Make-up Mirrors Should be ILLEGAL

lighted-magnifying-makeup-mirror

A couple days ago my girl had left her make up mirror out.  You know the one. round on a pedestal,  it flips from a real mirror to the Frankenstein’s monster side.

article-2285296-1852AA83000005DC-779_634x477

I decided to look into it, since it does such a great job on my Sherry. I was sitting there and I could not resist. I gave it the test, “Mirror, Mirror on the table, who is fairest of the able?” It said nothing so I looked.

Now back up, In the late 1940’s or early 1950’s there was a song. That said “If you are walking along the beach, and you should see a great big box and it’s within your reach, DON’T EVER STOP TO OPEN IT UP BECAUSE MUCH TO YOUR SURPRISE YOU WILL DISCOVER A (physical knock) Knock, knock, knock right before your eyes.”

stock-photo-17927740-shocked-gasping-young-man

Well when I looked into that THING I gained 20 years of age. There were knots, spots, hair, holes (a little dirt) and miniature hair. There were valleys where wrinkles once lay. I even saw wrinkles I know I did not have!  It scared the xxx out of me.

woman-looking-in-mirror-vintage-e1343019650424

I started to throw it away, but thought better of it for my own safety. But I suggest everyone else throw them away, they are intimidating.

They are probably a danger to society and should be banned.

zadromagmaginfying-mirror

I am disgusted at how worn out I looked, Please do not use them. They are dangerous.  I am going to suggest a national recall due to a danger to America as we know it.

We had a big announcement to the family

Grandson Stephen and his beautiful sweet wife Jennifer are expecting a baby.  So with today’s ultra sound, they learn the sex of the baby early.

Remember when NO ONE knew until the  baby discovered America. Our two boys were no surprise I KNEW.  hahahahahaha

STELLA AND TONY 001 - Copy

We considered it a privilege that they wanted to have the family meet here at the motor home for the announcement. So Jennifer comes in with a tray of cup cakes.  We visit for awhile and nothing was said about the gender of the coming bundle of joy.

Then Jennifer passed out the cupcakes, no one took a bite until she announced, when you eat the cup cake you will know whether it is a boy or girl.

STELLA AND TONY 001

I am pretty thick sometimes to be so danged smart.  I started eating the cup cake, I heard nothing from the cake. I heard every body else yell,  IT’S A BOY!

I am eating the cup cake, it has a pretty blue center and I STILL DO NOT KNOW! Now I admit to being slow, but when I learn, I NEVER FORGET. We are having the GREAT GRANDSON!

Proud Mother of the BOY, Jennifer, she will be a great mama!STELLA AND TONY 002

Then there is dear old dad to be, A great guy and a good grandson, Stephen…

STELLA AND TONY 003

This is a great time in a couple’s life. Steve is getting a handle on his life, one more year or semester, (according to how the college he transfers to counts it) for his degree.

Jen is a Registered nurse and I would give odds she is a good one.

So my Sherry is getting older Surprised smile, another great grand on the way.Winking smile

Thanks for stopping by the Shipslog.

Our (?) Cat…

cat 003

This has been our only pets until  “THE CAT”

cat 002

When we first bought this place I saw a gray cat every once in awhile.  Cats frustrate and amaze me at the same time. It would not come when called of course and took off in a flash as soon as we saw each other.

Stella lives here now. I was amazed to see ‘my’ cat walk up to her and sorta rub it’s ears on her leg and feet, you know like scratching or soothing an itch (or being friendly who knows?)

We haven’t fed it but the dude eats somewhere, cause it is not undernourished.  I think  I like it, but we are not going to be around long enough to make a lasting relationship.Smile.

Day before yesterday I changed both fuel filters, then started the coach it ran well.  Yesterday I removed a broken dishwasher and installed a new one. Since Reece (granddaughter who lives here now) will be around without us, I actually for the first time bought insurance on the dishwasher.

