Sleepy in Church

(Pictures from the internet)

Well I am down to my many one line notes, this one I thought might make a good blog entry: Do you ever get sleepy in church (PTA, driving, on the computer and your mouse runs out of your hand (Sis Shirl does that))? You probably can figure when I made that note, I was so sleepy I tried wiggling my toes, tightening and releasing the muscles in my legs, still my eyes slowly closed.
Yeah, I even tried listening, but of course that did not work. I tried reading lips but my eyes slowly closed again. So I counted light fixtures, 52 if I remember right. I counted ceiling tiles, bald headed men, people who were asleep (there were 5). Mostly men including Elmer (my brother in law).

Elmer has had plenty of practice he is approaching 90. But he has been sleeping well in church for 40-50 years. Elmer has good control, he neither nods nor droops his head but sits straight up. He is a good sleeper.
I count benches and the number of people per bench. (Benches=pews).  My cousin’s favorite joke is: “So now they are pews?, I thought that is what the lady said when I sat beside her; pew! pew!”  It was always funny the way he said it.

Sometimes it helps me stay awake to look thru the hymnals to see how many song writers I recognize. I have been fortunate to actually know several over the years. I even served in the Air Force with one guy who became a song writer.

(But this s the way it is done!)
My favorite gospel song writer was Vep Ellis. I met him once in 1953  on a song promotional tour. Vep could play several instruments and that fascinated me.

I’m awake now. Speaking of a one man band, once in Gila Bend, AZ  a fellow camper said the Sons of the Pioneers have a Supper club in Tucson, so we went. At that time I could hear and really did enjoy it. Sonny, the oldest one in the band took over when they sang “Mama Don’t Allow no Guitar Playing Round Here”.

He picked up & played every instrument they named. That old dude was sweating when he finished, must have been 7-8 different instruments. We had a great time. I didn’t even know the Sons of the Pioneers were still performing.  I hear they have a place in Branson, MO.
Bonnie, who comments here, has a son who plays a few instruments.
I hope I didn’t put you to sleep.

PS:
Sleeping in church can be forgiving, but sleeping while driving could be unforgiving.

I don't fall asleep or feel sleepy in church because mainly its bright in there, but put me in a movie theater and I will somethings have a struggle to stay awake :) I keep notes from the sermon and will occasionally doodle :)

Have to laugh about your mention of Gila Bend, not much there, is there?

That picture of the little boy asleep on the pew reminded me of my youngest son when he was little. He regularly took a nap on a pew. One time our church was under renovation and we were set up in a hall temporarily and sat on chairs. He got upset that he had no place to lay down and take a nap. Thankfully he finally did outgrow nap time. Ha!

Not so much in church, but there's something about sitting in a darkened movie theater (or boring presentation at work) that get my eyeballs to rolling back in my head like there were strings attached!
That's cute advice about counting ceiling tiles, etc. The insides of my mouth get pretty sore from my biting them!

PS - When I just tried bypassing the security function and hit 'publish your comment' the only result was a pop-up telling me to log back into Blogland!

Oh my gosh I have had this problem before - I can sit so long and then ... I can get where I am so tired I try anything to stay awake. I carry a little energy drink with me if I know I am going to be somewhere for a long time! (When it is so boring - but don't tell anyone.)

What I try not to do is yawn in church but is happens.. I haven't seen sleeping to much lately. I didn't know Elmer could sleep. I will ask Ann to watch and signal me if he is asleep. You are right I have almost gone to sleep when typing on the computer and when the mouse runs off it wakes me.
