Death and other Important stuff

 Memorable Automobiles from The Past:

1954 Olds Rocket Concept, many features were used in the 55-58s.

For today:

In my lifetime I have read and heard about CRAZY things related to religion. I have always been affiliated with the Christian religion. That is all I knew growing up. I have known some very good folks and some terrible ones who said they were Christians. To tell the truth I have met more ‘Christians’ who would give you the shirt off their back and those who would take it!  LOL

I firmly believe the USA was founded on Christian Principles. I realize completely that anyone can be WRONG, but what can be wrong with having Christian ‘Standards’ even if you are an atheist. Basically it is about law and order and treating everyone right. I cannot see the problem, but then I was raised under the Christian flag.

Beliefs can certainly get twisted, Remember Jim Jones?  OUCH!

And then there was a popular ‘teaching’ in the past 50 years, that God wants you to be wealthy, he wants the BEST for you. I think those thoughts came from the ‘Name it and Claim it Group.’ My logic questions that belief. Some of the best Christians I have known have been poor as the church mouse, still giving to the Christian cause and living ‘hand to mouth.’  If anyone deserved ‘comforts’ it was those folk. (Like the lady in the scripture giving pennies!)

Then the belief that sickness is NOT REAL, it is all in your mind. I’m reminded of my Dad again. One of his tales:

A Kid comes running into his house from School, “Hey dad, you know that lady up the street who had been sick a long time?”

“SON! You mean that lady up the street who thinks she is sink!” Dad corrects.

“Yeah that's her. She thinks she is dead now, there is a hearse up at her house!” ..............

And for your smiling pleasure:

Bill to his friend, “I have been trying to sell my car and just cannot get any lookers, not even a call!”

Friend, “How many miles on that sucker?”

Bill, “255,000 or right at it.”

Friend, “My brother can run that odometer back to 35 or 40,000 and make the chances better.”

Friend sees Bill weeks later after the odometer change and he is still driving the old car. ”Hey Bill, it still won’t sell?”

Bill, “I decided to take it off the market, I can’t get rid of a car with only 37,500 miles on it!”…………….

Moral of the story: Something's can be ‘Only In your mind’.

I have the answer

Memorable car of the day:

1954 Ford La Tosco , never in production.

For today:

I remember a line from a Bob Newhart show.  He was the psychologist I think. A patient was explaining that a problem she had running around in her head and she could not control it. It was worrying her to death.  He looked at her very concerned and said, “Stop it!”

I have found it easy to solve the other guy’s problems. Mine? That is a different story they are just too complicated for others to understand. LOL

In reality when I look around me and see some of the things others are suffering thru, I must laugh at my own set of ‘worries’.

I have said it a lot, as a matter of fact I said it again today to Son Jack; there are times I think I am HIS favorite. Of course I know that is not a valid statement, but God had been so good to Sherry & I personally, I am so blessed. Shucks, We are 4 days from our 65th Wedding anniversary.

We have never required much. We could have afforded a nice house with payments, but opted for much less. I smiled earlier today when I ran across the picture of a house we moved into. It was dilapidated and we had two boys. There was no indoor plumbing. It had a kerosene stove for heat. The boys like to think of that now, they can say they lived in a house with an outhouse.

We have grown from trailers to nice homes, but that was strictly management and hard work.  What I am so thankful for is our health. I have spent the day in a hospital due to snake and dog bites, but never overnight. Sherry has been in overnight giving birth, but not for a serious illness.

So I just want to say in Writing, I thank HIM every day for his Blessings.  No one knows what tomorrow holds, but for now, I am HIS pet.

I am smiling, I guess ‘pet’ is colloquial, down here if one kid seemed to be treated better than others at home or in school they were Daddy’s pet (my sister Shirley) or teacher’s pet, ME! LOL

Do you ever feel like you are observing, but not here?

 Car of the day:

1953 Caddy Ghia Coupe  Concept, never produced..

For today:

I did make my little speech about our life in the motorhome at the Senior meeting.

Okay, the meeting was not the usual. It was extended by a business meeting and a long devotional read by one of our members who did not know about the business part either.  Not a big deal, but as I sat there with ‘my notes’, I kept cutting something out.

It gets dark a little too soon for many of the older folk who do not like to drive after dark, I am one of those. LOL

Anyway everyone seemed to get a kick out of the stories especially these:

Everyone loved the stories about me getting lost. My ‘code name’ was ‘wrong way jack’. Driving in Texas and other mid-west states it was ‘U-Turn Jack’ because there was room to do a U=Turn of the 60’ rig. I have driven 100 miles in the wrong direction.

