Hard decision coming up concerning a Hard word.

I like corn bread and milk. As I grew up we called it sweet milk. Dad always liked cornbread and butter milk. He and mom also like cracklings in theirs.
I did learn to eat cornbread and buttermilk, but I never did like cracklins. I could eat cornbread and buttermilk every night for supper!
I even mix pinto beans into the cornbread and milk and like it. I also prefer chopped onions. However, I seldom eat cornbread and milk anymore because of the cholesterol . (I hate spelling that word).

I don’t eat crackers and milk anymore either, and that has been a favorite of mine since childhood. I like the soda crackers in the milk and soggy. Topping that off is a hunk of cheddar cheese and that was my super snack at night. I love eggs; I could eat three with grits and bacon every morning. BUT NO MORE! And it is just because of the nasty hard word, cholesterol.

I have to ask myself has the problem of cholesterol been around for years? If so, I have not been informed except the last 5-10 years. I bring this sorry subject up because in two weeks, on our next mail call, I will probably have my blood work results. I have been trying to keep my intake down. Now I am wondering what to do? Should I take the medicine I know the Dr. is going to prescribe? (If it is high)

The medicine was suggested a few years ago but I chose to try to lower it naturally. I hate chemicals and drugs. I know they are necessary in many cases. In the case of my best friend Sonny, he told me, ‘ Jack the only thing keeping me a live is my medicines, I hate ‘em, but they are life.’
Sonny had a multitude of things wrong with him, and was taking a handful of meds a day and the Drs. Worked long and hard to keep one from counteracting with the other. He and I figured they had added about ten years to his life, nothing to sneeze at. What is one day of life worth? You cannot put a price on it.
From all the tests I only expect a problem with the word I hate to spell. So I will soon have to decide again, should I keep trying?
Naturally today on the health news here on the net they have a study linking the cholesterol meds to liver and heart disease. SHOOT! I hate this decision. QUIT LAUGHING OUT THERE! It is a big deal to me. My theory has always been when they get you on one med, another will come soon thereafter. And once you are on them you are too afraid to stop. BECAUSE THEY JUST MIGHT BE RIGHT! Ha!

Thanks for reading this ranting,

PS:
Did you know that next to Warsaw , Chicago has the largest Polish population in the world.
PS2:
We do wash our cast iron. Do you wash your iron skillet? Many folk don't.
My BIL Sonny once bought a sand blaster. He was so proud of it, he sand blasted all of his wife's cast Iron. EVERYTHING LOOKED BRAND NEW, HUH UH! NOT ONE OF SONNY'S BRIGHTER MOVES.

dont wash the skillet. THAT WAS DAD'S ORDER TO THE ONES DOING THE DISHES WAY BACK THEN.
NEXT COOKING, HEAT THE SKILLET AND CLEAN OUT GOOD IF THE DOG HAS HAD NO OPPORTUNITY.
THAT CORNBREAD AND MILK STUFF IS FINE.
THEN THERE IS A BIG SKILLET OF IRISH POTATOS SLICED AND FRIED WITH LOTS OG BACON GREASE, ADD A HANDFUL OF CHOPPED ONIONS, SOME CRUMBLED CHEDDAR CHEESE, THREE OR FOUR EGGS BROKEN AND ADDED, SPRINKLE OF GARLIC POWDER, SALT AND PEPPER TO TASTE, TURN A TIME OR TWO UNTIL BROWNING NICELY.
SHOULD HAVE TOLD YOU, START WITH LARGE SIZE SKILLET, THEN WHEN FINISHED, EMPTY THAT SKILLET INTO THE WAITING LARGE BOWL AND WHILE SKILLET IS NICE AND HOT, MAKE THAT BROWN GRAVY THAT GOES SO WELL WITH POTATOS '
DEPENDING ON HOW MANY HUNGRY KIDS WERE AT THE TABLE SHARING THE POTATOS, BY THE TIME GRAVY IS DONE THERE MAY BE NO POTATOS TO BE SMOTHERED BY BROWN GRAVY.
NO WORRY, THE GRAVY WILL BE EATEN TOO. THAT'S THE WAY IT WAS BACK DURING MY REMEMBERED CHILDHOOD DAYS. sam

I like Sam's comment. I only use my iron skillet to cook cornbread and no I don't wash it, when I empty the cornbread I take a couple of paper towels and scrub it good. I only eat a small piece in buttermilk. I used to cut fresh tomatoes up in it or onions. I go to get blood work done tomorrow, one part of it is for that word that is hard to spell, and yes I started on meds for it about three months ago. Helen

Boil water in my castiron skillet....gets all the big chunks....then rinse it with hot water...let it air dry and spray it with cooking spray...and stay off the meds as longer a possible....before CityBoy's gastic bypass surgery he was on 15 different meds....some were to counteract the side effects of the others.....now he's down to one and lots of supplements...

