TV, frustrating and confusing.

  Memorable Automobiles from The Past:

Marty Kerns and our '55
Sherry & Mark on our '55  when we lived in Key West.

Our 55 Ford, I did the customizing on it! (the bar grill and hood scoop!) We lived in the 42x8 trailer in the back ground.

Before I start, I just saw this on FB:

This is me and Jack Wiley. I didn't know Kiersten (his mother) had this picture. I am sure she or Matt took it, I held him while they ate and he just cried once!

For today:

Then and now. We in our church denomination smile at times concerning ‘sins’ of the past. I was never ‘allowed to go to the Show’ but I did sneak off and risk that sin. When TV became available to the average home in the USA, many people in our denomination ruled it a sin, in the category of the Movie Show. My dad did not consider it a sin, but since it was widely shunned in our denomination he would not allow one in the house. I did visit friends that had TVs and loved to watch Wrestling on Sat. Nite, then run home just after midnight!

If you watched Wrestling, you had to suffer through “The Hit Parade.” It aired just before wrestling. The hit parade put on the top ten songs of the previous week. If you are fortunate to remember it you will remember the names: Dorothy Collins, Snooky Lanson, Gisele MacKenzie, and Russell Arms, with bandleader Raymond Scott.

Anyway I did start enjoying the scenes used and the singers of the show. But…… What I remember was Wrestling. I KNEW it was real, my brother Odis, who was a real boxer, a local contender in his early days would get very upset if someone thought wrestling was real.

Ok, sorry to chase a rabbit with this entry, this is about TV! With a hurricane in the wind we turned to the TV. What a waste. I think there was 5 mins of weather and 15 minutes of commercials. The News and Commercials have folks who compete with each other to see who can say the most words in 60 seconds.

I can’t listen that fast. So as I watched I thought, maybe the church leaders were right, this thing is a SIN, LOL.  Maybe NOT back in the 50’s. Back then Howdy Doody, wrestling’ ‘Your Hit Parade’ and cartoons on Saturday morning was on. BUT what about now when vulgarity and news(LOL) are allowed.? I’m not sure. I might ask Victor, since Billy Graham is dead and I cannot ask him.

Below is a TV commercial in '55 for the Chevy . To compare to commercials of today. If you have time.

I remember seeing car commercials way back when showing how cars were assembled. I found it fascinating, even at my young age! Commercials sure have changed over the years, haven't they? I remember when every other commercial was one for cigarettes until they banned that advertising on TV and then later in magazines. Might be good to put the Weather Channel app on your phone and you could probably get updates about storms etc through them. Commercials seem to come up everywhere. You watch something on YouTube and halfway through it they run an ad. Oh well, I guess they have to make their money somewhere.

TV sure aint as simple as it used to be. Sometimes I can’t catch when one show ends and another begins. We mostly watch TV a few hours before bed after we have wound down from the day.
We struggle to find a show that does not glamorize sin.

Wow Jack ... do not compare me to Billy Graham. I am not as good or Saintly as he was. One of our great and famous rock singers, Cliff Richard, met Billy Graham see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x7G3Wf3FV6o

You are right about the bad influence of TV these days. Sadly many people on TV are intent on influencing vulnerable minds towards the negativity of life. They spread their message of doom, hate and despair; and they call it entertainment.

God bless you and yours.

Exactly! I remember when commercials were actually entertaining. (Well, most of them anyway.)
When they began advertising feminine hygiene products I was embarrassed; but now when they show two men kissing on network prime time, I'm disgusted. Like Lisa said, it's increasingly difficult to find something that doesn't glamorize sin. Sad, that this is our children's new normal.

PS - Love the picture of you and Jack Wiley!

so true the commercials have changed and they are also getting longer. I sit with my book and read when they come on. They tempt us with all kinds of things that are probably sins. Thinking we should havae more and more of everything. But if we are wise we realize it's not things that make us hay but the people we love.

Opps I did it again. I meant it's not things that make us happy.

I love this. Our church was heavy about sin and TV, movies. Wow. With so many options for dating taken off the table, lots of teens went to corn fields and made out(heavy duty kissing), get pregnant. Now they will have lots of entertainment.

You and Jack Wiley make an adorable picture...a God Wink moment. As for ads and tv, I watch very little of it. The guide sure doesn't offer much for tasteful entertainment. I used to laugh at my good ol'neighbor when he'd say, 'What's the world coming to?' but now I see he was so right. If he were still alive today, he'd be appalled. It's a sad state the world is in, especially for our youth. Unless they'd been raised with Christianity, I pray for them all.

Oh my goodness, you and Jack WIley took such a sweet photo. What a wonderful memory to have. Times have changed and not for the better. We watch old Westerns and we have dozens of DVDs that we watch. The commercials are overwhelming and the Big PHarma ones are the worst next to the Medicare, I am entitled! UGH no you earned it if you worked for it. THat Joe Namath and actor who said DYN-O-MITE back in the old days do those commercials. I find them truly offensive. Many years ago Jeff Foxworthy did a comedy routine about TV commercials and the horrible side effects! He was hilarious but truthful. The side effects will kill you! It is mind numbing. Then commercials come on saying we have an opiode problem in America! Really?? My dad would say when I was an old woman I would be the world be backward. I am grateful my folks are not here to witness this destruction. Even the cartoon channel with Tom & Jerry have the horrible Big PHarma commercials. Very sad indeed. If my mom were here she'd say the world is hard, pray harder. I hope you have a wonderufl week.
