And then there was Halloween…

Cars of beauty and art:
 Darla's Pumpkin Pickup

Now:
Sherry and I were out at the house and ready. We played dominoes and watched the clock. The sidewalk pole light and porch light were on.  We actually watched TV.  After over an hour of it, I still wonder why I ever watched TV.
We had no little Witches or Goblins show up, so we have candy for whoever comes around. LOL

I know, and have met several people who get VERY UPSET that Christians take part in Halloween.  Me? My dad who was a preacher NEVER discouraged me from running around with the other kids, making noise and trying to figure out who everyone was.

Sad to say, I was raised before there was such a thing as trick or treat.  We did some ‘tricking’. Taking a bar of soap from our bathrooms, we headed down town to ‘soap some windows.’  Seldom did anyone leave their trash can out at the road, because boys made sure they were turned over and rolled down the street. I am sure girls never did things like that.

I always thought that making your ‘costume or mask’ was part of the challenge. You could always go to the Dime Store and get a ‘Long Ranger type half mask for a dime, or a full face one for 20 cents. They were stuck together in stacks like drink covers at McDonalds. My favorite was dressing like a Hobo with a red nose and dirty face. Using a girl’s lipstick for the nose (I had to buy a nickel lipstick ‘cause my mama and sister weren’t allowed to wear lipstick.) I always gave it to Shirley, it was our secret. I think she ‘sinned’ and wore it at school sometime. ;-)

Hair could be died with food coloring. Many, many kids used Grocery bags to cut up, paint and make masks. There was always the Very Original kids that stuck out.  The towns had one ‘Main Street’ and everyone milled up and down the street, fake scaring each other.
And then the guy who can afford to decorate a beautiful truck. to show you never grow up!

I watch families now and they spend a lot to decorate and costume their kids.  And I like the giant fan operated and blow up monsters, dragons and pumpkins.
Halloween time is a time for kids….. I like it.

PS:  Thanks for the comments and prayers for Gary's family. As always I appreciate the Bloggersville friends. This circle, thought shrinking, is a great safety net of support. You guys are the best.
Heck, it seems the refer is holding it's own after the Thermistor  change, but I said that before methinks. Still not ice though.........

It is hard to lose a loved one and friend.

Okay I loved years ago - life was fun then.

Now it is so stressed - harried - and expensive. The fin to me is gone.

I had missed the post about Gary- I am so sorry and prayers are going up. I didn't realize you were a preacher's kid. John has been a pastor for the last 20 years and we always caught flack from those "believers" that thought the Halloween was the Devil's holiday. Kind of sad and I know a lot of religions forbid their children to dress up and celebrate the holiday. As for me, I am so glad to see even my young teenage grandkids being just kids and having fun doing kids' stuff rather than drinking or doing drugs.

I well remember those masks! Some of them were kind of transparent and would have just the eyes, nose, mouth colored in so your skin showed through when you put the mask on.

I hope you and your sweetie have a wonderful night and upcoming weekend. xo Diana

We had 40 trick or treaters, more last year. We have lots of candy left over, thankfully hubby has a candy dish at work he keeps stocked for his employees so its going there. So many churches here had trunk or treat events with bouncy houses, etc. I am wondering if more people are opting for things like that rather than going door to door. The homemade costumes are the best, but I don't think I saw any of them last night. Most were store bought ones.

Sorry you had not little ghost or goblins come to your door, I know they would have been in for a big treat if they had shown up. I was over at one of son's house for trick or treat and they were very busy there. With all kinds of kids trick or treating. Here where I live, they did a big party at the club house but no one trick or treats. The must go elsewhere, because most of us are older...not many kids. Yes, our blogging community is a means of great support and I too appreciate it. Hope you'll soon have ice.

What great images you've chosen! We, too, had no trick-or-treaters; probably on account our house sets well apart (and "someone" left the porch light off so "they" might have candy for "themselves" - lol.)

My mother would've never considered a store-bought costume. She was a wonderful seamstress … and dad, a great imagination. The ONLY costume I requested was a "Flying Purple People Eater" (remember that song?) … but by that time I think they considered me "too old" to be going out.

You are the ONLY one I know who has ever mentioned soaping windows. Unfortunately, no-one remembers … but I've vivid memories of the local dime store inviting we children up to their storefront with pails of water and soap bars. I suppose it must have been 1955 or so; definitely a highlight that's stuck with me. THANKS for the memories!

Homemade costumes are the best! We used to dress up, go around and collect candy, go home and change to a different costume and head out again. Some of the neighbors knew this but they give us a second round of candy for the effort. We would sometimes get sneaky and hide to scare the little ones.
fun times.

This is a great post! It takes me back many years to coloring grocery bags and cutting holes for eyes and nose. I attended the Halloween evet at Church in the Woods, the kids had a wonderful time, safely. Buggy rides in the dark and miscellaneous games, tossing bean bags and rings for candy prizes. Of course, dinner was served with lots of Halloween decorated sweet stuff ~ you can freeze those candy bars ya know?

The last time I went out trick or treating me and my friend went as hobos. No red nose but dirty beard rubbed on with charcoal. I also dressed my little 4 year old nephew as a hobo back when me and Rick were dating. I enjoy seeing all the little ones dressed up for Halloween. Take care, Sheila
