I agreed that the old ‘gourd’ dippers seemed to help the taste of the water somehow.

'Smiling Jack'.
You would love the 'Christmas Violin' story (Actually brought 'happy tears'). I could go on and on about Jack and this book. Twelve original stories straight from a house (cabin) built before the Civil War, on a manual typewriter and sometimes at night under a kerosene lamp.

Saying good bye on the porch (Picture lifted from Yvette's collection, Picassa).
I am not an agent of Jack’s and we are definitely not competition. But if you want Jack’s book it is available through yawarren@gmail.com or by phone 423 261 2047. That is Yvette, Jack’s publisher. Jack also has a phone, believe it or not. He is not ‘backward’, he does have a small inverter and a battery hooked to a TV, if he needs weather or news. No way is this man ignorant; he just enjoys his basic life style. He lives Green, as today’s language indicates. Sorta like the country singer who sang, ’I was Country before Country was Cool’. Hahahahaha!
So today is our last full day of our Vacation.
Fred and Frances will eat ‘country’ with us. Oh yes and Sherry does make a great salmon pattie fried crisp in olive oil (we are going to live forever!!!). She switched from Canola oil to olive when we heard it was better for us. (? Who knows?)

Thanks for coming by the log,
Nite Shipslog

PS:
I am tempted to try to visit Jack again this evening, nah, I have bugged him enough.

I like both Jack Darnells, LOL. The Jack Darnell you visited seems to have it all together with a good lifestyle that works for him! (and I know you and Sherry have a great lifestyle that works for you guys :)

his book of tales does seem indeed interesting :)

isn't it funny but just a short few years ago we never heard of the Internet and now we get upset if something doesn't instanteously load. We are indeed very fickle.

enjoy your final day of vacation

Jack and Sherry! What a wonderful few days it has been - and with the grand finale today of fishcakes cooked in olive oil. The food was excellent. Frances and I both thank you for your friendship which we consider a great treasure. Drive safely and do come back SOON!

Thanks so much also for the Bible stories last night. Chloe Jean will never forget you two. I wish all of your blog readers could have heard you "deliver" the story last night. You made wonderful memories for the Brannen Bunch!!!

I love that Jack lives "green", growing tired of that word! Off the grid a little? I like that better! Reading your posts about him has really intrigued me! This is the simple life I would enjoy! Thanks for sharing! :)

TO SHERRY AND JACK,
ME BEING AN OPTIMIST, HAVE ENJOYED LIFE FROM BABYHOOD IN THE 'ROARING TWENTIES' , TEENAGER DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION, MILITARY IN THE SOUTHWEST PACIFIC, DRIVING GREYHOUND BUSES FOR THIRTY TWO YEARS AND NOW ENJOYING THE 'FAST EXPANDING ELECTRONIC INVENTIVE AGE'.

FIRST TIME SEEING AN I-POD WAS YESTERDAY. IT WAS PLACED IN FRONT OF ME AND EARPLUGS IN PLACE AND THERE WAS A JOEL OSTEEN SERMON IN PROGRESS.
HAD TO ASK WHAT IS THIS CONTRAPTION CALLED ? AN I-POD DAD. ONE OF MY SWEET DAUGHTERS HAD ONE.
HERE I HAD BEEN FEELING UP TO DATE, HAVING AN OLDER MODEL COMPUTER.
A 'BREAK-THROUGH DURING THE GREAT DEPRESSION WAS A GIANT STRIDE FROM RADIO TUBES TO TRANSISTORS. REMEMBER THAT ? GREAT TIMES.
TO COMPLIMENT SOMEONE WOULD BE THE EXPRESSION, YOU OUGHT TO BE ON RADIO.

I KEEP HOPING THAT THERE WILL BE AN ADVANCEMENT WITH 'PROPULSION POWER', USING POLES OF THE EARTH FOR MAGNETIC-PROPULSION.
TIME WILL TELL AS IT HAS IN RECENT GENERATIONS. GOD HAS THE POWER TO BRING FORTH THESE INVENTIONS AS HE CHOOSES TO DO SO. sam
