Early interesting Cars:
It was 1953 the last time I actually ‘celebrated’ Halloween, and had fun as a kid. I actually do not know when the practice of ‘Trick or Treat’, came about down South or anyplace else. BUT it wasn’t during my childhood.
We only made or created our own costumes and walked around ‘Tricking’. We walked downtown (Valdese, NC had only one street of businesses), most of us boys had a bar of soap taken from home and soaped the windows of businesses down town (Soaping meaning writing stuff or just making lines and circles on the display glass windows with a dry bar of soap). Some of us turned over trash barrels if someone had been forgetful enough to leave them out that night.
At times the mean guys (me sometimes) used a bar of canning wax to mark the windows, making it harder for the businesses to clean the windows.
But most of all it was noise making and trying to figure out who everyone else was behind their homemade masks. Some kids did have the 10-25 cent face masks from the dime store. It was just a lot of fun and a night just to get out celebrate and have a good time.
Most families had a pumpkin carved on their porch with a candle inside. Daddy always got us a pumpkin and mama let us use the kitchen to carve it. Shirley was always artistic and we had a neat ‘jack-o-lantern.’
Now, what is your favorite candy? Sherry and I were talking, she preferred Hershey chocolate bar or Milky Way. I liked Almond Joy or Snickers. When I ate candy the Milkyway/Snicker bars were a nickel. Mounds and Almond Joy was ten cents. The Biggie that I LOVED but seldom bought was 25 cents, the MARS BAR!

At this house over 20 years ago when we lived here, we had a total of 4 trick or treaters. We have a bag of candy, just in case, that we will probably eat after Halloween. You guys have a good one!

FINALLY! Someone else recalls 'soaping' merchants' windows! I must have been no more than 5 or 6, but that remains a pivotal moment. THAT and the icy-cold water in the galvanized bucket. I've asked several of my classmates, but no-one else remembers that.
Ya, we share lots of the same recollections. I always felt a bit sorry for those kids who were reduced to wearing a dime-store mask; whose mother's didn't have time to create something original. Gotta say, my all-time favorite treats were the homemade popcorn balls old Mrs. Dorris created. As far as a favorite candy bar, I think that was a Mallo-Cup. I don't have much of a sweet tooth these days, but wouldn't say "no" to a Reese's Cup!
How times have changed. Decoratons for halloween are rarely as a simple jack o'lantern these days. Folks see up elaborate displays, and those big cancy bars are usually $1 or more. I'll be going over to my son's for trick or treat Thursday night here. The say that the most favorite candy for trick or treat iM&M's. Happy Halloween!
We were in 4-H and our club would always have a Halloween party that included dunking for apples or apple on a string to catch with our teeth with our hands behind our backs. Always fun and of course, blind-folded and reaching into jello or oiled spaghetti and being told it was brains and guts. Mom had a party once for all the grandloves, what fun with the same games. My favorite candy bar is 3 Musketeers, Mounds, & Milky Way....Bill loves the Reese's Peanut Butter Cups. We no longer have any more than a few Trick or Treaters, but we do keep candy ' just in case.' This was a fun recall.

Last time I went trick or treating was when I was in 8th grade. My mom didn't think teenagers should go trick or treating, though lots of high schoolers go, including my step granddaughter who is going out with a group of her friends. My mom talked about soaping of windows. I think that's how trick or treating started. People got tired of the "mess" with soaping windows and started thinking how to stop it and thought handing out a treat might be a better option. We carved pumpkins last night; they came out good; I'll be doing a Halloween post on Thursday. Last year we had about 50 trick or treaters. We'll see what this year brings.

My favorite candy bar is Snickers. Reese cups come in a close second. As far as other kinds of candy, I have always like the pixxi sticks or the liquid filled wax bottles.

I remember going out Halloween night, I lived in the country and had to find a ride or walk the 5 miles to Town, We went in homemade costumes, usually as a Bum or Hobo which was easy for us as we had lots of worn out clothes and plenty of coal dust!! My favorite candy was homemade Peanut Butter Fudge, Popcorn Balls, back when it was safe to eat them !! We got home with our grocery bag and was amazed at "Our Haul", with a large family this much candy was awesome!!
