Sherry
and I had dabbled in heading west. San Antonio, Arkansas and Missouri. But on
our first complete trip across country I was pleasantly surprised at many
of the high profile sites. I was
surprised at the Petrified Forest.
(My buddy Sonny, in a broken tree!)
I
honestly never expected to see huge petrified trees lying on the ground. We even stayed in an RV park that had a huge
log lying in the middle of it.
I guess I
was most amazed with the Grand Canyon. My mind just could not wrap around the
idea of anything other than a big ditch! But if there is something like
‘awestruck’, I had it. I could not picture the immensity of this place.
I mean we
have a mountain in NC (Mt. Mitchel) that is a mile high (altitude) and here we
are on the rim of the Canyon looking DOWN on a mountain in the middle of the
canyon which is that high from the base! I mean the Grand Canyon is HUGE.
(Below is the path down the wall. Only two trails go down into the canyon. We didnot go all the way down, that is an over nite walk. You can take mules and do it in a day.)
I love
the East coast and the Gulf coast. Growing up I saw the ocean at the coast of
NC at 7 yrs old. Since then we have covered the entire East Coast, I love it. I
think 85% of the east coast is sandy beautiful beaches.
I saw
the Mediterranean coast lines before I saw the USA West coast. Much of the Med
has beautiful rugged rock walls. The French Riviera is more like NC/SC
coast lines beautiful surf and sand.
The
west coast was impressive to me. Much like the Mediterranean, rugged walls and narrow
sandy beaches. That drive in places is breath taking and much more beautiful
than I expected.

Those are some incredibly lovely pics, I enjoyed the descriptions as well. Y'all have been everywhere man!!!
This makes me think of Woody Guthrie's "This land is my land, this land is your land...." Smiling at your thoughts about the Grand Canyon. Back in 2010 when my grands visited, Chloe seemed UN-enthused. Then, wait a minute. She confided in her momma, "I thought we were just going to go look at a big hole."
I've been to the Grand Canyon probably about 5-6 times and each time it is just as breathtaking as the first time I saw it. We drove a lot of the coast on the West Coast, again so stunning. God really did make a beautiful country in America!

Thanks for sharing - I have been to the Grand Canyon once and it was so awesome and gorgeous!
Here in northern Ohio, we have the coast line of Lake Erie, which cannot compare to the coastlines you've seen. And we have no mountains, but have a lot of flat ground until you get south or east of here, then we have the foothills of the Appalachian mountains. So thank you for sharing all the pictures. How beautiful!
There is so much I would love to see but know I never will. I cant get Nick out of the Carolinas for anything. I would love to visit all the beaches but I would also love to see the mid west and some dessert.
Happy Saturday
Lisa
i love the oceans on the west coast. the water is bluer than the greenish color on the east coast.
