Waffle

Yesterday morning my girl suggested Waffles.  Well a Waffle at the Waffle House.  We always get a pecan waffle each, love them at the House.

waffle

The Waffle House is another place to people watch. We are normally satisfied with service and food.  We have completely given up on our waffle House in Wildwood. FL.  Bad service and TOO COLD!

I can never understand businesses that must pay the ‘overhead’ and run the A/C cold enough to keep meat. My girl carries a sweater no matter how hot it is outside, ‘just in case’.  The, just in case, is usually, ‘I need it’.

Speaking of service, I have mentioned it is our practice to go to McDonalds for coffee and share a jelly biscuit each Sunday Morning. There is a beautiful young girl now working the table area who wears a frown. Very unusual for McDonalds who declare they hire ‘smiles’. The first week I thought maybe she had a bad night but 2-3 week running and she looks as if she has a chip on her shoulder, or the work is beneath her.

That brings to mind work. WORK, I have never seen or had the job that I thought was beneath me. I also never look down on someone who is doing the menial tasks, someone must do them.

I was raised to give an honest days labor for a days pay.

That is today here in HOT NC.  But honestly I do not mind working out in it.  I am just glad to be alive and I know it is not permanent, it will pass.

We are looking  forward to pulling out in a week or so.

Thanks for reading this drivel.

Darnell’s Construction

I became a builder sort of off handed. I found a small lot with a shack on it, bought it and built a small house for fun. I borrowed the money to build it on a handshake. It was tough, and I learned a lot. That was one of several houses I sold that included a producing garden in the back yard. Sherry liked the little house and was convinced I could build.

002

On one of our evening walks she said the magic words. “Could we sell our house and  you build us a house and get us out of debt?”

“Sure.” Thinking, that will be simple.  We owed about $13,000 on our house in Paw Creek. The next day we started looking for a lot. And put our house up for sale.

We found a lot and using the profit from the small house, paid cash for the land. That house was built entirely by Sherry and I, except the heating and Air. We about gave up when we ran out of money and couldn’t borrow the small amount we needed to finish and our house did not sell..  But my brother in law Dick came to our rescue and borrowed the money for us.

My next to last office (All were in our home)

001

Again, this post comes about because yesterday I found a few hundred small 6” wood rulers, a couple hundred red pencils, key rings and a hundred balloons.  All labeled Darnell’s Const. Those things are over 20 years old and the balloons still hold air. We used them and house plans at a builders fair.

scan1991-92 037

(That is Jim (Shirl’s husband) he came over to represent Darnell’s Const.)

I have made at least 10 major occupational changes in about 60 years of working. I have been fairly happy in all my endeavors, but building was the charm. It was a job I never got tired of. It was something that made  me forget to stop for breaks and lunch. I loved the smell of wood and the feeling of accomplishment, being able to see a finished product.

The man Luke Tucker was my mentor. A sweet man, a man of even temperament, one who could correct you, without making you feel ‘stupid’. He was also my best friends dad (or he probably would not have hired me!)

After his retirement and after I had earned my General contractors license, He hired me to do an addition for him, the only stipulation was, I had to hire Wendy, his grand daughter, as my lead carpenter. I was proud to do it. Wendy was a hard worker and a great lady, she did not follow construction, but she did a ‘man’s’ work on that job. Love that girl.

Life has a lot of twists and turns, I admire anyone who knows at 15 years old, what they want to do and follow thru. Today at Lowes I was in line behind Dr. M. Murphy(ret). He was in Sherry’s class and knew he wanted to be a dentist in High school, and he did.

I joked with him a minute.  It must be nice to know what occupation you want, and enjoy it.

Dreaming

I have been sitting here watching my screen saver.  Sherry and I use ‘My Pictures’ as our screen savers. I get so many smiles, and good memories you would not believe. Family pops up, I have scanned a lot of my older stuff.

100_2626

100_2635

I get a kick out of remembering Mel & Dar and their families.  I kissed Darla thru a clear plastic mask she was wearing, Bill ‘weren’t’ looking. (Darla also cooked dinner for us! delicious!) LOL

017 - Copy025

One picture popped up of me wearing Slim’s Fur hat, I guess it is Coon skin.  And Mel and her Buck!

100_0902

You’d love Debbie & Gary, I have a picture of me showing Gary ( the Mechanic) my tool rack. LOL. Pictures pop up of the OK Corral.

scan2001-05 037scan2001-05 050

Oh yes, and  just up the road there is me with Rex Allen, I always thought he was cool with his hat more on the back of his head.