We decided to take a trip starting from our driveway and flip a coin at the major intersections. Heads-Right, Tails-Left. Thirty minutes later we were driving back by our home. LOL (true)

Then we once took a very small road over a mountain with no guard rails to avoid a mud slide in California. We ended up on an Army Tank practice range (Ft, Hunter Liggett) almost surrounded by maneuvering LIVE USA tanks. The Officer in charge drove over to us in a Jeep asking what we were doing there…… We were escorted off the base. The Gate MPs got a good laugh as we drove out.

We did have a good time but the meeting ran too late in the evening for many. Anyway it was much better than the last time Doris asked me to help her. She did not tell me what I was supposed to be doing in a skit she had prepared. As they were putting stuff on me I asked, ‘Do I had any lines?’ Doris said don’t worry they will be laughing too hard. The last part of my costume was a DRESS they slid over my head, I knew I was in trouble, I ended up being a pregnant man.

Old People have a twisted sense of humor.

PS:  Doris told me after the pregnant man, “I knew I could trust you to have a sense of humor!”  I still get questions, “Was it a boy or girl?”  LOL

Is it true, are there TRUISMS?

Car of the day:

For today:

I am not consistent in keeping a clean car, BUT AFTER cleaning the car, I am consistent in saying: I AM GOING TO DO THIS REGULARLY! Now please don’t accuse me of lying, I think ‘I really mean it.’ Yesterday I not only washed the car, but for me I ‘DETAILED’ it. I think that is a new way of saying “I really cleaned it WELL!”

I mean I removed the rugs, vacuumed them and UNDER them. Dusted and cleaned the instruments and little crevasses. Actually removed the stuff that had fallen beside the console, and vacuumed there. I cleaned where the doors open and close, ends and under. I put that Armour-all stuff on the tires, boy do they shine.

The Honda CRV that Shirley left us looks NEW. I stood back after drying the outside and said, “I am going to keep it like this!” (AGAIN)

I refuse to pay a car wash when I am doing NOTHING myself, I need the exercise, I say. My family says I am really, “Just cheap.”

We drove the car to church last night. NO ONE bragged on our car, and it looked fantastic! BUT now I ask you, “IS IT TRUE?”

The sun was shining and the sky clear when I did the deed. I was thinking as I washed the car, “Is this like doing a RAIN DANCE??”

Well today the car is still good, but outside it is raining. Did I cause this? I might just leave it in the garage until the roads dry and the sun shines. LOL

Truisms:

Wash the car, it is gonna rain.

Drop a slice of bread with p-nut butter on it the P-nut side is DOWN.

Take the umbrella and it won’t rain. (don’t take it and you might just end up buying one at Cracker Barrel.

What are other truisms you have proven?

Dopey, Sneezy, Sleepy, Bashful, Grumpy, Happy and Doc

Memorable car of the day:

This is not our neighbor Todd but comparative.
Modifications for 'short people to drive trucks'.

For today:

Until today I did not know that ‘Dwarfism’ was a medical term. I also learned that Midget is considered a nasty word.

To tell the truth I don’t remember a lot about the 7 Dwarfs. It is probably not politically correct anyway. I have never seen myself as anyone of these, but I THOUGHT: HEY the descriptive names are all of us, i.e. every human. Most of us have been all of those names at one time or the other. I honestly had to look up their names to make sure of them.  Dopey, Sneezy, Sleepy, Bashful, Grumpy, Happy and Doc

Lately I have sure felt like old Dopey, Sneezy and Grumpy!

The story popped into my mind thinking of the ‘Nasty Lady who wanted to be the FAIREST OF THEM ALL!

Many women in the entertainment world compete to gain attention in how they dress or don’t dress. I smile at one of those laws I read in NC required all women to be dressed in a dress of at least 16 yards, if I remember right. Some now attend gala events in an outfit that has less than a ½ hanky in cloth.

Now granted the camera and most men will ogle such a woman, but they are definitely not looking at the outfit design. NOR would MOST married men accompany their wives in such dress. :-O

When I see the competition between the ladies of our entertainment society, I think they all want to be, “The fairest of the Land”. After seeing some of the costumes chosen by some women I wonder if they really think ‘naked’ will make them the fairest!

Anyway, I have always liked the 7 Dwarfs and the whole idea of fairy tales.

That aside you must admire the ones affected by Dwarfism and their ability to work and live in our society. Our neighbor Todd is about 40” tall and about 30 yrs old. He has the best of personalities. He drives a BIG truck, I have never seen how the controls are set up, but he handles it with no problem.

Sweet feelings of LIFE

 Car of the day:

1951 Buick XP300 concept car, never produced. It was 4 more years before that rounded windshield was used.

For today:

There have been times WE ALL have said this is the funniest thing I ever heard. This is the BEST I have ever felt and I have said many times, “This is Great!”

I remember seeing a huge rock at the 'Garden Of The Gods,' weighing TONS, balanced in a spot of about 2 sqft.  It looked like I could have pushed it over. BUT I am sure that was tried many times by men and boys before it became protected in a nature preserve.

