NO Tolerance, WE are MEAN!

 Some thoughts for today (written Sun AM):

I am seldom alone. Sherry and JJr are driving 70 miles to a church he has been following on the net, with Pastor Keith Moore. SO right now it is just me in a quiet RV. My mind wanders, I kick myself for not scheduling the concrete pour for an RV slab much sooner. I am normally NOT a procrastinator.  Now rain will further delay the concrete pour.

 I am thinking of a T-shirt I saw yesterday. I hesitate to post a picture, but I will, because some things we should face. It seems in our country we get meaner by the day.

WE still have many people who live by the golden rule. BUT some are selective. The Golden rule is NOT normal for a human. When humans are done wrong, we automatically want to get ‘even.’  By nature we respond in kind. In other words you should know when you call someone a nasty name or treat them nasty, you most likely will kindle the flame and find they will return the ‘favor’ by trying to be two times as nasty back.

If we want to ‘get along’ we must first learn diplomacy.  Actually the Golden Rule, set by our Lord, is truly that, good diplomacy.

 I had no problem finding an image of the one above I saw yesterday. I had to search more for this one (I knew there had to be a challenge to the above)

There are many who would not wear them, but say it and think it. This is not Christian it is senseless and not Diplomacy. It would be nice to have some true diplomats run for President of our Great Country. Someone who would put away ‘petty’ differences, name calling and pull us together.

When you allow no question or challenge to your word, what are you?

I have heard, "I didn't vote for a preacher or priest but president." I agree, but the leader should still be a Diplomat, we need some understanding and peace. He is the president of many different thoughts and cultures, and WE ALL must still  live together.

 As a former military man I cannot imagine anyone knowing Russian History (Stalin, etc), to stand by and smile at what is happening in the Ukraine. I am not mentally ready for USA boots on the ground, but I know if this continues WE will be involved!

 All of a sudden we have AMERICANS who believe conspiracy theories that the USA is somehow at fault, AMAZING!

 If you think Putin is cool, then smile, they just bombed another orphanage and more apartment buildings. Yeah I know that is just more fake news.  Russia is really the good guys (NOT)!!!

 Some thoughts for today:

I was wondering if you thought about the word I mentioned previous. I thought a few of you might remember the word, ‘chad.’  It made the news many years ago in the presidential race between Bush and Gore.

You might remember the election headlines 2020:

HANGING CHADS, RECOUNT AND CONFUSION

For your information:

This is an IBM card, there was a period of time the world centered on the IBM Corp and its famous Card. Most businesses and Government paid by check which was an IBM card. All Government bonds were on IBM cards. Many places we worked used the IBM card for time cards. And Florida  used them in elections for ballots.

The card has 80 columns, each column has 12 positions. Combinations of these punches can easily be read by we who know the codes. For instance an ‘A’ is a 12-1 punch in a column, etc.

There were also colored top cards, left corner cuts, right corner cuts and no corner cut cards to further define the card. In business the card was punched then passed to a verifier who uses the source document to re-key  & verify the card. The verifying machine cut an ‘OK’ notch on the 80 end to show it has been verified.

 The small punched chip is called a chad. They go into a chad box in the key punch machine.

 The catch was IBM made cards with all the holes pre-cut 98% thru the card.  This allowed for a human to hand punch the card using a punch, there in lay the problem, not all the punches were pushed out, half punch you could say leaving the ‘hanging chad’; so some votes were not counted properly.

 

Personally I believe MOST people who work our polls are good honest people just like you and I. I know they want their candidate to win, but also want an honest count. I trust them.

 

The punched card ballot was a good idea in theory, but it was not good in practice. TOO many voters had no idea that not pushing the stylus all the way would cause a problem.

 

In searching the word 'chad', I learned a lot. Most about the country of Chad. Then there was a UK slang term, I will not discuss here. ;-O.

 YES, there was a time IBM was king of the electronic world. Management never saw the demise of the card until too late. (One of those things TOO BIG TO FAIL). There was a ‘secret’ IBM plan to make an even ‘smaller card’. A former shipmate working for IBM research, was assisting in its development.

News and occupations, TWO-FACED

We are all familiar with the term 'two-faced' have even known one or two people like that. They are not limited to the USA.

Authorities have arrested 108 people, including alleged child sexual predators and those seeking prostitutes, in a six-day undercover human trafficking operation in Florida. Among those taken into custody were four Disney employees and a retired judge, police said. 

EVERY occupation could be the basis of a great TV series or movie. Remember Taxi, Home improvement, Mash, Beulah, Police stories, etc.  I am sure you can think back and in most jobs you have held there was comedy, romance and tragedy.  It takes a master though, to put that into words and drama and come up with a hit series.

Both our sons have fantastic families. The grands have done well in life and make a granddaddy happy. Their variety gives spice to our lives.