Hang in there...you'll know what to do....Linda

Remember Buttermilk from back home in Germany, mostly enjoyed chilled during the summer months.
It was only today that I bought crackers, makes one think whether to eat them tomorrow or not. With regard to meds, well, have to admit that I am as well too afraid to visit many times a doctor, yet am the one reminding me wife to take hers.
Wishing you all a nice Tuesday.
p.s.: excuse for not leaving much a trace lately, a way too long story for this comment section. Yet didn't want to leave rather "bad wibes" that were currently felt.

You made me hungry just talking about all that good food. Why is it that for years people ate it with no problem...The thing is they probably had them and just didn't know it. I inherited one good thing from my parents and that is that I don't have that hard to spell word. I also eat pretty much what I please. The thing is I haven't had that blood work done in over 10 years so I am just going by the last results too. I'd say if you can control it naturally go for it. All those meds have side effects too. I don't take any thing but an occassional asprin and my vitamins when I remember. It is a hard decision.

If the doctor prescribes meds........trust me.....take them. That word you hate to spell is a very serious issue......I know....I have it along with other issues........

Be a good patient, take your meds and eat healthy. Go easy on the dairy.

Hi Jack and Sherry: Thanks for your concern. My moniter went out. I hate that word and trying to spell it too. you are correct in that when you start taking one medicine others follow.

We have to remember we have the word on both
sides of the family. That is the reason I
try to watch what I eat. But lately I have eaten
everything that is wrong. The people that I
socialize with don't seem to worry about the word. You want believe the meals they prepare. It is time to have mine checked. I will be surprised if mine is not out of sight.

I could eat cornbread every night too. I'm not much of a buttermilk fan unless it is in a recipe like buttermilk pancakes or coffee cake. My MIL always enjoys a glass of buttermilk, she says it calms her stomach.

I'm not much of a medication taker so I'd be on the fence about taking medicine for cholesterol. I would have to see the numbers before I would decide; good luck with your decision and I hope the numbers are good ones

You have got to quit flinging those cravings on me. I wash my skillet, then dry it good with paper towels. I take a med for cholesterol and a diuretic for blood pressure. I tried diet and it came down about 35 points but not enough. The doc told me it was hereditary and I could eat lettuce only and it would be high, not sure that's totally true, but for now I'll take the meds. Take care, Sheila

Before taking the meds, you may want a second opinion. But what if the 2nd opinion is worse than the first? ☺

I wash that skillet, but don't scratch it. Dry with a paper towel, then add canola oil before storing. I made a mistake once and took a brillo pad to the skillet. The result? Rust!

Sweet milk and crackers with cheese is my supper. So far, no major problems with the cholesterol. Buttermilk is good if you put three heaping teaspoons of sugar in each glass!!!

I hate that word as far as spelling. Mine has been good so far but my 22 years old dresser has it and they want her to take meds for it. It is genetic. If they tell you to take meds, you better do it if for no other reason as to let me know I am not the only old (did I say that) person who has to take meds that make me miserable. I can not stand buttermilk.

Just had to mention that I have 10 grandkids and 10 great grandkids. But I must admit at 80 short stints with them is enough. I love them dearly and love to hold the new babies till they cry, then back to mom.

My great-grandmother ate cornbread crumbled in her homemade buttermilk every night for supper, and she lived to be ninety. She was also still doing her wash in a big cast iron kettle in her back yard and churning her own butter. By-the-way, buttermilk is low fat. Go figure!

Carbs, my friend, are the evil temptress for me. And those same carbs, breads, noodles, rice, potatoes, are the bad ones...the good carbs are the veggies, fruits, nuts, raisins, you will get to know what is good for your 'cholesterol'. Eat lots more fish and chicken and less of the hard fat meats, like beef and pork. Stay away from the organ meats like liver, heart, tongue...killers for the 'bad word'. We both have it and if you Have to take meds, opt for Gemfibrosol, it works, and Fish oil, it works. The two brought our numbers down by half. You can say NO, to the meds but in our case, the fish oil was not enough until we learned to eat better. Heck, we still have a good steak once in awhile, but we are just more conscious as to what we eat. Yikes.

As for that cast iron skillet....I wash mine with hot water, NEVER and detergent, and reoil each time after I use it. Even the rusty pieces can be revitalized with salad or canola oil, heated in a 300 degree oven an hour, wiped clean with a paper towel and Waalaa, ready for another round of good eats. LOVE cornbread.....

Great entry and hang in there .... it will work out if it's meant to

That would depend on how high the cholesterol is. I hate taking my asthma meds, too, but I have to take them. I added Bromelain (made from pineapples) to my daily regimen and it seems to keep me from needing the oral steroids, at least. Research herbal remedies. Some of them are very effective.

Just had some crackers and even a beer. Please excuse me if the German dictation made things difficult and wrong to understand.
Having had a bit of a "struggle" with regard of words like jealousy and alike, I felt as if visiting I would transmit the bad vibes from me.
Always a joy to read what's going on in your neck of the wood.Hope you didn't understand anything wrong. Please have a nice Wednesday.
