Title: Health of old people

Autos of beauty
 Stutz Blackhawk, 1970s

I read, “Growing old isn’t for Wimps,” given to us by a friend. There was much about pains, doctors and medicines. Many of our peers spend much of their time at the Doctor’s office and have a list of meds that could break a person. Thank goodness Sherry & I have escaped that so far.  I have made it a practice to not advise anyone on doctors and medicines (even my sweetheart). I use common sense myself.

I do a lot of self-diagnosis. I am a believer in cheap bourbon and/or honey, for throat and cold problems. I was taking a statin and weened myself off it  I prescribed oats at least 4-5 times a week and that did the trick. Sherry either does oatmeal for breakfast or adds it to our cold cereal. The doctor now says, “The blood work is beautiful.” Our treat is eggs, bacon and grits every once in a while. We eat chicken mostly. Red meat is our dinner ‘treat’.

Besides normal activity, we try to walk at least 2-3 miles a day 5-6 times a week. We prefer to walk 7 days a week.

The last checkup the dr. recommended surgery to remove a ‘skin cancer’ tumor. I will get that done. I have friends who had one removed and now every year it is one or two more. I don’t like that idea. The odds of skin cancer causing death is VERY LOW. I don’t think ‘continual cutting’ on my body is good for me.

It’s foolish to say our health is completely due to our diet and exercise. I do think that has much to do with it. BUT mostly I think we are blessed with good body genes (but bad hearing and bad teeth). LOL

I exercise when we are not on the road by staying busy. Here I have straightened the basement, cleaned the gutters, shoveled the icy snow a little and climbed the stairs a ‘million’ times.  (That could be an exaggeration.) LOL

Being here is trouble. I climbed up on a roof to check for leaks. I made a path thru the ice and snow as I went. I knew I was in no danger. Unfortunately someone saw me. Our property manager called Sherry to find out where to send our check. He said, “I saw Jack on the roof at Ewing Drive, tell him to STAY OFF ROOFS.”

Sherry has said I am not old until next month when I turn 80. So IMO I can get on roofs until then. DADGUMMIT!

Anna Mae and I do try to walk every 2 hours, in senior housing there is not much to do, so we walk the hall ways of this 50 unit building, both floors, if we walk the hallways and 2 stair wells 6 times a day we have walked a mile. If I do not walk I can feel it in my legs ! Right now it is 32 degrees and snowing, Friday it will be 50 and raining, this is sickness weather being warm, cold and warm ! Stay Healthy you 2, Gary & Anna Mae

Nick has a bowl of oatmeal every morning and then goes for a 5 mile walk 7 days a week. Me, I eat waffles, muffins, bacon, eggs, toast or whatever I can find in my Nutrisystem order. And then I strugge to get in 10k steps. I will hula hoop and do some sit ups after dinner but in the summer I will go for a 3 mile walk.
We are not on any meds either except Nick is on a low dose of blood pressure med that he sweres he dont need.
Our bones hurt but we are well and healthy. I always said Id die a crippled old woman instead of a sick one.

Sunny and 34 this morning.

Oh and too....Get that tumor thing removed but beware of doctors. If your healthy and they cant find anything wrong with you, they will start picking at moles and freckles. Removing spots on skin seem to be the latest thing now days.

It's good that you have wonderful health, both of you, but no sense in taking chances. It doesn't hurt to keep active for sure, but you gotta make wise choices. Not all of us are as limber as we used to be for sure ! I agree...stay off that roof. Walking and oatmeal are good choices, the roof not so much. Take good care there !

Sounds like the two of you do things right for your health.

Does the property manager have the right to tell you not to get on the roof?

You probably ought to leave that roof walking to one of those younguns when there is ice or snow up there? You two are in great shape, I admire your walking regimen!

Bill goes on the roof to shovel and remove ice but he ties a rope around his waist that's attached to the chimney...I still watch and worry. Be careful.
We both have inherited heart issues, diabetes as well as joint aches and are on meds. to help control them. I'm not so sure it's the best route to take.
You two are very fortunate and do the part to keep your health the best. I wish I wasn't afraid of falling with winter walks. Two back surgeries from falls is enough. Stay strong and you will last very long.
love n' hugs from up north where it's 39 again. I am NOT complaining. It's been a very mild winter for us so far so fingers are crossed through May.

I don't know WHAT it is with you and Tom, wanting to get up there above the eaves … like Tevye in a Fiddler on the Roof! Like to scare a gal to death! Yes, indeed, you two are mighty blessed to enjoy great health. A long-time blog friend (Carol at Buttercup Counts her Blessings) recently hit her yearly goal of (walking) 1,000 miles in and around Manhattan. THIS, after back surgery and facing a hip replacement next month. You and she are my idols!

Heights bother me so if I saw you up on the roof, I'd be advising Sherry that you get off of it and stay off of it, LOL :) It amazes me how people younger than me are on so many medications. Good for you and Sherry to have been blessed with good health (one can always work around poor hearing and teeth).