I look back at my life and it is sorta like the cobbler or blacksmiths. Jobs I have held are practically gone now, or changed so much they would not be recognized.  I was thinking of something my girl said yesterday. She was talking about ‘politics’ in an office. At one time she was the front runner for a job, one she was already filling temporarily.  BUT someone who knew someone got the job. She said, “You know, I was going to leave my job and take one as a ‘keypunch’ operator.

The word ‘Keypunch’ is an antique word now. Most people would have no idea what it means.  Some of you do, some have actually punched cards (or used them) and even know what a ‘chad’ or chad box is. LOL

Now back to the opening. A story like that has a lot of back ground and investigation. It is ‘simply’ the results of men and women doing their jobs.  The fact that they ran into a former Judge breaking the law grates against my nerves. To think this man actually ‘sentenced’ people to fines and jail for doing exactly whatever it was he was doing.

To be honest with the judge, I have no idea (from the article) if he was actually dealing in human trafficking or soliciting prostitution. BUT he was breaking laws he had once enforced. That rubs one the wrong way!

Every Occupation has ‘TWO-FACED’ people. The ones that bother me most are law enforcement and religious zealots.

 Some thoughts for today:

When we go thru an area that has a specialty food and get a chance I like to try it. BBQ is one style of cooking that has ‘local’ ideas and recipes.  I know it is an opinion, but NC has some of the best in the world. It is what you get used to.

I have tried BBQ in most areas we travel. Overall I certainly prefer NC BBQ. The Red Pig in Concord, NC and Bridges BBQ, in Shelby, NC have some of the best.

BUT something VERY unique to our area of NC is livermush.  We love it. Many turn their nose up at the sound of liver. Livermush was originally a ‘poor folks’ dish.  It actually does not taste like liver. When packaged it is ready to eat. But it can be sliced and fried for breakfast and/or sandwiches.  It is good for a snack or a meal.

A funny line from Stephen (One of Jack Jr’s twins) When he moved to Knoxville to manage a music store. He called his dad and said, “We have moved to a foreign country, they have never heard of livermush here!”

It is made from ‘scrap meat from the hog including the liver and much of the hog head. It uses corn meal and spices. We really do like it.

My BIL Dick who knew Mr. Hunter out of Marion NC told me this story. Mr Hunter worked in the furniture factories around Marion. His wife made Livermush and he sold it on the side. Finally the business become so big he quit the factory and started a Livermush business.  It was a great success.

When it grew to where he needed a machine to weigh, price and package it. A company was located by his wife, and he took his first plane ride, to Chicago wearing his Bib overalls.

He was picked up at the airport, toured the company then sat down to discuss what he needed. They could do it but they needed a $5000 check to bind the deal.

“I don’t have a $5000 check,” Mr Hunter said. Before he could continue the man said.

As he stood, “Mr Hunter I am sorry we cannot do business. We need the check and without it you have wasted your time, I am truly sorry.”

Flabbergasted, Mr Hunter asked, “You mean in this big city y’all don’t take cash?”

It was the manager’s time to squirm, “Mr. Hunter you mean you have flown into Chicago with $5000 in cash?”

“Well I have a little more than that for expenses, but yes. Is that a problem?”

Of course it wasn’t a problem. We do like his livermush!

For today: Mr. Kleenex had a good PR man/woman they even fit in the car!

Around my house we have Tissue, both facial and toilet! Okay even in church, since we have folks who go to the altar and some cry; RIGHT THERE is a box of ‘facial tissue!’  Now a roll of good quality toilet tissue would do the same job, but would not be appreciated.

       

 

I carry a handkerchief. I had to laugh at the situations Victor mentioned in his blog concerning movies. When a lady cries, the male actor will always hand her a freshly washed and ironed handkerchief (It is never a used one!); BUT she never returns it.

There was a time you ladies carried a handkerchief, why did you quit?  Now you must carry a tissue in your purse and I would bet (like our motor home) you have some boxes of tissues sitting around.

What ever happened to the dainty ‘handkerchief’ a lady carried?  (Don't y'all want to save the planet?)  ;-)

Whether it meant anything or not, my 7^th grade teacher recommended every one carry a handkerchief. Use it to sneeze and to blow your nose in. BUT added, advise your mama to wash all the family handkerchiefs separate from the rest of the clothes to prevent spreading ‘germs.’  Now my mama had enough to do on Monday’s wash days with coloreds and whites without running an extra load thru the machine and the wringer, so I kept my mouth shut.  I figured the germs would be drowned, or squeezed to death in the wringers.

BUT someone has been great in sales ads at replacing the versatile ‘hanky’ with a flimsy disposable tissue. LOL

BESIDES all those actresses should have had their own hanky instead of stealing the leading man’s.

After reading this, my sweetheart will tell me, it is none of my business where she blows her nose as long as she doesn’t use my hanky! 

