We are getting married “NEXT WEEKEND” (Next weekend seems to never come)

Dallas and I continued to make plans.  Unknown to me, my best friend was visiting Sherry, trying to talk her out of the marriage, because he thought I wasn’t ready!  I don’t think that delayed the marriage. It did put some doubt in Sherry’s mind about how my parents felt. So, Sherry had a long talk with my mama, and learned they were very happy she was coming into the family. After that things came into place.

For weeks something happened to prevent the marriage.  Not fussing, just ‘things’ prevented the ‘happening’. AND THEN on one Short weekend, I arrived home around 5PM on Saturday and learned THIS WAS THE WEEKEND FOR SURE! There was a wedding cake and everything. The wedding party was also arranged,  family and close friends.

The USMC has many dress uniforms, the most recognized is called Dress Blues. I packed them every weekend to wear for the wedding. So I rushed to get dressed. We were in front of Justice Nunn at 7:25PM, in York, SC..

Someone laughed When he asked me if I took Sherry for my lawful wedded wife, and I said “Yes SIR”. (Not “I do” for this Jar Head.)  Sherry followed suit with a ‘Yes Sir’, so on September 22, 1956 we were married..

Then back home to the church parsonage. I am a happy guy!

We had a small celebration, mama arranged for pictures.  Everyone was happy.  Dad loaned us his Rambler and he drove my Chevy (which I had wrecked on the drivers side on the way home, have I mentioned  my good driving ?)  Yeah, she still married me. I am one lucky dude!

Here we are the day after our one night honeymoon at Lake Lure, NC

To be honest it was after noon and we went into THE restaurant and ordered breakfast.  That wasn’t done that often in 1956.  I said THE Restaurant, because many years later ‘Dirty Dancing’ was filmed there.

A slow drive back to Belmont, an evening of loving at Sherry’s house, then time for me to head back to the base. I was floating on air.
LIFE WAS PERFECT.  Time to really plan to get into that base trailer park.

Thanks for coming this way.

There have been times in my life I dotted the i’s and crossed the t’s, kept my mouth shut and done something RIGHT!

What a wonderful love story. Good things come to those that wait. Seems you didn't rush into this wedding and everything was planned correctly and the right time was the right time. Congrats.

I do love happily ever afters and that is what you and Sherry have. I loved seeing your wedding pictures!

I second "MA's" sentiment about happily ever after.
It also gave me the warm fuzzies to read about Sherry talking it over with your mother. That was sweet.

You looked so handsome in your dressed blues! And, your beautiful blushing bride by your side... what a beautiful picture to treasure.

Hugs to my favorite couple.

Your love story is sweet. I'm glad you got your girl.

«Louis» continues to enjoy the story of your life with Sherry. :-)

In the post below, you have that photo of Khrushchev. «Louis» remembers him banging his shoe on the table and saying he would bury us. Little did he - or we - know that Obama would do the job for him!

I love reading how it all came together and how you two finally got married! Not months of preparation like brides/grooms these days, but still a joyous occasion! Once can just see the love and happiness looking at your wedding pictures!
