I never owned one, actually never rode many, but as the song says, ‘My Heroes have always been cowboys.’ I know the big ‘O’ girls up in Wisconsin are horse lovers. Even some have life long injuries I think, from riding. Horse raising, training and photography is still in the family.
Von Dale and his family had a horse. Jim & Bub page had a horse. They would borrow a blind horse for me to ride and we would take some rides up into the mountains and explore. It was always a thrill to me.
Of our friends now, David Luke in FL and in NC, Von Dale and his wife Rose are the only ones that have horses. As a matter of fact that is the last time we rode. Tuck rounded up four horses out of his pasture and I helped (a little) bridle and saddle them. Then we two couples rode for an hour or so.
(Evidently they are both hard of hearing)
There is a certain feeling of pride in one’s ability to direct a 2,000 lb animal around. There is also the feeling you have of the height you are viewing from that also adds to the feeling.
But to the neophyte like me, one does not know the work and upkeep to owning and taking care of a large animal.
Now our own Paula here in bloggerville, is a Cowgirl, but she cheats, she does it from a pickup truck. LOL
(These are some of our neighbors now, This area of Florida is beautiful horse country)
I have been to bull fights in Spain and up close you can realize the danger to the matador. I have only been to two rodeos. Each made me realize the strength and ability those cowboys and cowgirls must have to run the barrels. Wow, and to dodge the hooves when thrown from the wilder ones. I do have experience there, I was thrown once. It is a little scary.
(When a kiss is not just a KISS)
I want a horse, but Sherry won’t let one in the motor home! LOL
Thanks for coming this way

PS:
It is easy to tell someone how something should be done, but a whole ‘nother world to actually do it.

This owner thinks the horse also needs a ride!

Sherry is a smart gal - no horse for Jack in the RV. And you rode a blind horse in the mountains???
Love, love, LOVE the caption under the third photo; that made me laugh out loud. You have a keen sense of humor, Jack.
I had a Shetland pony (2 of them, actually) when I was a girl; those were the meanest little ponies. I loved them, but the mother pony did NOT want me to ride her, and one time, just to show me, she ran me under the clothesline in the back yard. Methinks she wanted me dead.
Sending you hugs,
Jackie
Do you remember your first pony ride? I volunteered the Church Bus to take the third grade on a field
trip. Dad didn't know about it
until she thank him for volunteering. They had a young
pony and I guess it was not use
to people riding. They were going to let everyone ride. You were the first one to get on and rode a short distance and it threw you off. I jump out of the barn on a pile of hay, but it was a fun day. I think the bus ride was just as much fun. Dad always entertained everybody. HE was a great DAD.
What a fun post, Jack! From the time I was little, my heroes were Fury and (my friend) Flicka ... Trigger and Buttermilk, too.
Towards the end of her life, my mother would still manage to chuckle when I told her, "You gave me the best childhood ever ... but I'm still waiting for my pony."
It could get a bit crowded in the motor home with the horse, I see Sherry's logic about not allowing one in there :)
I've never ridden a horse, but it does look like an exhilarating experience.
betty
There is a gracefulness about horses that captures our imagination. They bespeak freedom and adventure.
I grew up watching cowboy shows on tv all the time and I guess that made me dream of riding them, but I've always been a city girl. I enjoyed the pictures and the captions today. Cold with a little sunshine here this morning. Supposed to be in the teens this weekend. Enjoy your sunny days!
You're right Jack, I do cheat. I don't like horses. My granddaughter on the other hand has many trophys and ribbons for Hunter Jumping.
(evidently they are both hard of hearing)
Haaaaaaaaa, I do love that. And horses too. ~Mary
Here's one part of a horse you won't like...
First book I read was about horses, and it has been about two decades since last I was upon one.
A great Sunday for you all.
I love horses as well, Jack, what a great post! Thank you so much for sharing.
