Walking

As I get older I want to stay active, I really want to be able to do what I could when I was thirty, but we all know that is only a day dream.

Sherry’s brother Vernon, used to run 30 miles when he was 40-50 yrs old. He was an active guy. He loved tree work; climbing, trimming and dropping limbs. He climbed a tree with two chain saws running and hanging from his belt. Nothing bothered him as he got older he stopped the running but not the trees. He was climbing and trimming trees when he was 74.

One day, old age got him, you know the forgetful part. He always religiously kept his safety harnesses hooked.  BUT that day, he had disconnected and started down then saw a limb that needed trimming. He leaned back and there was no support. Vern fell. about 15-20 feet. I thought of Vernon when Lucy mentioned her grandson.

They air lifted him to emergency, and put him back together. That was his start down hill. All of a sudden the iron man is showing his age. His second knee replacement did not go well. Infection settled in, one of those go in and try to fix it things.

Nurses and Doctors must watch their words near a patient. He over heard someone say, ‘we almost lost Mr. Harris last night’.  That sent him into a very deep depression.  Vernon seems to be coming out of it now, thank God and he seems more himself, but now all of a sudden Vernon the handsome iron man, is showing his age.

Vernon is 5 yrs. Sherry's senior, it used to get to my sweet wife, our kids would ask her, who is oldest you or Vernon?

I love the guy, he is a war hero. Jumped out of many good airplanes. (That is a common joke in the military, why would anyone in their right mind jump out of a perfectly good Aircraft?) He is in much better spirits.

I said all that to say I think Vernon done a lot of damage to his knees running when he was younger. He didn’t help them climbing trees.

Now that I am older, I think walking is one of the best exercises for me and my bride. Not only the walking, but the conversation. Walking and talking got us thru the drug abuse of our sons. Walking and talking got us thru the pressures of  the divorces of our sons. Now with unmentioned problems, walking again is helping us cope with family problems.

Walking is good. Walking and talking is better. This girl doesn’t like me to reach out to hold and kiss her in public, but sometimes on the walks I just can’t help it. LOL. I can get by with that, but  while shopping? she flat won’t allow it. (shucks!)

Vernon sounds like quite a guy. It's a shame when something happens to steal your thunder like that. I'm glad to hear he's coming out of it now. You're right about the knees being ruined by all that running. I used to walk 8-10 miles a day, a mere 8 years ago... now I can hardly walk from the front door to my car. My knees are shot. I'm happy you and your wife can still enjoy a long walk. It's one of the most exhilirating things. Lots of inner peace is brought forth by the way it helps clear your head of all the cobwebs. And stealing a kiss along the way is a nice bonus.

It sounds like Vernon has lived a good life, and I wish him many more happy years. We walk occasionally but not on a daily basis like we should. No excuses, besides laziness. You and your bride are good role models for us. Stealing kisses is always fun.

I walk by myself, but I like it because I can go at my own pace. I'm pretty good company for myself, too. ;-)

Vernon also has a band that entertains for Assisted Living Centers. I did sing with them
until I retired. He entertains the Children
and does tricks with his Yo-Yo. He would have his pockets full of change and when he would stand on his head the money that fell out was for the Children. Vernon and I would also cut a
rug on the dance floor. They stopped the football game the other night and had a special pray for him. He is know a Great Entertainer
and a GREAT MAN.

You two are so blessed. I know I've said it before but I'll say it again. To have each other to walk and talk with is a wonderful thing. Take it from one who rarely has anyone to walk or talk with. Life is good when you have someone special to share it with.We all do get older, some faster than others, but still it sounds like Vernon has some good years ahead too. Wear and tear on the body does make a difference after awhile. As for me I'll take what I can get...everyday is a blessing.

Yes it is so disapointing when you can no longer do what you once could and when your health starts doing down hill. I hate it when a word won't come to me and I have to search around and subsitute a word. You and Sherry still look sooo good though.

They say walking is the best exercise, so I think you and Sherry on onto something. We walk the dog, but it is mostly a stop and sniff and smell the roses type of pace so right now we are supplementing his exercise with gym exercise. You are so right about doctors having to be careful with what they say in front of patients; it could be demoralizing indeed!

Walking is a good way to solve problems or at least be able to get issues out, maybe they can't be solved but can at least be expressed.

so just keep on walking!

Jack you and Sherry keep walking and talking and I'm sure you will be doing it a long time. Thanks for the birthday wishes it was October 3 and I was. Let me figure it up, 77 but don't tell anybody, lol.Vernon has lived a good life and I pray he will get through this. Take care, Jean.

Jack another good place to talk one on one is to hold hands in bed, (neither of us could do any more)and talk. It brought us closer. Not as much excersise. Don't have spell check on here.

Sounds like Vernon is quite the man! Who else could look back and say he climbed trees until his mid-seventies? I understand that need to walk and talk. Frances is un-able to walk with me - but we can talk as we sit on the porch in our rockers - or preferably (for me) while we ride the mule. I also understand that strong impulse that hits when you just want to reach out and take her into your arms - and te resulting frustration when she reminds you that, "We're in public!" Haha.

Talking is key to a strong marriage, but of course, you already know that :o)