But what I am thinking about is like the feeling I had when chosen for a baseball team playing on an empty lot. I wasn’t the first chosen, but I did get picked (but not every time). Many times I watched and cheered with the other ‘not picked’ kids.

I thought about the above a couple days ago when I saw ‘Harold “Smokey” Woods’ again. Smokey as he was called is a local hall of famer and played pro ball for a while. One of the nicest guys you ever want to meet. He was picked first on those sand-lot teams, of course.

I remember sitting behind the steering wheel of my first car,  thinking, it just don’t get any better than this.

Graduating from USMC Boot Camp and the pride of being a Marine!! Yep they do a great job of ‘brain washing’ LOL. But I did (and still do) feel PRIDE in our country when saluting our FLAG.

I was separated from Sherry & the boys while awaiting housing for three months at an isolated duty station. One of the best feelings I can remember is seeing that girl step off that plane at Cuba’s Guantanamo Bay. We were together again.

There is a feeling of awe as you look down into 125’ of water a few miles out from Key West on your boat and see tropical fish and coral formations at the bottom, as clear as a bell.

Owning your first home.

Seeing your first mountain.

Walking in the Badlands.

Looking down in JUNE from 30,000 feet to see snowcapped mountains.

Viewing a night eruption of Mt. Vesuvius reflected in the Blue Mediterranean.

This could go on and on, BUT:

Something makes your heart LEAP when you ask a beautiful girl to marry you and she says “YES!”

And that thought of "SHE IS MINE" when asked by (Notary Public) Mr. Nunn, “Do you take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband.” AND SHE SAID “YES SIR!”

Some feelings in life are just fantastic!

Warranties and greetings

 Car of the day:

50's Merc concept car, not shown to the public until years later.

I think it would have made a hit.

For today:

I am glad that most companies offer warrantees on their products. I will definitely use a warranty if something fails due to a manufacturing defect, not my ignorance. I refuse to buy extended warranties, one reason I would probably forget that I have it. I can understand it if a person keeps good records and follow the time lines.  Extended warranties are like insurance. Someone is betting you won’t need it and you are betting you will. Normally the odds are in their favor or insurance companies would not be among the largest Corporations in the world.

Greetings and customs of this day. Due to the practice of shaking hands and hugging has diminished especially outside the family. Now I see fist bumps and forearm touches. I commented a few weeks ago to our pastor, seems odd for my pastor to greet me with a fist!

I still hug many of my friends who are comfortable with it. How has your greetings been effected with this stinking Virus hanging around?

Trying to be safe and careful, but none of this stuff can replace the feelings of a hug and handshake  JMHO !!!

I will never force a contact, some folks are deathly afraid, and many should be.

Music and Radio, Life before TV & the net

 Car of the day:

1924, Kelly's Motors in NSW, Australia, 1924 Graham Summit.  The first car known to have a radio. The radio actually cost about a fourth of the car value.

 For today:

I never knew anything about classical or ‘highbrow’ music, but I did love the Long Ranger. When I heard that music that brought his radio program on, I knew I would hear:

"Hi-Yo, Silver! A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust and a hearty 'Hi-Yo Silver ...

Yep, WE watched the Radio!!!

I had no idea the name nor writer, and at the time neither did I care, I knew only that the Lone Ranger and Tonto would solve someone’s problem today and give them a silver bullet. I knew also that they would say as the pair rode off into the sunset someone would ask, “Who was that Masked Man?

So one could imagine my thrill in band when we learned Antonio Rossini’s “William Tell Overture.”

I was raised on radio programs. The youth of today cannot imagine the role radio played in the lives of people who were raised during the period of 1920 to the 1950s.

Old Guglielmo Marconi made a BIG hit in the 20’s over in the UK when he created the first radio broadcast in June of 1920 Then in November the first Radio Broadcast was made in the USA. It became a sensation when men who made their living ‘telling stories’ learned that instead of theaters and meeting houses, they could talk into a microphone and tell their stories to thousands throughout a city; then quickly they could cover states and even the entire USA.

(The first car radio)

By the 1930s show groups made up syndicated programs and the excitement began. The Lone Ranger and Amos ‘n Andy were among the first.

The only Soap Opera I remember was MA Perkins. Kat lived in the woods and left the radio loud so she could hear MA outside and thruout the little two room house. So I heard it outside when I visited and played with her son Stoy.

Other than the Lone Ranger I listened to:

Our Miss Brooks, Most Wanted, Gunsmoke, If by a Stoke of Fate and Can You Top This.

I listened to Professional Boxing also. The announcers could call a fight so well you could almost see it.

The main thing Radio did was make folks use their imagination, in my opinion.