When I say Reece & Stella lives here. I mean they live in our house, we just park behind it. This is our home base and we have a spot with full hookup behind the house.  I have made many improvements (without permits) and I am always expecting a letter in the mail, “Notice has been taken of the car and RV ports and the large storage buildings…etc..

Anyway the TO DO list is being cut down a little at the time…

I changed the oil in this Cummings Engine yesterday. After I finished I told Sherry Now I have finished the moat aggravating job (plumbing under the house), the simple job of changing the fuel filters, and the DIRTIEST JOB Changing the oil.

Diesel oil is the dirtiest oil of any vehicle. Glad it is done. Now I take the 5 gallons of used oil back to the store to recycle it.

In few minutes we leave here for something I look forward to, we are going to meet Tony. A first cousin I haven’t seen in years. On Daddy’s side there were 14 siblings, so I have more first cousins than I know.  I am looking forward to it. Sherry is going along to tell me what I hear. Embarrassed smile

I’m back. Had a great time, Here we are:

LSMFT

    Ad%2520Lucky%2520Strike%2520LSMFT%25202

I just learned recently that actually stood for: Lucky Strikes Mean Fine Tobacco.

              LuckyStrikeAdvertising-04jpg

All my buddies said it meant “Loose Straps Means Floppy T-t---s.”  You can’t believe teen agers, well maybe it was the crowd I ran with, Vondale and Buddy.

                   Santa-smoking-e1354896128894

I ran with kids that sang, “On a Hill far away stood an old Chevrolet”

And when the preacher preached all liquor and beer should be thrown in the river, my buddies sang, “Shall We Gather At the River.”

And when the Preacher asked if there would be any stars in your crown, they sang, “No not One.”

Kids have fun, not even thinking sacrilegious, and since we didn’t have the video stuff, we just made our fun. I think I played one season of semi-organized baseball as a kid. We did not have uniforms, but everyone wore jeans and a white T-shirt.  It was probably a forerunner of little league (in that area). There wasn’t a lot of practice and coaching, just show up for a game. I cannot remember a parent being there to yell encouragement or fuss at a call. Just the kids and your ‘coach’ and some onlookers. As a matter of fact I do not remember umpires. I do remember it was for fun and it was.

There were still a few A-model Fords around, I cannot remember a T-model used as regular transportation.  The most unique thing I can remember was a wealthy man in Valdese, Albert Tron (?), he drove a early 30’s model Plymouth. The driver’s seat was worn down to the springs and he had a towel or something over them. A kid wonders why a rich man doesn’t buy a new car?

I played the trumpet growing up, I look back and wonder why I didn’t try the guitar.  On many summer evenings I sat on the edge of the porch at the Page’s ( small farm) while Garland picked the guitar and sang. His sons could also sing well at 10 & 12 years old. they harmonized like the Everly Brothers.

I suspect the youth of today enjoy life as much, we just seemed to have more physical social interaction.

Thanks for coming this way for a trip back in time.

PS: (one more ‘lived’ sermon)

Today, I was traveling in Kenya and I met a refugee from Zimbabwe. He said he hadn't eaten anything in over 3 days and looked extremely skinny and unhealthy. Then my friend offered him the rest of the sandwich he was eating. The first thing the man said was, “We can share it.”

Best sermons are lived; not preached

BREAKING: Heaviest element known to man discovered, not Iron!

I have a friend, really I do. When he was born he was christened ‘Richard’ not King Richard just Richard. His daddy called him Buddy. So we all called him Buddy.

His first grade teacher called the roll and no one answered to Richard. Since everyone else had answered the roll, she walked back to friend Buddy and asked, “Son what is your name?”

“Buddy Sandsbury  ma’am.”

“Well Buddy, from now on your name is Richard.”

When he got home he was crying a little and his mama asked, “What is the problem don’t you like school?”

“It’s okay, but, can a teacher change your name?”

“No son, only you can do that.”

“Well she did, now I am Richard!”  It was then that  mama realized the problem.

