Men and Women of my time (5)

Memorable Pictures from The Past:

From the LA times awhile back after a hurricane.  Not how you want to find your car (nor your boat of course)

For today:

In 1952 Dad pastored a Church in Valdese, NC. I mentioned before, it was a church filled with people who held their politics high. About half the people were Dems the other half Repubs. They were friends, Brothers and Sisters in Christ. They ribbed each other good naturally.

Stephenson against Ike, Eisenhower was elected as you know. I remember hearing “We need to end the “Korean Conflict!”. Also heard we needed a do nothing President so we elected Ike!  ;-) … I had heard also that ‘as soon as that General is in office he will extend this a war to WWIII.’  Well Ike did do something, He brought an end to the Korean War. HE also sponsored and signed the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 and we know it as the Interstate system.

He also: Sponsored & signed the Civil Rights Bill of 1957.

We did stay at peace during the Cold War. Oh YES, not to be Forgotten was the fact that he & his administration balanced the budget Three times.

TV was just becoming popular in lower income homes. I saw Senator Joseph McCarthy and I did not like him. As a kid I wished Ike had knocked the props out from under him.

PS:  Ike, quotes that ring:

…What counts is not necessarily the size of the dog in the fight - it's the size of the fight in the dog.

…An intellectual is a man who takes more words than necessary to tell more than he knows.

…If you want total security, go to prison. There you're fed, clothed, given medical care and so on. The only thing lacking... is freedom.

What would we do without the interstate highways. I've traveled a few and they do save time from traveling the back roads of the country. We are thankful for them. I do remember a time traveling down I71 and I was the only car a on the road now it's bumper to bumper most of the time. I think they caught on ! I didn't relalize it was thanks to Ike !

Wow, I didn't realize during Ike's term they had those many balanced budgets! The present politicians could learn a lesson or two from him I do believe!

I remember my parents liking Ike. 'Never knew he was responsible for the Interstate system. With that in mind, I'm scratching my head: Why are there interstates in Hawaii? (LOL - stole that from a TV commercial).
Happy Sunday!

We've been thinking of you and your lovely Sherry and pray you are both in good health. Take care of those brilliant minds. Love that Ike was responsible for the interstates. It's so much less crowded on our beloved country back roads of pristine scenery and slower pace.
loven'hugs from way up north where we are finally seeing bits of real spring thanks to a few drops of rain and warmer air. The snow is nearly gone.
