It was the day I discovered America. I was born at home and everyone was proud to have a baby brother. I was the baby of 7 siblings.
Shirl was dad’s favorite, but I was mama’s pet. The toughest part of Dad & Mom’s life was past (they thought). They made it through the depression raising the older children, They always hinted that I started WWII but I didn’t.
This year I am 76, I thought I was old at 50, but I wasn’t even close. I see the youth of today who think they are invincible, I don’t fuss or try to straighten them out, because I thought the same.
Shirl, Kat and me. I was about 4 yrs old. Mama loved her chickens. This was the last chance she had. after this we were city folk.
You can never know what it feels like to get old until you start to get there, then it gets thru your thick skull, you just go around once, and if you didn’t get it right, there is no second chance.
I have only heard this song a couple times but it tells a tale:
I WISH I WAS 18 AGAIN
(Throckmorton)
At a bar down in Dallas an old man chimed in,
And I thought he was out of his his head.
Just being a young man I just laughed it off
When I heard what that old man had said.
He said I'll never again turn the young ladies heads,
Or go running off into the wind.
I'm three quarters home from the start to the end.
And I wish I was 18 again.
I wish I was 18 again.
And going where I've never been.
But old folks and old oaks
Standing tall just pretend.
I wish I was 18 again.
Now time turns the pages
And oh, life goes so fast.
The years turn the black hair all grey.
I talked to some young folks,
Hey they don't understand
The words this old man's got to say.
I wish I was 18 again.
And going where I've never been.
But old folks and old oaks
Standing tall just pretend.
I wish I was 18 again.
Lord, I wish I was 18 again!

PS:
I have very few regrets, Life has been good to me. BUT I am realistic enough to know I am OVER 3/4 home. My sons think I will live forever, But I remember thinking that of my dad.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU!
Yes I am 3/4 home and my kids think I will live forever too - but we know better.
Enjoy life as if comes.
Happy birthday, Jack!
LOVE the song. Going to show it to my hubby. He turns 76 in the autumn. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU. AND MANY MORE. Enjoy!
Ah, yes. If I only had half the wisdom at 18 that I'm feeling now! (LOL)
Like the line from one of my fav Crosby, Stills and Nash songs:
"....just look at them and sigh and know they love you."
Me? I don't think there's enough $ that would tempt me into going back to 18 again.
Hope you've enjoyed a wonderful birthday, my friend!
I'm late but also wish you a happy birthday. Cute little boy in the picture.
Happy Birthday Jack!! I hope you have many more! You are just as old as you feel. I thought years ago that I would never see 2015, but here I am. Take care, and I hope you have had a great day.
Happy birthday Jack!! I hope you had a great day celebrating!!! I do like the poem about being 18, I think I would settle for my mid 30s though; knew more then than I did when I was 18 :)
It is good to come to this point of your life and say you have few regrets!!
betty
I can just hear George Burns sing
that song he was old..I think I
will feel like Betty White she
is 93 and said that is just a number. I always like that picture
of you sitting on the grass posing. I think that was taking on the same day you got in a rocking chair beside Mother. Those were the good ole days.
Hope you had a wonderful Birthday.
You sure are popular with all those wishes....
Happy birthday, Jack! WOO! HOO! 39 AGAIN!
A belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY ! I'm reading this on Sunday morning. Had a busy time of it here as one of my son's came in for a surprise visit. So little computer time here at my house. I hope you have a wonderful year ahead. Birthdays are reason to celebrate for sure !
