You cannot choose your parents

Through out this world there are children being born who will grow up with loving dedicated parents. But the majority of children in this world today will not know their dad, or have many dads.

Sherry’s Parents

There are some good, solid reasons divorces happen. To put it on school yard terms, some men are just ‘crazy’; and not to leave the woman out, some of them are also crazy. There are men and women today who have been fooled by a partner until they are married, then BOOM!

My parents

I cringe when my grand kids ‘move’ in and establish a ‘relationship’. There are times it works and both accept the ‘responsibility’ of sexual activity. BUT in the majority of cases, the boy/man splits the minute a child becomes part of the future.

This is not a condemnation, but an observance.

WE all are victims or products of our upbringing. I happened to have been born into a family of very conservative parents. My dad was a minister/pastor in a denomination with very strict rules (Church of God). The churches dad pastored had some of the best people in the world attending, folks who only wanted to be Christ like.

Although many pastors were dogmatic about the ‘rules’ my dad never was. His messages were of Love. That however did not change the communities ‘view’ of our church, I knew our church was known as ‘holy-rollers’, although I seldom saw an ‘actual holy roller’. Some teachers had no problem saying, ‘You are one of the Holy Rollers, aren’t you?”

We had many ‘rules’ to live by. The girls seemed to have more rules. Girls could not cut their hair, they wore ‘stockings’, long dresses and long sleeves. No makeup or jewelry was allowed.  Over the years the rules changed, mostly for the good.

For the boys, we could not join in school sports or go to the show. Nor could not attend the school sports games. We could not  go swimming with girls, dance nor go into a ‘pool hall’ etc. I was sort of a rebel and hundreds of times wished my daddy was a Baptist or Methodist preacher. Surprised smile.

But, in contrast to my inner feelings, I knew my mama and daddy were honest, dedicated and loving parents. I have never known anyone I thought lived a better or more balanced life. Contrary to many preachers whom I knew, my daddy was not a dictator. Anytime I was punished (which was not as many times as I deserved) it was with love.

My life today is still a reaction to my childhood. Fortunately Sherry was raised by the same set of rules. It was many years before Sherry wore a wedding band, and she had grand kids before she would accept a diamond ‘engagement ring’.

I smile to think we were married in our teens, neither of us knew anything about sex, except the stories we had heard. We bungled thru and it has been SHE and I for over 57 years.  As far as I know we never wanted anything different, and she has been alone many times and I have hit many liberty ports, and it is still this: (YOU don’t have to read all the lyrics, I just felt like posting them)

(Then and now, still the most beautiful girl in the world.)

Imagine me and you, I do
I think about you day and night, it's only right
To think about the girl you love
And hold her tight, so happy together

If I should call you up, invest a dime
And you say you belong to me and ease my mind
Imagine how the world could be, so very fine
So happy together

I can't see me loving nobody
But you for all my life
When you're with me, baby
The skies will be blue for all my life

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they tossed the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you and you for me
So happy together

I can't see me loving nobody
But you for all my life
When you're with me, baby
The skies will be blue for all my life

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they tossed the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you and you for me
So happy together

Me and you and you and me
No matter how they tossed the dice, it had to be
The only one for me is you and you for me
So happy together
So happy together

How is the weather
So happy together
We're happy together
So happy together

So happy together
So happy together
So happy together

PS:

Life passes, some of us Bloggers have seen more family pass than are left. I love life, but I could embrace death. It is satisfying to be at that stage of life..

I agree that it is satisfying to be at this age. There have been so many changes over the years that I'm glad I got to experience what I did. Rules have changed but that is life constantly changing. I think the message of love and no condemnation is the best one. You have been so blessed, the two of you. I was too, but now am alone, I surely do have some great memories though and I think it helps when you both share the same values in life.

"My life today is still a reaction to my childhood."

You said a mouthful, right there.
Nice post. It makes me sad to think of all the kids that don't grow up in stable, loving homes.

Good teaching by Godly parents is what this world needs today.
Yes, she is just as lovely today as the angelic girl I see in the photo. Her beauty glows!

Nice post. Where I grew up Baptist didn't believe in dancing. We had never had a dance or prom in school so the school decided to have one. When word got out the news was if any Baptist kid went they would be put out of the church. This made the school come to a screeching stop and not have a dance. Some kids rebelled and danced under the big tree to a car radio. I wanted to go but I didn't dare even though I was Methodist. I bet they dance now. lol

We had a good life and our parents
were not strict and we did mostly what we wanted to do, but understood
the rules. Wonderful parents
that taught us about life by the
way they lived very good example.

That was interesting to read, Jack, about what was allowed and not allowed with the Church of God. I didn't realize they were a strict denomination like that.

I'm not fond of those couples that choose to live together first "to see if it will work out" over marriage (at least that's the excuse I've heard, LOL).

My son has several friends who lived together and you are right, when the child came along, there went the dad a little bit later or the relationship fizzled over this, over that. I wondered if it looked glamorous to son to have a baby with someone without being married and told him even if the relationship soured, you were still part of the child's life forever, at least in the form of paying child support. He agreed.

I loved the pictures of your parents and Sherry is a beauty, no matter what age she is :)

The problem today is that kids are growing up with no boundaries. LOVELY lyrics for sure.

I am so happy for the two of you. 57 years is wonderful. And I didn't know the Church of God was that strict - wow.
