Bardstown, Kentucky

Sherry & Colette in front of our Overland Coach at Bardstown.

A few years ago we were looking around for places of interest within a weeks driving of our home.  I believe it was Sherry who remembered Lester Perry an old friend taking his family there on vacation. We were sorta chasing Lincoln’s life a little and decided to drop in and check out Bardstown, home of the song, “My old Kentucky Home”. WE wanted to see the plays but first you must tour the HOME and grounds of the home where Steven Foster penned the words and music to “My Old Kentucky Home”. Two of our favorite travelers were with us, Sherry’s sister Colette and husband Sonny.

A very good spot to visit and a low key destination place. There is  some very good outdoor entertainment there, a favorite thing of ours.

Kentucky's longest-running outdoor drama and official outdoor musical celebrates the life of renowned American composer, Stephen Foster. Colorful period costumes, energetic choreography and over 50 of Foster's most beloved and timeless classics, including Kentucky's official state song "My Old Kentucky Home”.

I could hear pretty well then, and the plays were great and the Stephen Foster Songs were refreshing.  A great outing….. There is more to do in Bardstown, but this is why we went.

Leaving here we went to the Sinking Spring, Birth place of Abe Lincoln. On the way we were behind this Grass/oat powered wagon. It is really a pleasure to go that slow sometime.

At the Sinking Spring Farm we found the replica of the birth home is enclosed here:

This birthplace home is inside the building above and leaving that building we descended these steps, down to :abraham-lincoln-birthplace

These steps that lead down To the sinking spring below:

We visited more places on this trip, but I enjoyed these very much.

Each day, each trip has been a thrill.

PS:

It is not unusual for a man of wealth to become famous i.e. George Washington, Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, JFK, Hoover, Thomas Jefferson, etc.  But I admire someone who can make it through adversity and humble beginnings. Whether I like their politics or not, I have to admire them.

Is it Kentucky where those people can not drink or use the water except for flushing? It looks like a lovely place to visit. Nor where the water smells like bad licorice but where you were.

I think THAT water problem Lucy mentioned was in W.VA. Stephen Foster's songs and Abraham Lincoln are well admired by me so that is one place I'd enjoy visiting. The sun has decided to pay us a visit today. Hope you all are enjoying the same. Have a wonderful Sunday!

Lincoln is my favorite president so it was interesting to read this. Like the little house.

You have the best memory of things Jack and it seems that you have a picture for everything you have ever done - and how do you get them so organized? You have had a fun and interesting life. sandie

In 1956, Lincoln produced what many («Louis» included) think is their finest design up until the 1961 Continental. For 1957, they grafted styling cues from the Futura show car (which later became the first Batmobile) onto it. The design has never appealed to «Louis». That 2014 Lincoln shares its platform with the current Volvo S60 and the current Jaguar XF. The development of that platform was begun when Ford still owned both Volvo and Jaguar.

I love the song My old Kentucky home all were good. Like seeing the
beautiful buildings. Looks like
a great place to visit.

Do not like the new Lincolns. They
look like every other car. I wonder
if the SUV's look better. Maybe I
will go and take a look. My car
is almost 5 year old. Will let
you know,

Wow that took me way back. My parents took me there as a child. I think there was a distillery there also that they toured. We did go to My Old KY home and the other places look familiar to me as well. I remember pics taken on those steps. Mom bought some figurines in Bardstown and the other day I saw them as we had to move them and the table they were on, over to make room for the Christmas tree and said "hey I remember that trip"! Love those old Songs too.
