Cars of beauty:
For today
Tuesday:
I laughed out loud when I read some comments. A day or so ago it
was a line by Susan Kane http://thecontemplativecat.blogspot.com/2020/04/darkest-hour-is-just-before-dawn.html.
, Concerning singing. She said she was a pretty good singer, problem is, she only knew one or two lines of every song. I laughed because I am REALLY the same. There are times I wear that line out, and I know Sherry gets tired of that. LOL

Growing up I knew every verse of religious songs because we
attended church 4 or 5 times a week, and would sing the same songs for a year,
then next year add some.
Kids are sacrilegious (*even in very fundamental churches).
Outside the church boys would sing loudly, “On a hill faraway stood an old
Chevrolet, it’s upholstery tattered and torn, etc.” There were many more. Mama
woulda “tanned my hide” had she heard me sing the substitute lines.
That said, I had two
brothers in law, Jim, Shirley’s hubby and Vernon, Sherry’s brother (still alive
and kicking at 87), who knew every word of hundreds of songs.(Most of the songs
from the 40-50s eras.) When they got together they would try to stump each other,
I never saw it happen.
Strange thing about memory, evidently it has very little to do
with education. Jim was a graduate of NC State and Vernon never made it to High
School. Since like Susan (above) I only knew one line I was amazed to hear the
words to songs like “Mr. Bo Jangles”, “I’m My own Grandpa” and “Mares eat Oats”.
Strange what one line in a comment can generate. Huh?

I'm much the same these days, I only remember a line or two to most any song. I'll hear a tune early in the day and then sing it over and over again all day long. That line sticks in my head. Now today I'll probably be singing Mares eat oats. Thanks for putting that line in my head today. Have sung or ever though of that song in ages.
Haven't sung or even thought of that song in ages. Ha!
Too funny about your 'substitute' lyrics to Old Rugged Cross! Aw, I'm pretty sure even the good Lord had to chuckle.
I'd have sure enjoyed hearing Jim and Vern trying to stump one another. And what great contestants they'd be on that (now-defunct) game show, "Don't Forget the Lyrics." A while back Tom remarked he was surprised at my recollection of lyrics -- but nothing about the music itself. We're opposites that way; he's always focused on the instrumentals. Fun post!
I can sing along with the song and know all the lyrics but sing it on my own and I won't know many of the lines. Some people have that knack though!

Haha cute post. Yea I know all the lines to a lot of church songs and yes, we also sang different versions. “The Old Rugged Chevrolet” was one of the songs out of the mouth of us babes too. Haha.

Thanks for a fun post, it brings back memories of songs and I can't remember all the words either. We used to substitute words too in church and one I recall was the Christmas carol "while shepherds washed their socks by night".
If the song is playing I can sing along... badly.. but I know the words. If I had to come up with them on my own I'd be lost. Not sure what that says about me!
