Breakfast at Home

From early childhood I have heard that Breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I have no idea if it is true or not, but my mama was always right (if that explains my position ;-)  )

So, growing up I did like toast every once in awhile. There was NEVER a toaster in our house, but my mama would take white loaf bread, lay in in her biscuit pan and but a dollop of churned butter on the bread, every once in awhile there would be two smaller hunks on a piece. There was nothing prettier than that golden toast with that delicious yellow spot.  I always took my time and enjoyed that when I got to it, mmmm delicious.

Most of the time we had mama’s  delicious biscuits, even after there only us four at home, two pans of biscuits went in the oven.

Our Breakfast was (with few exceptions), gravy some meat, ham, country ham, bacon, fat back, sausage or liver mush. Eggs (several ways) I liked mine ‘runny’. Grits, there was always grits. I figured grits must be in the Bible.  I thought the world sorta revolved around grits. I loved to mix my grits and runny eggs together.

Breakfast was the only meal that always had a  ‘dessert’.

That was butter and ho-made Jelly or Butter and molasses.  My daddy mixed his jelly or molasses and butter together for a sort of pretty yellowish mixture, so that is how I ate it. I ALWAYS loved breakfast.

Funny story about mixing the jelly and butter. When we  moved into our own little love nest, renting a 8x26’ trailer, the first morning she fixed a good breakfast. By then folks were using that new ‘innovation,’ canned biscuits. Where you hit them on the edge of the counter top and they ‘POPPED’ open. The breakfast was super, the lady across the little table beautiful and beaming. Suddenly at the end, I heard, “What are you doing?”

I was doing what I always do, mixing my butter and jelly. She had never seen that, they had always buttered the biscuit and ate the biscuit and jelly at different bites or put jelly on or in the biscuit.

She soon saw the beauty and taste of doing it my way. Now she does it.

PS: I went thru a spell of skipping breakfast, then a spell of oatmeal, Now we split the chore. Sherry one day me the next. She does eggs or oatmeal I do the fruit smoothies with a little oatmeal.

(It still isn’t as good as the ham, eggs and grits Breakfast!)

The best breakfast we had while hiking the AT. This was in a hardware store in Monson, Maine. Homefries, eggs and a plate of country ham for $5 total including good coffee.(That was ho-made jelly above my coffee cup)

I never heard of anybody doing that with their butter and jelly either. you are one of a kind, Jack. I sop up my runny eggs with the toast.

What your mother told about breakfast is true.Since we have a long gap from night till morning it is necessary to have a good breakfast.

I'm not a big breakfast person. I like to eat about eleven and make it breakfast and lunch together. Don't care for breakfast food too much and I know that's bad.

I eat egg beaters and toast with
jelly. I remember our breakfast
when we were home. The Dr.'s
would tell that eggs were high
in cholesterol and ruined everything
I think that has been changed lately. I do love breakfast.

Jack we must be kin...I mix my jelly and butter or Alaga syrup and butter when eating with biscuits. I also mix my grits and runny yolk fried eggs. Nice day here today, take care, Sheila

I'm a breakfast eater; I have to have my breakfast. I have a toaster but I use my toaster oven with the butter bread so much better. I put my jelly and butter together and eat it with a butter biscuit. You will have to ask Sheila how often she makes biscuits. Open-mouthed smile

Oh behalf of my dear daddy ... my toes are curling in delight! He, too, believed breakfast was the most important meal and delighted in all the food groups. Except grips. How he loved them; but alas in the 50's and 60's they were no-where to be found in N.M.
I don't much care for jelly/jam, but can appreciate mixing 'em all together. Isn't that half the fun? :)

I mean 'grits', not grips! That must be a whole 'nother food group! LOL!

I do agree with breakfast being the most important meal of the day; hard though when you have people in your family that don't like to eat until a certain time of the day (like closer to lunch) but have to be out of the house by eight. Can be challenging to get something in their tummy :)

Your breakfast growing up, Jack, sounded delicious!

Yep, I've mixed ham and butter. I've also mixed butter with
sorghum syrup as well as sorghum and peanut butter.
I LOVE breakfast and I would have to agree that ham, eggs, grits and biscuits are the best in my book.

I love a good breakfast but most of the time only fix a big one when company is coming. I so remember my first taste of grits and that was traveling south in the 60's. Every place we stopped at to eat served them and not just for breakfast either. Turned out that I really liked them and looked forward to having them again. I have one of my little grandsons here this morning and he loves bacon and or sausage so I'll probably fix him some along with some toast and an egg. He hasn't liked jelly yet, but I may just try out some mixed with the butter the way you do. We'll see...
