Pictures and memories

I had some pictures pop up on my screen saver that reminded me of a great trip we took a few years ago.

Into the Yukon to..

Watson Lake & the Sign forest.

In 1942 Pvt. Carl Lindley was home sick and put the name of his home town, Danville, IL with the miles home on a post, while working on the ALCAN Hiway. Others added theirs, it  is no a ritual for all passing thru to add a sign. We added ours to the over 100,000 there now.

So our names are there in the sign forest. The only thing I had was an old NC tag JNK 1095 I wrote Kat, Dick, Sherry and my names on it. Funny we found a friend, Junie’s, name in the thousands of signs.

On To Dawson, buildings sinking because of the permafrost thaw. I was surprised at the bleakness of the land, I panned for Gold in Bonanza Creek and got a couple very small flakes.

We crossed the Yukon River on a Ferry. (this is Dick and Kat’s motor Home on the ferry), the back end hanging out!  Then we took the Top of the World Highway to Alaska.

It was fun watching the Salmon fishermen Close to Palmer.

We spent many evenings around a camp fire where we pulled our motorhomes off the roads into the bush near creeks and rivers.

This was Kat & Dick, the best traveling partners we ever had that traveled in their own Motor Home, a perfect couple to be with.

We visited Fairbanks, Valdez, Tok, Chicken, Anchorage and traveled the Kenai. Dick and I fished the Kenai and the bay near Sewart. We ate fresh King & Sockeye Salmon.  We feasted on Halibut. Took a bus out into the preserve of Mt. Whitney. We drove all but about 40 miles of the paved roads in Alaska. Dick volunteered us to sheet and roof a small addition to a church he saw folks working on. We had a great time, Dick was just like that.

It was the most amazing and exciting trip we ever took. And this is all the pictures I could locate of the trip!

If I run across anymore I will post them.

Thanks for coming this way…

Always so good to 'travel' with you...even back in time, my friend.
I'm amazed at the number of items that people have posted at the sign forest...and to see you and Sherry with your tag. Wonderful!!!
I love the friendships that you have made and continue to enjoy through the years. I also am touched at the generosity of you and your friends as you travel this great land.
I have a pan that I bought to pan gold with. I don't know how to use it. I have no clue! So, it just sits. When we go to our NC home, I thought I might try it in some of the mountain streams in the Appalachians, but like I said, I don't know how to use it. Shows on TV make it look simple, but I'm sure it's not as simple as it looks.
Sending you and Sherry great big hugs...hoping you have a blessed Sunday.
Hugs,
Jackie

So did you drive to Alaska??? How long did it take you to drive from Washington to Alaska? What time of the year did you go? Was it dangerous? Was there snow or had it melted?

I went to Alaska one time - but I flew - very beautiful place.

Would you want to move there?

I've heard a lot about Alaska with John's two sisters living there but I've never been. The one time John went I took my vacation at home with the TV OFF. lol I like all those signs.

Sounded like it was a wonderful trip with memories that have lasted a lifetime!!! I've never been to Alaska, but one of the places I think I would enjoy seeing! (as long as it wasn't the middle of winter :)

I do agree with you about pulling out the pictures and having some memories brighten up your day. With memories like yours, everyday has to be good. What an adventure that must have been. We are warming up here into the 40's today. Maybe the snow will finally melt away. Until the next round. Hope you both have a wonderful Sunday!

What a fabulous memory ... good friends, good food and beautiful surroundings!
Gosh, it's still early morning here, and now I'm craving halibut - lol!

Wishing you both a sweet Sunday!

I've had relatics live in Alaska, Cher was from the North Pole and liked to sit on Santa's lap and watch the moose in her yard, and my nephew and his wife lived near Soldotna. They were the fisherfolks and lived their dream of living off the land. They had to carry a rifle to the outhouse because of all the bear. They experienced true Alaska, the way I would have loved doing when I was more healthy.
I'm glad you got to go...so, did you catch any Salmon? Man, now that's some great eating.
Blessings

'58 -the first year for the Impala line for Chevrolet, offered that year as the convertible as seen in the Chevron ad and also as a 2 dr. hardtop. It didn't take Chevrolet long to water the Impala down by offering it as a four door sedan and in other body styles, replacing the Bel-Air as their top of the line vehicle...
