STOP when you have“2300 mg?”, say what?

deadfrompowerpoint

The headlines read, “Something you eat everyday can be fatal”.

                fatal_skull__62811

I am a logical person, if we are eating something that will actually be FATAL, I mean right now, they are gonna say loud and clear WHAT it is, they are not going to use a teaser headline, ARE THEY?

I did click on the subject. It is SALT. Yes, I have heard it before and I don’t doubt a person can have too much salt.  I also know most bodies vary in their ability to tolerate any one substance. There are some folk who will actually die if they eat  peanuts. Most of us can eat a bushel of ‘em, and they just make us fat.

salt

I do eat too much salt. I salt my cantaloupe, watermelon, apples, grits, eggs, steak, I even add a little salt to my cornbread and milk to accommodate the onion I cut up in it.

In the article it says a person should not consume more than 2300 mg of salt a day.  I do wish I had been raised around the metric system. Then I would be compatible with the rest of the world, BUT I WAS NOT.

Salt-Kills

You may remember a few years ago congress in their infinite wisdom declared we, the USA, would convert to the metric system on mid night Dec 31st 19xx. It never happened. The Mechanics who knew a 9/16” or 1/2” wrench by sight, had no idea what a 13mm was, and some were not about to learn.

So here I am in the USA, I do not know if 2300mg is a cup or a pinch.  Okay I know, there are conversion tables on the net, let’s see,

2300mg =.081130 oz.  Now that makes it as clear as mud.  So how many tea spoons is that?

.081130oz=.48tspn (about 1/2 teaspoon Winking smile)  So Now I know that I should not consume but about a half teaspoon of salt a day.

When I make rice I throw in about a teaspoon of salt.  Then I eat about half of that, now if I add more salt to my tomato, I’m DEAD.  OUCH

FENCE IN THE GREAT SALT LAKE.

I really do not mean to make light of the dangers of too much salt, what I am trying to say, if you are speaking to someone in the USA, don’t tell them 2300mg will kill you, say 1/2 teaspoon of salt a day could kill you, then we know what we are reading.  I cannot be the the only one who does not use the metric system.

(I can’t help it this is salt to me)

I know small amounts are hard to define  without using the metric system, but that doesn’t make it less frustrating.

BREAKING NEWS: “New England Journal of Medicine Just announced a study that  debunks the no-salt Theory, More in a later entry.”

PS: (Living a sermon, a son’s confession)

Today, I kissed my dad on the forehead as he passed away in a small hospital bed. About 5 seconds after he passed, I realized it was the first time I had given him a kiss since I was a little boy.

My hard working mother says you "need a little salt!"

One of the problems with the American diet, I think, is not enough potassium (fruits and veggies). Potassium works in balance with sodium. So, I say, have a fresh tomato and sprinkle a little salt on it. ;-)

There is a good balance to most everything.I like the comment left by Bonney...If 1/2 tsp is bad, then I'm probably more than guilty. I always like to think that moderation in all things is the way to live. I'll be interested to see the other post that debunks the theory. It's clouding up here with rain threatening to take over most of the day. Hope you all have a great Sunday there on the Potomac.

I do not add salt to many things but use a lot of black pepper. My brother who is very health conscious puts salt on everything and says he needs it because he sweats so much, he is a marine mechanic....

What's terrible is how much salt is in processed foods or canned goods. Can't get away from it no matter how hard you might want to try to limit it. I've gotten to buying low sodium of soups used for cooking etc. We cook with salt if the recipe calls for it, but don't usually add it at the table. I like what Ma said, all things in moderation.

I do remember the big fuss of converting to metric system and learning some of it in school, but I'm glad we are still with our cups and teaspoons; that I can handle so much more better!

I don't know the metric system from a hole in the ground and don't try to know it. I never salt anything extra and like it fine without. I do love my sugar but I think they could leave a lot of the sugar out of bought cookies and such. They are sweeter then they need to be.

Salty stuff has always been my Achilles heel (v. sugar), so I try to avoid it at all costs. ('Try' being the key here - ha.)

Gosh, but I remember that big campaign to convert Americans. My mom even signed up for an evening class!
Yours is such a funny take on how it's all around us, and none of us really know what they're saying!
Reminds me of when DH and I took our Alaskan cruise some 10 years ago and the captain's PA announcements would go something like this: "Black bear at ___ degrees." Since I don't "do" degrees, my poor old head was spinning like that girl in the "Exorcist."

I cut out salt when I was 17 years old and have stuck with it all these years.