I can look across the table and see Sherry’s pictures also.  Anyone who eats dinner with us gets a free show of past picture collections. Many times we are asked, “Where (or WHO)  is that?

They pop up from Hawaii,at a luau to Alaska and Salmon fishing or panning for gold.

CRUISE FOR 7 days 054

What started this was a shot of Sherry relaxing on the bed reading on the cruise. I got to thinking, we are going on a cruise in December. YEAH! I got to dreaming of looking out over the ocean, I love Blue water. I told the Old Man on my last ship, if I could bring my wife aboard, I would stay in the Navy forever! (BUT I would make that a requirement. Been without her too many times.)

Some of my favorite pictures are of one of my favorite families, the Conrad's. We met these folk in Missouri in 1958/9.

conrads

All this from pictures. I can watch even when I am typing. Sherry’s computer keeps on going. The Mayflower, Sherry on the AT.

I see probably 36 states a day, hundreds of family and friends. Each shot brings back memories.

I love to dream. Someone asked me what was the worst trip you ever made? My answer, There has never been a bad trip. You can find something to love everywhere. Great people and God’s nature? Mountains, desert, oceans and Islands are all magnificent.

Seeing the snow covered mountains in the Yukon and Alaska or looking down thru clear water and seeing the  ocean bottom thru crystal clear water off shore reef at 125ft, 10 miles off Key West should thrill anyone.

God’s nature is good (Just dream a little dream)!

Treasures

Yesterday I ran across some treasures.  I am sort of a funny guy, I file things. When the grand kids came along and drew cute stuff, I started a file. I do not have it all, but I have something each one drew for me, or something they just done. they would come in my office and play. Sherece was always the secretary and artist.  She also arranged shows for the grand parents using the other kids and friends who might be spending the night.

The boys were artists or designers, and actors in Sherece’s plays. I did not make toy boxes for every one, but I did for Sherece, Corey and Ben, the oldest Grands. I still have Reece’s, it is now in the storage shed, and still full of toys they all used.

discoveries 005

Anyway I ran across some ‘Cards’ from the card classes (in church), These were small cards with a religious picture on it and a verse. Each student got to keep the ‘Card’. The SS teacher would teach about the card. I found a small envelope, mama’s writing on it:

“Jackie found this card on the ground in 1945, he brought it to me and was amazed that anyone would throw it away.”(She kept it, yeah, I also found some tears).

I knew I had a Gold watch somewhere, I found it. No band, but I shook it and it started running.

discoveries 002

I found 3 letters. One I had written my mama at the death of her brother Clyde. Two from Missionaries in the 1950’s. Rev. Herman Lauster from Germany and one from Rev Scuttie in Africa. My mother was a mission minded person. Bro. Lauster was imprisoned by the Nazi’s, she kept in contact, how, that is another story altogether.

I found several envelopes on which mama had written: For Jackie and Shirl, after school is out. $1.(1945).  What a sweet mama!

discoveries 001

Daddy had a little card in his wallet(when he passed away), I found it. It has a picture of a Black cat on it along with these words:

HEALTH TEST

Blow your breath on the Black Cat.

If the cat turns purple there is a harmful Chemical in your breath and you should see your doctor immediately. If the cat remains Black you are well enough to attend church Sunday.

I have had fun, and conjured up a lot of memories. there are still boxes to go thru.

Thanks for coming by the log.

What a beautiful day

Life is good. Today I am happy for my life, my health and my family.  Life has been a roller coaster with our sons.  Up and down, maybe a yo-yo.  It is hard to accept the fact you cannot change things in other peoples lives, even family.

My dad and mom were wonderful folks, but I would not listen to all their advice.  When you are 16-20 you are so smart, even an ‘ignorant’ teen ager has a mind, and though most cannot think a problem thru realistically, they do not know, until they try.  I guess it is like learning to walk, every living child has surely fallen at least once, but it did not cause them to stop trying.

I like to think I am mature enough in my 70’s to understand this, but I am not. I still want to fix a broken or ignorant life. I understand the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.  Therefore (unconscientiously only (LOL)) I am a nut case.

I catch myself trying to repair something that is broken, but ‘it’ doesn’t know that it is broke, maybe it does but doesn’t care.

I have mentioned that I tend to wear the keyboard #’ off my keyboard.  That is an example of knowing what causes it, but won’t change to fix it.  I type with the ends of my fingers, not the pads of the end digit.  I also tend to hit them hard, so my finger nails eat away the paint. yeah I know you never thought about that, huh?  LOL

But I am happy, at this stage (In the game of life) I am making a concerted effort to truly understand I cannot fix EVERYTHING. I remember once when my older son was going thru a terrible situation, I stood alone, crying like a baby and said out loud, I have always been able to fix ANYTHING and I cannot even help my son.