I just heard from Buddy. After he read my post featuring Iron, the element Fe, The actual atomic weight is  56.8 (or close) Anyway He sent me this update:

The **CSIRO has discovered the heaviest element yet known to science.

The new element is Governmentium (Gv). It has one neutron, 25 assistant neutrons, 88 deputy neutrons and 198 assistant deputy neutrons, giving it an atomic mass of 312. These 312 particles are held together by forces called morons, which are surrounded by vast quantities of lepton-like particles called peons.

Since Governmentium has no electrons, it is inert. However, it can be detected because it impedes every reaction with which it comes into contact. A tiny amount of Governmentium can cause a reaction  to take from four days to four years to complete an action that normally takes less than a second.

Governmentium has a normal half-life of 2 - 8 years. It does not decay but instead undergoes a reorganization in which a portion of the assistant neutrons and deputy neutrons exchange places. In fact, Governmentium's mass will actually increase over time, since each reorganization will cause more morons to become neutrons, forming isodopes.

This characteristic of moron promotion leads some scientists to believe that Governmentium is formed whenever morons reach a critical concentration. This hypothetical quantity is referred to as critical morass. When catalyzed with money, Governmentium becomes Administratium, an element that radiates just as much energy as Governmentium since it has half as many peons but twice as many morons.

*****     *****     *****     *****

Since I am now educated, I thought you should be also…

PS1: There are times I like nonsense that states a fact.

PS2:

Growing up I only knew Buddy a few years.

I have been knocked down by a few ‘ruffians’, while on the ground, a thought rushed thru my head, “I should have hit him first.”

In Buddy case, the ruffian was on the ground thinking, I was going to hit him first. ‘is ain’t right!

Church back massage and playing with words

What is it with folks who like to rub someone’s back in church? A year or so ago we were at a funeral and the lady in front of us continually rubbed the back of the girl beside her, I think it was a daughter.

Today, the lady in front of us was continually rubbing the back of the young man next to her.  I know her and she is a sweet lady, the second wife of a dear friend. The young boy is a step son. They have a good relationship.

article-2581538-1C4FA1A300000578-794_634x536

Of course I am easily distracted. I evidently caused distraction as a young married fellow, I was a kisser. Folk who were kids back then have said, “Sherry was ALWAYS kissing Jack!” I always say, “I know, and it was so embarrassing!”Surprised smileEmbarrassed smile.

DEB987

I took my reading glasses to church this morning. I could see the small key board on my kindle, I kept up with the pastor for awhile.  I finally lost, so I gave up and resumed  reading the dictionary. I was down to the word ‘iron’.  Such an interesting word. IRON?  yes. I remember studying the stone age, bronze age and the iron age. You have to be a curious person,  for iron to make an impression. Big deal, humans started using iron for tools and implements.

eb7a4c38ca9667de930cf52eba3bb371

I wish I had a enjoyed a teacher who would impress on me the technical steps required to be able to HAVE iron for  implements. Thank the Lord, we have always had smart people (scientists)  who could think ‘outside the box’ as they say today. The iron age started around 1300BC can you imagine how someone got a furnace hot enough to melt the iron out of the ore? Melt point is 2800F boiling point over 5000F. Or better yet, who thought of it?

L169_CIFRa5bc147aab7ac5125cb78e3d5c953ed0old-ax-oak-stump-rusty-isolated-white-background-35749517

Of course I had to look up the atomic weight, it is 26 and the symbol for iron is Fe (for ferrous).

steelworker

You needed that, right?

Ah, I remember now, we iron clothes (or used to), we even iron out our problems.  Then of course there is the ‘Iron’. Yeah we still have one, Sherry’s ironing board is our kitchen table.  Some of you  folks use a nine ‘iron’ on the golf course.

steel_worker

Mama had a dictionary that had pictures of iron workers pouring red molten iron from huge iron pots. I still remember the men were bathed in sweat.

We even eat iron!

So return to your ironing and I will find a picture of an iron horse.

The Hand written contract, a thing of the past.

