Today's word ORTHODOX!

 Automobile’s of Art:

 1955 Chevy Corvette

Today started off a little slow (not like Lisa’s). I was up early (for me) and went out to make sure the coffee would be ready when my friend from the past arrived at 9am.  Okay that is still a problem. I talked to him over the phone and he said. “I will be over between 9 & 10.” All I heard was 9. So I was ready, even had coffee made. I wondered why my girl wasn’t out from the motor home. She came out about 9:15 smelled the coffee, and said, “You did hear him say between 9 & 10?” Shucks, my hearing got me again. About that time Deacon Malanowski drove up.

It wasn’t long until we were back many years ago. Going over some of the shipmates we knew. Of course I had to remind him of his ‘gotcha’ to Mr. Wilmot.

Each branch of service has their own terms for the start of the day, called ‘Quarters’ in the USN, where a senior man gets everyone’s attention reads the ‘plan of the day’ and informs the crew what is to be done that day. Our division was behind locked doors so we were pretty relaxed. LtCdr Wilmot was in charge that morning and he loved to tell ‘Polish jokes.’ That morning after he had told one, Ski held up his hand and Wilmot acknowledged him. He asked, “Mr. Wilmot, can you speak Polish?”
“No Ski, why do you ask?”
“Just wondering, sir, how does it feel to be dumber than a Pollock?”

The crew cracked up with best laugh of the cruise, Wilmot never told another joke degrading the Poles.

Anyway today was one of the best we have had in a while. I must admit to being educated by my friend on Church history.  He also corrected my misconception that he was a Protodeacon in the Roman Catholic Church, he is not.  He is associated with the Orthodox Church. Is my face red?

But to be honest I thought the Orthodox Church was more Protestant than Roman Catholic. He went back in history to 1000AD-1500AD if I remember correctly that the Orthodox Catholics separated from the Roman Catholics.

It is too late, to keep from being too long, it was refreshing (not thrilling) to know we had fought some of the same doubts concerning religion, God and our own inner faiths. At the time we were stationed together we were both in the Atheist/Agnostic corner and of course never discussed it even though we attended a Greek Orthodox Church service in Athens with the ship’s chaplain.  A church service that did impress me.

He often reads The Shipslog, so Deacon, it was so good to see you today!

Glad you got to visit and got the finer points cleared up too. There are so many different churches in this world it is easy to confuse them. One different from the other but all having one basic belief. I can only imagine the good time you had reminiscing about old times. Hope you do stay in touch with each other.

Being married to a Pole, I think that joke is super! So glad your conversation was informative, as well as fun! Nice, having an opportunity to 'learn stuff' without having to sit in a classroom.

I'm glad you'd reconnected with a dear friend from your service days. I'm sure you both enjoyed it over a hot cup of coffee. Sounds like it was a great way to start your day. You've lived!
love n' hugs from up north. It's still mild weather and we're loving it.