It is hard to face the fact we ARE LIMITED. I might gripe and fuss, but at the end of the day, I am, and always have been a happy positive person. Sherry once asked me what I would do if my ship would sink in the middle of the ocean. Without a second of doubt I replied, “I would swim home, grab something, but some how I would get back to you.”

Thanks for coming by the Log. BE POSITIVE!

Too many people are positive, (positive something is going to go wrong!!!)

DREAMER AND HIS DREAM

Seldom do I put a forward on my blog, but Glenda sent this to me, I love it…. If you have read about the chicken plucker, feel free to skip, thanks! jack

Let me tell you, Jesse hated this job. And you would too, I imagine, if you had to do it.

Jesse was a chicken plucker. That's right.
He stood on a line in a chicken factory and spent his days
Pulling the feathers off dead chickens so the rest of us Wouldn't have to.

It wasn't much of a job. But at the time, Jesse didn't think he was much of a person.

His father was a brute of a man. His dad was actually thought to be mentally ill And treated Jesse rough all of his life. Jesse's older brother wasn't much better. He was always picking on Jesse and beating him up.

Yes, Jesse grew up in a very rough home in West Virginia. Life was anything but easy. And he thought life didn't hold much hope for him. That's why he was standing in this chicken line,

Doing a job that darn few people wanted.
In addition to all the rough treatment at home, it seems
That Jesse was always sick.  Sometimes it was real Physical illness, but way too often it was all in his head.

He was a small child, skinny and meek.
That sure didn't help the situation any.
When he started to school, he was the object of every
Bully on the playground.
He was a hypochondriac of the first order.
For Jesse, tomorrow was not always something to be
Looked forward to.

But, he had dreams. He wanted to be a ventriloquist. He found books on ventriloquism. He practiced with Sock puppets and saved his hard earned dollars until He could get a real ventriloquist dummy.
When he got old enough, he joined the military.

And even though many of his hypochondriac symptoms persisted, the military did recognize his talents and Put him in the entertainment corps. That was when his world changed. He gained confidence.

He found that he had a talent for making people laugh, and laugh so hard they often had tears in their eyes.  Yes, little Jesse had found himself.

You know, folks, the history books are full of people
Who overcame a handicap to go on and make a success of themselves, but Jesse is one of the few I know of who didn't overcome it. Instead he used his paranoia to make a million dollars, and become one of the best-loved characters of all time in doing it!
Yes, that little paranoid hypochondriac, who transferred h

What is it all about?

I had a brother-in-law I dearly loved, and he was a fisherman. Many winters I fished with him 6 hours a day 5 days a week. I never tired of being around him. His wife, my sister Kat, also was great and I never tired of bring around her.

scan1996-97 0591

(Taken at one of our weekly fish fries at Lake Manatee, Dick front (r), Harry back (L).)

After the death of Dick (the BIL), I was talking to Harry, another fisherman buddy. I mentioned, I will sure miss the fishing days with Dick. harry made such an insightful statement, I never forgot it. He said, “Jack, you know, it was never about fishing!”. That statement hit me like a ton of bricks. he was absolutely right, it was Dick. Have you ever had the privilege of knowing someone that when they talked to you, you were the most important person in the world?  That was Dick.

So?  What is it (life) all about? When  you get down to the truth behind that, you have learned a lot.

From Hamlet, Shakespeare writes (conversation between Polonious and his son Laertes, as the later heads for Paris and the WORLD!):

Polonius:
This above all: to thine own self be true,
And it must follow, as the night the day,
Thou canst not then be false to any man.
Farewell, my blessing season this in thee!

Laertes:
Most humbly do I take my leave, my lord.(Son says leave me be dad,  I am gonna find what life is all about!)

Do you remember Dionne Warwick and Alfie?

What's it all about, Alfie?
Is it just for the moment we live?
What's it all about when you sort it out, Alfie?
Are we meant to take more than we give
or are we meant to be kind?
….. ….. …..
what will you lend on an old golden rule?
As sure as I believe there's a heaven above, Alfie,
I know there's something much more,
something even non-believers can believe in.
I believe in love, Alfie.

Without true love we just exist, Alfie.
Until you find the love you've missed you're nothing, Alfie.
When you walk let your heart lead the way
and you'll find love any day, Alfie, Alfie.

