Cousin Bobby

  Cars of history:

The Edsel was not here to stay. It was the wrong car for Ford to put onthe market. At the time a small Ford would have been better me thinks. It was a good car though.

For today:

For today:

A lot of this is repeat, but since I have it prepared here goes. Feel free to skip if you want to.

Bobby ‘n me were double kin. Yep, Mama’s nephew, Irvin O’Shields married Daddy’s sister Bertha. In our youth, Bobby and I were always close and favored. It was Always so much fun to visit Uncle Irvin and Aunt Bert. They had a country store and service station. They also farmed and raised cattle at times. We would spend at least a week together at the other’s house each year. They lived in the country outside Laurens, SC and we were always somewhere in NC.

(Me 'n Bobby (not McGee). Note we both wore neck ties. (We were at a funeral of course and shucks,  I had a hat but he still had hair)

In later life (i.e. above)  we met at funerals. Bobby passed away. Due to this Covid STUFF funerals are iffy. He was the last of his family.

Father O’Shields appeared briefly in my book ‘Rags.’ Bobby’s spirit matched my picture of a caring Priest. I also thought O’Shields was a fitting (priestly) name. Bobby nor I are Catholic, but part of my book involved The farm, at the Belmont Abbey.

I haven’t seen Bobby in a few years. I will miss him. Bobby was the last of his family.  As I get older there is a lot of that going around. Sherry and I are the last of our families.

Life is good. Bob is in a much better place. His suffering here on earth is past.

Nite Shipslog

PS:  The lighter teenage time:

1952 Shirley hanging Bobby, me and Guy Abee on the clothesline. Bobby's sister Mildred took the picture. Cousins being crazy

I could see a family resemblance between you, Jack, and Bobby! It is always hard to be the last of the family I do believe. Like I mentioned before, by mom, the youngest of 10, was the last living.

Your posts are always charming, I especially enjoy family history, the old photos and "Sherry" tales!!! It's hard to lose your favorites, having lost Mama and my "Other Mother" so close together left me with a broken heart. Knowing their together is good, but I still spill over with tears when those "memories" pop up on Facebook. As Mom would say "This, too shall pass.
As Daddy would say, "you are still full of piss and vinegar". You two have always taken care of yourselves. I look forward to at least a dozen more years of Shipslog post in my email! Warm hugs, Glenda

What a delight in your childhood, to have a cousin who's also a best pal! I know you're going to miss Bobby. That photo on the clothesline is hysterical! Remember the good times!

I always thought cousins were so fun! They were like siblings but didn't tattle on you and like best friends you can call kin.

Heading to the office

I heard it said that cousins are our first best friends. I can see this was true with you and Bobby. I'm sorry for your loss. It's one of the hardest parts of growing older...the many goodbyes. He looks like he was a wonderful guy and I'm glad you have such good memories of him to comfort you.

You have some wonderful memories of growing up with your cousin. I always like to think we never really lose those we love, because we keep them in our hearts forever.

So sorry you lost your best friend and cousin...the wonderful picture of the two of you amazed me of how you could have been twins. You do look a lot alike. We always miss them but the memories are yours forever. Mom and her sister 2 yrs. younger, are the last in her generation of their family. Mom is feeling the losses, but know the day will come she will be with the rest of them someday. Life on earth is short and bittersweet. I look forward to heaven, should I get there.
loven'hugs from up north where we've been visiting a couple hours away over the weekend. It's good to be back home.

Condolences to you for such a loss. WHat a wonderful friendship you had with your cousin and the resemblence so amazing. I have lost two wonderufl friends in the past 2 months, Sharon would have turned 66 next month and Jessica was 46. My hert is truly broken. My daughters friend lost her friend Shannon, 42 years old. Had been with her husband andy since middle school. Drs. could give no reason, even after her autopsy why she passed away. Healthy, young, in excellent shape. gone in the blink of an eye. My grandmother would say God always takes the good ones. My husband told me Marvelous Marvin Hagler passed away from the virus. He was 60ish. I think God is going to make a grand comeback and I suppose he is warning us. Life is so very hard, I pray harder and ask for prayers for Andy and his children. The loss of his wife and their mother is devastating because their are no answers.