A year ago I took some old records from our lock box at the bank. The box only contains paperwork.  Just last night I ran across them in my drawer here and decided to go thru them. In the building business I have had my name on many deeds for short periods of time. I had several deeds in the stack and I threw them out. ?Then I ran into a jewel that made me smile. A sixty thousand dollar purchase from a nice lady represented by her friend Mr. Bullard.

houses jack built scan0003

(Me on the left, Jim, Dick and my little sister Kat. Shirl was taking the picture. In front of the first house I ever built. This one I was the only worker from the ground up!)

Mr. Bullard was a nice guy, but every piece of property he sold me, his words were, “I am bringing this to you first.”  I learned later I was usually the third guy he had approached.   I still liked him. The unique thing about this buy was the contract; hand written, and since the owner was financing, the payment schedule was  also in long hand. I watched as it was written using the hood of a car for a desk. The interest was to be 12% and Bullard did the math in his head as he wrote each yearly payment. (I checked it later with a calculator, he was correct). Such an agreement is absolutely unheard of now, and even then it was very unique.

houses jack built scan0040

I only  built 5 houses there and just last year sold the rest for less than I paid for it per acre, but we no longer needed it.

I had to laugh at another deed. I bought a small piece of property to build on. My surveyor called me  to tell me I had no problems, but the neighbor did. The property I had bought included a widow’s drive way. “Jack you  don’t need it, why don’t you just give her the driveway, but I suggest you tell her she is responsible for the cost of transfer. I will give her the survey work.”

I said ok, the next day I talked to the lady. She understood (to a point), “I have been using that drive for 50 years, it should be mine.”

“I agree and now it is, but the recording and deed prep by an attorney will cost about $125. That will be your responsibility.”  Reluctantly she said that is fair. I gave her a strip of land 14ft widex300ft.

That night I received a call from her son who said, “14 ft isn’t wide enough”.

Being as nice as I could, I said “The present drive is 10 ft., the value of the strip 14x300 is about $2000. If that isn’t enough land for you, we will just forget it and I will allow her to us my land.  What the next owner will say is another story.”

His answer was, ‘they would take it.’

I had two big smiles, memories from a stack of trash papers, both are honestly good memories, even the last one.

Life has changed, trust must be enforced by an attorney. I have actually built two houses on a handshake.  Times change.

Home, by Edgar Guest.

It takes a heap o living in a house to make a home.

A heap o' sun an' shadder, an' ye sometimes have t' roam

Afore ye really 'preciate the things ye lef' behind,

An' hunger fer 'em somehow, with 'em allus on yer mind.

    classic-old-home

It don't make any differunce how rich ye get t' be,

    How much yer chairs an' tables cost, how great yer luxury;

It ain't home t' ye, though it be the palace of a king,

Until somehow yer soul is sort o' wrapped round everything.

    6329628665_8b4ba6fb21

    Home ain't a place that gold can buy or get up in a minute;

    Afore it's home there's got t' be a heap o' livin' in it;

Within the walls there's got t' be some babies born, and then

    Right there ye've got t' bring 'em up t' women good, an' men;

And gradjerly as time goes on, ye find ye wouldn't part

With anything they ever used -- they've grown into yer heart:

The old high chairs, the playthings, too, the little shoes they wore

Ye hoard; an' if ye could ye'd keep the thumb-marks on the door.

    fhouse3

Ye've got t' weep t' make it home, ye've got t' sit an' sigh

    An' watch beside a loved one's bed, an' know that Death is nigh;

An' in the stillness o' the night t' see Death's angel come,

An' close the eyes o' her that smiled, an' leave her sweet voice dumb.

Fer these are scenes that grip the heart, an'when yer tears are dried,

    Ye find the home is dearer than it was, an' sanctified;

An' tuggin' at ye always are the pleasant memories

O' her that was an' is no more -- ye can't escape from these.

    old-house1

Ye've got t' sing an' dance fer years, ye've got t' romp an' play,

    An' learn t' love the things ye have by usin' 'em each day;