There are some silly things I enjoy thinking, I love to think some writers (both song and novels) are inspired to write some real TRUTHs at times!

I am writing this early Sunday morning, I just tucked my beautiful girl in bed. This is a time in our lives, when we can lean on each other. She is my rock and I hope, I am hers.I am the luckiest guy in the world. I am in love with my best friend and have been for over 56 years.  We tell each other, ‘it is you and me babe’, everyone else is gonna have to walk on their own hind legs.

Successful Yard sale…

Stayed up until after mid night last night placing things out.  Asked Sherry to get me up early, she got me up at 4:30. (Lucy was probably up!)

Yard sale 001

(Our first customers at 6:30, the guy in the yellow bought over $50 worth, he kept coming back)

Anyway We had coffee, Sherry had Yogurt and we started putting out the clothes and pricing the few things I had not priced.  I price to sell. About two hours into the sale I cut everything to 1/2 price.

Yard sale 002

(For laughs I started this off at $1.50 or best offer, finally when there were no takers I listed it free, still no takers. It is a perfectly good vanity top, it just would not fit our house.)

Craftsman tools at 10 & 25 cents each. Boxes of staples and paper clips at 10 cents.  I had tow bar parts. I gave a lot of electrical stuff to my nephew who came by. We sold books 10 for a dollar paperback and hardback. Home interiors stuff for 25 cents each, clothes for 25 cents.  At the end we gave away boxes and boxes. Take all you want free.

Yard sale 003

(My final offer, take anything Free)

Shirl came over early, and was a great help.  Sherry handled the money strings. We cleared close to $200 and gave away about that much. that is a lot of small stuffs. hahaha.

I advertised the tree stand, filing cabinets, and desk on Craig’s list. Get this….

E-mail: “If the filing cabs are still avail, I really need them”.

sales stuff 003

Yes!

e-mail: “

I have to leave on business to London, I need you to hold them a couple days, I will add $20 for your trouble. My assistant will cut the check in the morning and drop it in the mail priority. Once you get the check call and he will come and pick them up!”

Fine with me.

E-MAIL EARLY THIS MORNING:  “URGENT, URGENT! My assistant in a hurry to get you the check sent the wrong amount. MUCH larger, by a couple thousand. I am sure you are mature enough to know mistakes happen. I will trust you to deposit the check, and just return the remainder Western Union.”

Me: I think I can find another buyer, you stop payment on your check. Simple, not Urgent!

Strange I did not hear back from the SCAMMER.

But we had a great day meeting folks and dickering. hahaha. Sherry said folks gave me the strange looks when I would return 1/2 what they paid after I lowered the prices.

We had one small box left, Sink top (No one took it for free even), Desk, and filing cabinets.

Still expecting these to sell on Craigs list.

Squash, salmon patties and cornbread

Sherry is cooking, all I did was light the oven. I did tell her, she was not allowed to clean up, but she disobeyed Dr. jack’s orders and did clean up some.  I’ll let her slide.

Our Grandson Matthew Dillon, took a job in Maryland just after College was out for the Summer. Since we lived in Arlington and worked in the DC area for a couple years, I warned him about the traffic.  Warnings mean nothing, you have to experience 8 lanes of traffic STOPPED. You must learn to live in that big parking lot until it moves.  Anyway he is back, the traffic, cost of living and tops, missing his girl friend. I don’t blame him at all. You must like crowds and traffic to live there.

I looked as solemn as I could when he came out to give me a hug, I said to him, “have you had a chance to see THAT GIRL yet?”  then the grin went from ear to eat. (Me knowing that was the first place he went when he got home.  Yeah, I am old, but I can remember the first place I went when returning home, SHERRY’S HOUSE!)

Anyway Matt and his Girl-friend ate beans and Salmon patties with us, along with son Mark. Sherry is great in the kitchen (the rest of the house too, mind you), I have missed her cooking. Of course my meals are great, but you can eat chicken just so many ways.  hahahahahaha

However she was tired, she is getting strength back slowly.  We also went grocery shopping last night. She was beat.

I noticed Gas was $3.30 a gallon. Sure makes you mad when you find yourself thinking that is a good price.

Time is approaching for this Motor home to get underway. We will head for Tennessee a few days after the fourth. We plan to visit friends Fred & Frances, George & Donna and hopefully, Jack Darnell over in Coker Creek.

(Then off to Maine and some Lobsta)

Thanks for coming this way.

