Memorable Automobiles from The Past:
For today:
I have read
literally hundreds of books since I started reading seriously when I was nearly
60. I started when on a mission to ‘retrieve’ a grandson. I
figured I would be alone for months. Our daughter in Law Carol had taken our
first Grandson across the USA, and I meant to retrieve him legally.
While shopping I passed a stack of books, this one was
Clancy’s, “Executive Orders”, 2 inches thick, hardback, $20. I figured it would
take me months to read it. I read it in a week and was hooked. The mission did
take a good while, BUT I helped son Jack get custody. LONG story.
This is
about books, lines or quotes by writers that stick with you. I have read 3 by Hemmingway. I have no idea if he was a believer or atheist, but he was a good writer.
In the book, “For Whom The Bell Tolls” I am sure I read
the line I am writing about. I just found the book on line and scanned thru it did not find the location. I could
have easily missed it this time, but it was a conversation between one of the
old French Resistant’s and a spy. He was telling the spy who had come to help
dynamite a bridge, about his life. He told of seeing his family killed by the
Nazi. His home burned and other friends killed.
The spy
asked, “Do your pray?”
“No
more,” the man said with his head lowered, “Because God is gone, and I miss Him!”
I was so
wrapped up in the book, reading the destruction and warped actions of the
occupying Nazi Army, when I read that line, “God is gone, and I miss him!” I could mentally
relate to the feelings he was expressing, in the writer's mind (I still get tears thinking or telling it).
I am not saying it was ‘spiritually’
inspired, but the writer did as he was supposed to do, he had me right there
with those underground resistant’s I could feel the despair.
So that
line has stuck with me for over 20 years. I am not sure one can feel it, unless
they are at that point in the book. But it got me.

writer hit you with a line you cannot forget?

My word, that's a powerful line! Now I'm thinking part of my inability to focus on a book is the ambient noise -- you know, the TV ... Tom (*grin*). Maybe next time I'll put in some ear buds.
Anyway. The only lines that come to mind are:
"Don't cry for him, ma'am. Tears are for the living." (from Tears are for the Living by Margaret Banister) and,
"The story of your life never starts at the beginning; don't they teach you anything in school?" (from The One in a Million Boy by Monica Wood).
Neat topic! I'm going to be interested in hearing what others have to say.
Interesting quote "God is gone and I miss him." I did not read that book so I'm unfamiliar with the story. Of course we know truly God is never gone :) I did read a paragraph from a book that really struck me and stuck with me. So much I took a picture of it from my phone since I was reading on my tablet. I plan to share it on my blog in a few weeks :)

For the wrong reasons this line sticks in my mind from Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra.
Enobarbus said of Cleopatra: Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale her infinite variety.
Meaning she will always be beautiful and vivacious and fresh in outlook.
We were told by our Literature teacher to memorise some lines fort our exams and this one stuck in my head. I did not really know what it meant.
A few days later the History teacher was late at school. His dog had died that morning. To console him I said: Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale Her infinite variety.
He hit me on the head!

There have been many books and quotes, I cannot just name one that stuck, but many. You know I love quotes. I've been reading since an early age and have always loved it. Each book takes us into a different world we wouldn't have known about otherwise. God never leaves us, it is we who leave him. He is a constant in my life. Always there. Such tragedies in the world would make us think the opposite, but it's true He is always there. So glad you were able to pick up the habit of reading books and that you found your grandson too.
I can’t recall any quotes from books. I am a terrible book reader as I get distracted to easy and have trouble understanding what I read. I have thought about finding some some books to listen too online using my earbuds while I work.
