At times life ain’t fun

 Memorable car of the day:

THAT 1948 Chevy Convertible

For today:

When I was 6 years old, I was in the room when grandma Darnell died. She had 9 men and 3 women around her bed, her children. None could stop that death.

I was there when my brothers and sisters died.  I was there when mama died and then my BIL Jim died.

Sherry’s mama died in my arms, as I tried desperately to keep her alive with CPR.

I was actually there when some took the last breath.  That is such a sad helpless feeling.

Just last night my screen saver brought to mind many friends who are GONE.

My best friend lost his sweet wife. He was the husband of Sherry’s sister Colette. Colette was a beautiful Christian lady. I remember the exact spot on the road while I was driving when Sonny said to me, “I know you think I am a terrible Christian, and I know you and everyone tells me she is in a better place, I believe it, but I don’t care, “I want her back!!”

Colette, Sonny and Sherry in Yosemite, he and I loved our girls who were sisters. They were the best of traveling companions.

We talked and I told him that me, nor especially God, would hold that against him. We are human.  We talked a lot, because we were the BEST of friends. Today, many years after his death, his name comes up at least once a day.

NO! I am not mad, upset nor frustrated, I am real. I miss Sonny, not as much as he missed his wife I am sure, BUT I miss him every day.

Today I am thinking of those who have gone over, those who have seen heaven and our Lord before me. I am not a bit envious of that……. And to tell the truth, many of them I would love to see back here with me, probably some kind of jealous love. ;-)

BUT THERE ARE/WERE FUN THINGS……  And yes, I remember them… I could kiss my girl for miles as she lay on the front seat across my lap facing me as I drove that straight drive ’48 Chevy. Traffic was much lighter then. LOL

She was one of them ’Good girls’ but once I did get her bra undone (with one hand!), but never got a handle on things. All she said was ‘hook it back’. Then she kissed me again.

Once after we were married and curb service was still popular. We ordered and ate. Then she would not leave me alone, we loved to smooch. The curb hop came out, apologized and said, the boss said knock it off.  WE really laughed and laughed, after all we were married. She has always been a hot mama!

So yep, I think of the fun things too.

You are a very wise man, Jack. I liked this post and it is good to remember our loved ones who departed. And pray for them. Prayers are a sign of our generosity.

God bless you.

As I grow older, the advent of each holiday season makes me feel a bit melancholy for 'what was.' Borrowing lyrics from my favorite song:

Memories
Light the corners of my mind
Misty watercolor memories
Of the way we were

Scattered pictures
Of the smiles we left behind
Smiles we gave to one another
For the way we were

Can it be that it was all so simple then?
Or has time re-written every line?
If we had the chance to do it all again
Tell me, would we?
Could we?

Memories
May be beautiful and yet
What's too painful to remember
We simply to choose to forget

So it's the laughter
We will remember
Whenever we remember
The way we were

So true, thankfully we do have a lot of good memories of the ones we've lost. They help us through the days we miss them so. I try to forget any of the bad and remember only the glad times we shared.

Mevely, thank you!!! That might likely be my most favorite Striesland song...YEP, memories are so awakened in my mind when I read Shipslog! At age eleven or twelve the "Awesome Darnell Family" came into my life. It was only Jackie, Jr [our little "pet" creature when they came for Sunday Dinner after Church.] Our favorite brother joke: "Robert, AKA Robby finished his plate of Chicken n Dumplings, Southern style. When he noted that thin and toned little Jack, Jr left a dumpling on his plate; he asked for it! Sherry laughed and said "Robby, you are a Pig". HaHa, HE NAILED HER ~ "a PIG sit on a chair???" Robert has been lean and mean for awhile, but still loves to clean up a plate! We, as a family have NEVER forgotten that clever little guy's comment! Nor will we ever forget the love and compassion our Minister Jack, SR, his wife Sherry and the kiddos [Mark came along] brought to so many families at our Church. What a blessing the Good Lord granted our congregation! We'd never have known how to get SMUCKERS PEANUT bUTTER OUT OF OUR MOUTHS!

Yes, when friends and loved ones pass away it will leave a void. Our souls may be a peace but our hearts still hurt. The holiday seasons seem to be when I miss loved ones the most. I guess because thats when we are usually all in the same place together and thats how we wish it always will be.
