The missing tail piece

Today was another tough day for me to have fun. I am not good at working on my back and looking up, and there is a lot of that in plumbing. AT times I get a sick feeling. (something like a fertilizer that was touted a long time ago, Vertego or something like that)

I did offer Sherry a chance for a photo op under the sink but she refused. She worked at straightening the Bathroom. It looks good. (Photo’s tomorrow)

I thought this was going to be an easy install. There was  new kind of holder with the sink. They looked like they would be a breeze.  Anyone installing sinks can tell you there are many number of ways sinks are hung and they are all tough because of the tight area you have to work with.  the only easy sink is the Cast Iron sinks, but it takes two men and two women to lift them into the hole in the cabinets. The are surface mounted and their weight hold them in place.

Then under the house to attach the drain and water supply. I am using some old vinyl siding to slide under and out. All is attached but I worked over time (9:30) so the test for leaks will be tomorrow after church.

Son Jack, stopped by today, we had a desk out on the road to give away and he hauled it to Stephen and Jennifer's house. Steve needed a desk, not sure he needed on that heavy that sucker felt like lead. It used to be my office desk. Here he is bringing the rollers back. He and Stephen decided the next occupants of their apartment can own it. “They AIN’T moving it again!”

 

Oh, about the tail piece. Every kitchen sink has one or two tail pieces. They attach just below the basket in the sink. I started to finish the job and was missing the tail pieces. When I told Sherry I needed to go get a tail piece, of course she construed it to sound like something else (terms used in our youth), and of course decided to go with me and take pictures if necessary!

Sherry is ever the lady.

She will not go shopping with me with her work clothes on, so she lets me go alone sometimes.

This is what you see right now, when you walk in the door. Below you see what I bought today, the sink cabinet. We finished them natural since they are oak. And NO! I do  not have any pictures of Sherry painting, my hands are usually too sticky and dirty to handle the camera, and she doesn’t do selfies.(smile)

I was actually just lucky, I did not even think of the distance needed between the wall and that window for the cabinets. I only had to notch the edge of the counter top to get it to fit.

This is looking from that sink cabinet to the back corner. It is starting to look like living quarters. Those are a few of our picture albums.

This is looking back to the entry door, you see the other window and the oak table that will double as an eating table and computer table probably.

Back in the bathroom the walls and shelves are painted and the tops of the washer/dryer are Cluttered.

I did get the cheap accordion door hung for the closet, and you can see my OLD denim jacket.

Another look at the Bitchen, the combo Bedroom and kitchen. We are still not positive what to do with the head board. At first I thought it might be good behind the Futon (when we get it!).
Not as tired as before, but worn out from frustration. We painted the cabinets outside, and not too long after that a huge black cloud headed in. I sanded the first coat and applied the final coat before the wind came up and blew over a bookshelf cabinet about blew over the cabinets and we were rushing to get to Reece’s birthday party. We made it.
Tomorrow, we shop for the sink and fixtures, then try to hang the wall cabinets and plumb the sink. It should be a busy but productive day.

1975 Caprice

Sherry caught me……

Working.  Today everything came out of the new Studio Efficiency. Time to lay the carpet and do the wood trim work, base board and door/window trim.

First the window/door trim. I call it installing the 442 casing. That was the description when I was building. You can see it around the window beside my bald head.

Then the carpet, I just sold my Knee kicker on Crags list for $45, never going to need it again. So I stretched the carpet the old fashioned way with nails driven at an angle then bent toward the wall, it works on small areas like this.

This is the betchen (Bedroom/Kitchen). My dad was a firm believer in sweating. He was sure that was washing your body from the inside out!

Last in this room, installing the base board. Fortunately I still had a small nail gun that makes the job MUCH faster and easier.

Sherry says no one ever sees me working so she took pictures for this ‘ME’ feature. Notice the outlets are 4 feet high, makes the electrical cords all visible, but makes them easy for old folk to plug and un-plug.  When I first started building, we had the outlets down at the base board, and they climbed to about 16”, over the years.

Tomorrow Sherry  will paint the bathroom, I will reinstall Shelves. Hang the cheap accordion door at the closet and possibly pick up a kitchen cabinet.

I am still trying to catch up on blogs, but the system is STILL AS SLOW AS ‘CREAM RISING ON BUTTERMILK’, as my mama would say.

Painting mostly done….

Thanks for all the sympathy, it is not all that bad, I just like for folks to feel sorry for me. .

I am just getting down and up real slow.  I am petting the knee by limping some.  That gets sympathy too, but it doesn’t hurt if I pet it and let the left leg take up the slack.

The closet is finished, it is in the bathroom.

As you can see the bathroom door is now hung, this is leaving the bathroom.

Mudding is finished, This room is painted and the last plywood  floor is installed.

I used some of the foam spray in cracks stuff around the windows, you can see it oozing out. The trim is cut and ready to install in the morrow.

Things are moving well, but I am moving slow. LOL

The rest is a piece of cake.  Some electrical and trimming out the bathroom. I must go underneath and insulate the water pipes for the winters.  We have mild winters in NC but sometimes we get a ‘COLD SPELL’.

I guess I am just tired

I  am having troubles with the internet. Most of you know we use a the cell phone for internet connection.  WE are in a terrible place for reception.

 

I want to apologize to my Friend Sandie of the Chatty Crone. I was so glad to see her post and tried to comment but I had a problem and also the system kept dropping off line.