Wash day

I have been blessed with the job of washing clothes lately.  Sherry always keeps the clothes washed folded and put away. Since she brok a wing, I have been doing it.  I DO NOT MIND! here at Belmont it is nice to have the full size washer and dryer in the new storage building. It makes it easier.

The reason I am posting this is, I remember once, before we had a washer in our motor home, we used the laundry mat a lot.  It was a day our, usually Saturday morning. Anyway, at one site I watched a lady fold her wet clothes out of the washer, very meticulously.  Then, sit them inside a dryer carefully and turned it on.

I smiled inside.  BUT now about 15 years later I am reading about this little washer dryer combo we have, and in WRITING NO LESS they suggest folding your clothes before drying them. It is supposed to be a FACT that folding the clothes will actually eliminates wrinkles in the finished product.

Now I tried this, while Sherry laughed, And my drying came out like it was pressed. (that is a joke)

But do you do that? Or have you ever seen anyone do it?

I am just very curious.

Love from Belmont.

Yard Sale coming up

This Saturday is the big day for us. I have listed the yard sale on three internet sites.  I really do not know how many yard sellers look on the internet, I know I don’t.  I usually look for the sign in a neighborhood.  We have three main intersections here in the beautiful town of Belmont where folks look for yard sale ads. So I have made signs for those spots.  I will put them out some time Friday afternoon.

We went to three yard sales last week where nothing was priced.  With my hearing, I normally will not ask a price unless  it is something I REALLY am interested in. I am not sure how most folks feel about that, but to my thinking 99% of this stuff is priced.

I don’t mind dickering and even in most cases expect it. I have a couple things that are valuable, or I consider them so. Are you familiar with the ‘Leroy lettering Set’?  I have one. I am sure it sold for a few hundred dollars. Maybe I should put it on Craigslist.

Do you guys that go to yard, tag, garage sales have any particular way you like things laid out or presented?

We once bought 5 lbs of coffee beans, the only thing I had to grind them was the blender, they weren’t bad. lol. What is the most unique thing you have bought or seen at a yard sale?

Still putting this together.

Land For sale

We have been holding onto about 3 acres of wooded land in town. Thinking one day we might settle down and build a retirement home on it. After giving it some logical thought, we decided “We ain’t gonna build”. So Sunday afternoon, I put it on Craigslist for sale. by 10PM I had two inquiries. that was fast, maybe I listed it too low? Hahahahaha that always comes to mind when selling.

It is nice wooded land. But we honestly do not need it. I have about emptied the storage trailer, and by my estimation I was wrong when I had Sticky clear a spot and move it, I guessed it was on our property, it was not it is on our son Mark. We are giving him the trailer anyway, so that is no big deal.

Of course I have not told our neighbor (Son Mark) that we are thinking of selling, maybe I will tell him tomorrow.

As a builder, There is always a little disappointment in selling land, I was always looking to buy land. I have never sold land.  It is a mental thing that says,”Mister, you are through, you are not going to build anything else.” Then I tell myself, that is reality, live with it.

I have filing cabinets to move from the trailer. I hate to think of what is in them. Records of all the houses I have built. The subdivision plans, dreams that did not come to fruition. There is my office desk I need to move, where I spent many happy hours sitting in my office dreaming and planning.

Ever heard of a ‘Leroy Lettering Set’? I am selling mine in the yard sale. An amazing desk tool, I used it many times, now it is done with the touch of a keyboard. Today I ran across my High School GED from 1956, and my College Level GED from 1960, has it been that long?

Yes, it is time to hang it up. Sell the land. It would be nice to divide the money between the grand kids. I would rather see them enjoy it before we die.

Thanks for coming this way.

New Hampshire had ‘The old man of the Mountain’. The face fell off the Old man just before we got to that area hiking the Appalachian trail. so we did not get to see it.

Above is before, below is after with an overlay of what fell due to heavy rains that year.

Rocks fascinate me. I used to love to see the challenge of a tree and a rock. The tree can break the rock, but in the end the Rock survives.

Over the years water reforms rocks. There is a swirl basin not far from the Old Man where the water has cut a perfect swirl in a huge rock.

Traveling out west I was constantly amazed at the formations left by wind and water.

The above formations are in the Chiricahua Monument, AZ, not far from Tombstone.

Colorado to UTAH 083

It took a whole lot of years to cut this valley, heading West after crossing the Rockies.

Below are some from Moab, and the Arches.

Now is that a Sheep or what? That thing is at least 30 stories high.

Of course it is the Arches that draw us folks.

And the balanced rocks.

These things just fascinate me.

Thanks for looking at the formations again with me.
