Solitude #2

That Car:
   The 1985 American Eagle

Now,
I was told if I chose Cochlear implants It was irreversale and I would never again hear without the required devices, I would be totally deaf. I had grown so tired of ‘not understanding,’ I was VERY willing to sacrifice my total of 7-10% hearing on the altar of implants.
My devices must go into a dehumidifier each night, so I am totally deaf while I am in the bed. We try to say goodnight before I pull the batteries and put ‘em to sleep.
So without the devices I hear nothing, the world is quiet. At times I actually enjoy that solitude but realize it would hold some dangers if I were alone. I thank God I am not alone, my girl has been my ears for a long time. She has two cell phones, one 'was' mine. We tried to return one but found we would lose our OLD PLAN and under the new, we would gain nothing. LOL I can text. I have tried to answer phones, but the results are very iffy. (just ask Evelyn!) LOL
The only ‘Group Events’ I attend is church. I am not sure I would do that, if I did not have my girl. I feel bad for her at times because I am sure she would go to some of the events at RV parks, were it not for my hearing.
At times (if I could) I would go into the desert or an isolated mountain, pull my devices and live there in solitude. BUT my sweetheart draws the line. She needs to be within a few miles of Walmart, Target, Kmart or Mall and a town (I do not want that girl to be miserable).
She and her sisters ‘shopped’ at least one day a week (Before their deaths). NOT always buying, but shopping. She still has that mindset and misses ‘em with no one to shop with. LOL

Ps: Anyone with hearing aids knows about the SQUEAL or feedback when someone or an object get close. Implants do not do that. Also with the implants the Tinnitus is gone 99% of the time.

your implants while not perfect provide you with a gift that otherwise wouldn't have been possible. you are lucky to have sherry be your buffer. the two of you make friends easy enough. and you have lifelong friends as well. so you are never alone in your travels. and there is something to be said for that as you age. take care.

Keep them in for her - my hubs is getting deft too and it is hard. Can she go to one of these groups without you? Just wondering...

I agree with Sherry; I'm not much of a shopper but I do like to be close to "civilization" which includes being a few miles from stores like she likes to shop in. Not to be nosy, but do you have a back up plan in case Sherry passes before you? Maybe you can blog who will be your ears then :) (only if you want to)

I'm glad you have that wonderful girl to be your ears. I wish my sister lived closer and I know we would do more things together. I'm not a big shopper but I know we would go to places just to hang out together! Our ENT doc wears hearing aides and we had to oil the hinges on the OR door in his operating room because the squeaking bothered his hearing aides!

I have noticed my Teddy has the volume turned up higher on the TV than before. I think the chemo may have damaged his hearing. Bless your dear wife for having good hearing. But if she could not be with you 24/7, you might consider a doggie companion. Dogs are good to have around if your hearing is weak. When you mentioned your wife shopping with her sisters, took me back to when I first retired. My old friend from school retired the same time I did, she and I would shop once a month....like you said, mostly to have lunch together and girl talk...we sure did not need anything from the stores. LOL. Go shopping with your wife...just for the closeness of it. Blessings to you both, xoxo, Susie

I am thrilled those implants work for you, Jack. That is fantastic. My husband is totally deaf in one year due to removing a brain tumor many years ago-inner ear was destroyed. He has fair hearing in the other but the ringing is bad sometimes. He does not do well where there is a crowd or large amount of noise.
Have a great night-Hugs - Diana

I'm not much of a shopper, but feel a need to be near retail … just in case. Like Tom just asked me, "How long does it take to get to Hooters?
… he'd a hankering for wings. :)
We've no dehumidifier, but it seems Tom has to replace his aids' batteries ALL the time. Is that normal?

pS) tell sherry i love to shop. i'm always on the outlook for a bargain. but my best friend lives too far away to join me. so my husband sits in the car and waits. it does not make him a happy camper. me on the other hand is blissfully unaware of his frustration as i scope out my next purchase.

I'm so glad that you've got your girl to keep you from becoming a hermit. Thankfully you don't need to hear iin order to blog so we know you'll be around for awhile yet to come. We all need each other and no man is an island.