Last word before I get hit! (I still think a girl should have a hanky!)

 Some thoughts for today:

One of our best friends (now 93 years young) played a part of a pencil sales person in a skit at a seniors meeting.

She was asked, “Are the pencils New?”

“Some is, Some ain’t!”  Was the answer to most of the questions in the skit.

That little line by a sweet old lady had been bouncing around in my head considering ‘good days’:  My brain is saying, “Some is, Some ain’t!” 

I have contracted to have the slab for the RV poured and finished. To tell the truth I get ‘antsy’ working with someone I do not know. Not only that, but the weather has turned very ‘bad’, we have had torrential rains, and now tornado warnings. ALL delaying the contractor. I KNOW about these things, faced them many times myself, I understand…….. BUT…… I don’t even know this guy…….

BUT there was a GOOD DAY, son Jack arrived from his 4 month trip around the country. (Yep I guess it is in the blood).

With this trip he has now traveled the west coast from N to S and S to N. He cannot get used to seeing all the growing fields in California. And YES they are impressive. Thousands and thousands of acres of nut trees, citrus trees, vegies of all kinds, WITH grapes and a variety of fruits. He cannot get away from the craziness in the news from the coastal cities here and the beauty and peace in the state away from the coast.

So it was a GOOD DAY to have him back and hear of his adventures and his scattered family.

So about those days, any bad? “Some is, Some ain’t!”

For today:

I have read literally hundreds of books since I started reading seriously when I was nearly 60. I started when on a mission to ‘retrieve’ a grandson. I figured I would be alone for months. Our daughter in Law Carol had taken our first Grandson across the USA, and I meant to retrieve him legally.

While shopping I passed a stack of books, this one was Clancy’s, “Executive Orders”, 2 inches thick, hardback, $20. I figured it would take me months to read it. I read it in a week and was hooked. The mission did take a good while, BUT I helped son Jack get custody. LONG story.

This is about books, lines or quotes by writers that stick with you. I have read 3 by Hemmingway. I have no idea if he was a believer or atheist, but he was a good writer.

In the book, “For Whom The Bell Tolls” I am sure I read the line I am writing about. I just found the book on line and scanned thru it  did not find the location. I could have easily missed it this time, but it was a conversation between one of the old French Resistant’s and a spy. He was telling the spy who had come to help dynamite a bridge, about his life. He told of seeing his family killed by the Nazi. His home burned and other friends killed.

The spy asked, “Do your pray?”

“No more,” the man said with his head lowered, “Because God is gone, and I miss Him!”

I was so wrapped up in the book, reading the destruction and warped actions of the occupying Nazi Army, when I read that line, “God is gone, and I miss him!” I could mentally relate to the feelings he was expressing, in the writer's mind (I still get tears thinking or telling it).

I am not saying it was ‘spiritually’ inspired, but the writer did as he was supposed to do, he had me right there with those underground resistant’s I could feel the despair.

So that line has stuck with me for over 20 years. I am not sure one can feel it, unless they are at that point in the book. But it got me.

Has any writer hit you with a line you cannot forget?

I’m OLD, I get confused,have questions....

 Some thoughts for today:

Having dealt with family problems associated with illegal drugs, I was hurt, shocked to see that several of our Cadets from West Point were involved in over doses here in Florida. TWo in veryserious condition still. A terrible sign of the times. There was a time when we had the cream of the crop attending our military academies.  Young men and women with their heads on straight, desiring to assist in leading our countries military. Most of our officers got where they are because of what they know and produce, a few got there because of political connections (Like any organization or business).

Don’t get me wrong, I am not completely ignorant of past sins of cadets. The deadly drug thing is much beyond, it is  gambling with one's life. It definitely shows a lack of real knowledge of drug use/abuse.

I mentioned this in another entry called ‘Collateral Damage.’  Most applicants truly work to get into the Academies. There are senators and congressmen who stick their necks out and recommend candidates. Many are from well-known families in Towns and Cities.  When the names are released I KNOW families will suffer.

As an old guy, I also wonder about organized sports down to the 4 yr olds. I feel for parents whose life is spent delivering and picking up kids after working the 8 hour day and 40 hour week. And especially the single parents who must do most of it…..

Cars?  Notice how many cars are required in a family today?  We all know how expensive insurance is especially for 16-19 year olds. Hey, and the parking space required at the new homes. Funny that, when I was building I thought a double garage was the cat’s meow.

…….

Gas?  What is your standard practice about fill-ups? For most of my years when our gauges hit ½ it was time.  Now since I am OLD, if I am not careful, it will reach ‘E’xcitement.  I do have to change that because the prices are climbing pretty fast, so I am going to try to keep it near the ‘F’un.

When I worked at a service station I heard, “Gimme  a dollars’ worth,”  I didn’t hear “Fill ‘er UP, too often, and gas was 29 cents a gallon!”