So if this posts (sounds like my friend Lucy) I will feel better.

I have been working too hard to ‘show off’ and have twisted my right knee, hurt my back and in many other ways have FELT OLD. LOL

Stuff

I have always thought we had less STUFF’ than most folk because we moved so much. But when push comes to shove (what ever that means) we have managed to do pretty well at holding onto STUFF.

Neither of our parents were the crystal, silver, fine china types, so we never were.  I take that back. My girl bought a silver set before we met, but we have used it very seldom so it has been stored.

While in GITMO at a yard sale, we bought some expensive German Crystal and a complete set of fine china at a great price. Shucks, we became classy all of a sudden. Funny how proud we were to own such expensive stuff and at present neither of us can think of the names of the STUFF. BUT there is it in boxes labeled ‘Crystal’ and ‘China’.

Sherry’s mama’s cedar chest is out there, and it is empty, so as we change storage areas, we will try to fit the china and crystal into it for safe keeping.  “Safe Keeping” HA! we are in our mid 70’s, I assume the boys with put all this ‘STUFF’ in a yard sale for pennies on the dollar.

I have a Lionel Train set. WHY?  heck if I know. I don’t think any of the family is interested in trains. I think I will ask some of the guys if they want the trains first, but I am thinking of putting it on Craigs List along with a Hunter’s tree stand I will never use.

Bowling balls? What good are they? We have 4 or 5 of them. I have a great desk and no office to put it in. But I guess I will keep it and the filing cabinets, back to another storage area.

Son Mark has been using the 8x10 storage  building but has emptied it to move into the 52’x8’ trailer we gave him. As they emptied the building they found BILLIONS or ants had taken up residence in their STUFF. Now our trash pile is growing in leaps and bounds. In his stuff he ran across 3 TV’s (not HD) and a brand new printer that is now 5 years old, but new and out of date. Amazing.

So as he moved the last of his STUFF out, he said, “Now you can put your stuff in there for 5 years, then throw it away. Save yourself some heartache and get rid of it now.”

Of course that makes sense, but will we listen, not really, so in the next few days I am building shelves and emptying the efficiency or (Studio Apartment’) to allow me to finish the building and get out of Dodge.

Speaking of storing, This is how I want to store our car!

Happy Father’s day

(I have a good picture of Sherry & Her Dad, but I cannot find it. This is here dad, Wiley Aaron Harris and our Sons (now fathers themselves) Jack (USN) and Mark (Kiss fan)

I received an interesting e-mail today  from another Sherry. It included a testimony of a young Policeman who is  a father. His biological father abandoned him and his mama when he was two. He vowed to never leave his family when he had one.

Once married, there was a near divorce but he was determined to make it work and he did, now with 4 kids, he is more determined than ever to make it last. It was a good Father’s day story.

He also quoted a story of a prison that offered free Mother’s day card to anyone who wanted to send a card to their mama. They had to get more cards the demand was so great.  Then come Father’s day someone had the bright idea to do the same for free Father’s day cards.  No prisoners wished to ‘wish their fathers a happy father’s day’. Many did not know their fathers.

So I consider it a compliment when my sons wish me a happy Father’s day.  I was very fortunate to be raised in a family with a wonderful father. Although I did tell him I loved and appreciated him, somehow I feel it was never enough. So to my daddy who 111 years ago was named after Frank James and Benjamin Franklin, Frank Benjamin Darnell, HAPPY FATHER’S DAY up in heaven. He is  probably still too enamored in Heaven to remember us here. But Daddy, you were loved.

Jargon

Every facet of life seems to have it’s on slang language, or jargon.  Our boys were into Moto-cross racing for a few years and found a new language, one was Whoop-dee-doos,  referring to several similar humps in the track.

When walking the Appalachian Trail, we learned even more:

Slack packing (Having someone haul your pack around a big mountain or two in a truck.)

Trail names: some are picked by the hiker, others just grow on  someone. We were the “Overland hermits”.

Thru Hiker: A hiker who will hike the entire 2176miles at one time. Usually 6 months of hiking.

Section Hiker: folks like us who started out as Thru Hikers, but could not finish in one year, but keep on going back to try to complete THE TRAIL.

Of course the list goes on.

Now all that is to show I am so engrossed in the building industry, I use terms that might not be understood. Sherry goes with me most of the time. Lately on our shopping trip I said, “I need to pick up a 30 inch Right hand door.”

“What do you mean Right hand?”

Then I explained that is how we describe how a door is hung. You put you back against the opening where the hinges will be. then pretend your arms are the door. If your right arm defines how you want the door will swing it is a Right hand door.  If your left arm shows the door will swing that way, it is a Left hand door.

I am writing this on Friday night. Today the rest of the studs went in and the drywall is hung, screwed and nailed. I also applied the first coat of mud on the nails and seams.

The one job you cannot rush is finishing the drywall. That reminds me of the time Son Mark and I took the roof off Shirl’s house and added a second floor. To keep the cost down, Shirl and Mark said they would be the Mudders (Drywall finishers). It actually looks easy and even looks like fun, but it is a skilled job and tough. I over heard Mark tell Shirl, “I’d steal before I would do this for a living!”

In my life time I have seen jobs that looked easy and like a dream job, but in reality they were tough. Funny how the other guys job looks like a gravy train compared to yours.  What is that old saying, “The grass is always greener…..”
